So... just got a PM from Venom about Half Life 2, he got it at the weekend and was mentioning some stuff. I was like "huh?"

Turns out he's got (much) further in a weekend than I have in 3 months. :o

It's currently my #1 game but my last save is late April.

I was looking to share some stories and you've basically just started the game.

Although maybe I should be ashamed of myself for not having a life.

I know. It's shit 'cause I'm really enjoying it.

I should try and play after work but I'm always too tired.

I got up to the bit with the antlions and the prison recently

the bit where you drive along the coast was fun - the bridge section and the bit with the magnetic crane were both cool

Ok, I should stop reading this thread now for spoilers. I just got the submachine gun.

:nervous:

I know, that's fair enough. :D

I have just checked, I think there are 16 episodes and I've started 5 so I'm more than 1/4 of the way through already.

I want to play some of this tonight now.

Just got my digital TV box to play with tonight as well but there's probably still nothing on. :)

The crane bit is great, theres sooo many ways to squish those little soldiers. I managed to whack a few out into the sea, that was amusing.

So, did you guys buy this game in a shop or download it? I downloaded the demo but it was massive and kept trying to access the internet.

I bought it at game then activated online. Didnt have too many problems with steam...

Didn't have any problems with Steam. Had serious trouble with the install when I tried to skip installing the Counter Strike Source. Install crashed everytime.

yeah me too. Solution is to install both then lose CS if you dont want it.

I've never played CS and dont intend getting in to it. It sounds so easily hacked I dont see the point (client side hit detection, DOH!)

i play a fair amount of cs:s

on the servers i've played on, usually clan-run servers with admins online, the occasional hacker is very easy to spot and ban. I've seen very few though tbh. There are far too many people in the community who cry cheat when they've just been beaten fair and square.

I bought it.

The Steam thing is annoying, it does try to access the internet to activate the first time you play but after that you can play offline.

I've played CS on a friends computer who had an all-in-one cheat; including wallhack, headshot script, flashbang remover, auto aim.

It completely takes the fun out of the game but it's very easy to get away with. As long as you bind the auto aim to a mouse button and don't actually point at people when you can see them through a wall no-one will ever know.

It's why I gave up CS as it just isn't fun when you're up against people that have a huge advantage.

Steam. I got it several months ago, but only played it fairly recently - looks fairly good. Could have been better if the weapons didn't suck ass, along with a few boring levels. The ending was stupid easy though.

I miss having lots and lots of ammo for the guns. I like to unload on things.

Venom

Not enough of anything. 18 rounds of .357 ammo? Fuck that.

Yeah, but one shot from a .3576 takes out everything but a few rare things, and it's accurate as far as you've knocked your LOS up to. The crossbow as that crappy delay, having to aim, and then the actual stupidily slow travel time.

The grabity gun was the worst thing about the game once you get towards the end... your a damned tank with it - and you HAVE to use it. Talk about anti-climatic.

Venom
16-06-2005, 13:15:09
I don't really like the gravity gun. Mostly beacuse you can't see shit in front of you.

Played my way through some of sand traps last night. God damn Antlions.

Beta1
16-06-2005, 14:09:08
I liked the ending - the whole thing about starting with nowt but a crowbar and ending like a walking tank was cool. Theres something highly amusing about grabing a combine soldier with the gun and using him like a bowling ball to flatten the rest of his platoon

No longer Trippin
16-06-2005, 16:57:29
The antlions are the most annoying and easy level when outdoors. It is either just damned time consuming moving stuff to walk with the grav gun or bloody eaesy once you get the bait and can use them as suicide squads (that replinish).

The super grav gun at the end was just stupid IMO. Kills everything on the screen with no effort. Kinda like the CoR ending if you choose the easy way instead of the hard one (at least you have a choice though).

I pretty much hated all the weapons in the game, they just felt wrong.

Beta1
16-06-2005, 18:05:05
I think its fine for the last level - its a bit like the jedi knight games where you start off struggling to deal with some bloke with a blaster but by the end you go through stormtroopers like their not there, its the increasing feeling of omnipotence thing. By the last level I was pretty pissed off with the bad guy and smashing my way through his troops like they were made of paper just felt right.

I liked the antlions in the driving bit but the making steppingstones bit was a bit boring. I liked the antlion bait thing though, always amusing to see the combine minced by big spikey things.

The driving physics were horrible - not to mention the buggy itself and how it reacted. The airboat was fine. Just the buggy, no. Ugly outdoor scenes and crappy physics and handling for the buggy made it awful. FarCry was much better in that regard.

Ravenhom was fun though with the grav gun and saw blades.

I finished it last night.

I love the ride in the pod through the main HQ thingy at the end. It's almost like they built that bit first as a graphics test and then worked backwards through the game.

I don't have any complaints about that game. It's definately the best 1st person shooter I've played.

Provost Harrison
24-07-2005, 12:49:59
Yes, I found it very enjoyable. And as for plugging people near the end with a souped up grav gun - I thought it was cool - not overdone as it was only for a short part of the game.

All in all - :b:
