cool, I havn't played it for a while but I'll find the disks and be looking out for you!

Lets hope they figured out how to make BF2 more fun than 'nam. The air craft (especially helis) were waaay too powerfull on that. Then again it took 4 patches to get the balance right in 42!

somethings not right there, have you tried playing around with the settings?

I'll download it tonight and see what it looksl ike on mine

King_Ghidra
13-06-2005, 09:51:36
i played a couple of hours worth on the weekend

looks like you have it running on the default video settings protein

on mine i bumped up the res to 1024x768 and the general graphical settings to high and it looks great. It can only go up to 1152xwhatever but i haven't tried that yet

gameplay wise it was very much like the desert combat mod, but some of the new touches were cool, for instance explosions now have the same kind of deafening and disorienting effects as CS:Source

the big new change is the commander feature and the ability to form up into squads. still not sure i realy understand how htis works, but the suspicion my cowies had before i played it was confirmed, on a public server no-one gives a fuck about some random stranger who is trying to 'command' them

medics are much cooler now, they can res you where you died before you respawn and also they can throw med packs around so you can run over them to get instant health

can't remember anything else of interest right now

protein's graphics card can't handle it that's why he has to take the lowest graphic settings?

trying to capture a bit of the planetside thing I guess. Its a good idea though - even a moderately organised platoon (IE one that manages to stay grouped) is much more effective and much more fun.

King_Ghidra
13-06-2005, 10:33:57
yeah basically you can voluntarily form into squads, which means your squad members are highlighted on the minimap. I don't know if there's any other benefit, but it was quite cool advancing across cover in stages with my squad.

oh i forgot there's a sprint thing now, so you can run really fast in a kind of straight line until some stamina gauge runs out. very Useful.

Sounds great for lunatic engineers. I used to do that quite a lot in 1942. The old mad dash at a tank carrying a landmine thing. Thats when I wasnt whizzing around in a jeep with a back seat full of explosives.

yeah but i think the commander can do more than just co-ordinate people, i'm juts not exactly sure what yet...

i'm pretty sure they can call down artillery strikes and so forth, bugger to find info on for some reason, and obviosuly can't try it in game unless you're lucky eough to be commander...

www.3dgamers.com - still quite good (took me only 2.5 hours to download the demo), despite being taken over by IGN lately.

Just tried out the multiplayer on local (ie. I was alone on the map) - it has the larger version of the SP scenario, with more units etc. - such as VTOL planes, wheee!

Adding to the list:
+aircraft displays FINALLY have such unimportant information as speed and altitude.
+destroyable bridges.
+optically and laser guided missiles on aircraft.
+Dune buggies!
+climbing up the crane, sniping, and then running through the arm and chuting!
-bridges can't be destroyed seemingly by anything else than C4. I mean, even Abrams Tanks get damaged by light cannon fire, why don't wooden bridges show any sign of wear after being directly hit with a full barage of unguided missiles?
-the overall ease with which you can kill someone through bumping into him via vehicle. On several occasions I've managed to "run myself over" with the boat, just by basically being touched by it, as it slid down the shore.
-speaking of being ran over, the bots have an ugly tendency to do that, so if you hear honking, for Heaven's sake GET YOUR ASS OFF THE ROAD :D!
-first bug - I tried landing a heli on the crane. If stabilized it, and then exited the heli but... it was gone! Not fell down and exploded, simply gone!
-second bug - if you have poor hardware specs, don't think of becoming a pilot. Why? Because on low graphic settings you can't see some objects (like, say, buggys) until you are considerably close, probably too close to engage the target without doing a fly by.
+-if you eject from the heli, it remains in the air via autoration, so if you get out high enough, it is more probable that it will get out of the map bounds than that it will crash.

Hint on VTOL planes:
-hover mode - pressing and holding 'S' will activate it. You need to hold 'S' to retain altitude.
-normal mode - you don't need to hold any button to preserve speed.

I really need to get back to work ...

There's a sort of an easter egg on the large demo map: get on top of the large hotel-like building (by the eastermost MEC base), either via aircraft or via climbing the ladder. Now, thanks to a plank there, you can jump into the pool below, and without killing yourself. Wheee!

commander mode is cool - havn't got voip working but even so had some team work on a EA server. Once people see the commander is doing something they put in more requests.

Had a sniper up on the oil tanks for most of the game - kept him resupplied, had a squad leader with 6 guys who would follow instructions on which flag to attack and pissed off one sniper by repeatedly smacking him with arty strikes.

All while sitting safe in the AA turret of the carrier. Its quite hard to sneak up on the carrier when the AA gunner has access to the sat map. Got jumped by a havoc pilot who found the turret blind spot though.

you dont get many points (esp when you TK some annoying twat blowing up out planes) but very fun.

Also smacking down guys who try to parachute onto the deck and steal the planes is very funny. Guy on parachute v turret mounted gatling gun.... hmmmmm.....

LoD
16-06-2005, 19:07:38
OK, played some multiplayer finally today. It's quite alright, apart from the team coordination, which ranges from OK to awful.

Highlights the day:
-you know those action sequences in movies where the hero climbs onto a starting airplane from a moving car, which promptly gets crushed by the plane's wheels? Well, while I was in the MEC airbase, a dune buggy drove past by me and onto the airstrip, directly under the wheels of a taking of Su. What's interesting, is that the plane survived and took off without any problems. The dune buggy wasn't so lucky ...
-being chased down by a helicopter in a car, avoiding the missile barage - and surviving.
-managing to defend a CP singlehandedly against an Abrams, an APC, and an infantryman.
-seeing the commander say, after being TKd: "I AM THE COMMANDOR!". No shit ...

What about the rest of you guys?

Tried the commander today (as MEC). As Beta said, if you actually use the commander powers and give out your orders at least semi-sensibly, people will mostly listen to you. We won 75-0 despite there being only one squad (and I'm thinking there was only one person it , it was the best player 'though) and us being outnumbered by up to 33% :).

Does someone know whether the satellite scan shows up on the normal players' maps? I'm thinking it doesn't, but I'm not sure.

scan doesnt, UAV does. So keep sending the UAV out to where you want people to go. Doing a right click and choosing spotted also plots that on everyones maps. Good way of giving fliers the hint to bomb something

By the way, I've noticed today that, while being a commander and viewing the map/orders screen, if you zoom all the way, you can see the actual forces in that area - troops, armour, everything. Quite helpful if you want to know exactly whats going in a specific place.

I've been playing BF1942 on high at the highest reolution for months. This just looks so shit it's unplayable. I can't even see what's going on. Especially in the planes. There's no chance you could accurately bomb anything because by the time you see it you've crashed into it.

From the GameSpy review:

But the biggest complaint that we have with the game is the steep hardware requirements. You'll need a beefy video card: the minimum is a GeForce FX 5700 or a Radeon 8500. If you don't have the proper card, or the proper driver, the game dumps you unceremoniously to desktop without as much as an error message. We've got machines here at GameSpy with GeForce Ti 4600s that are capable of running Half-Life 2 or DOOM 3 with solid framerates, but Battlefield 2 won't even run on these systems.

:( poor protein.

As much as I would love to play all the awesome PC games that are out there (and boy would I love to!), it's things like this that stop me from shelling out for a kick-ass machine. It's a very expensive hobby to keep upgrading your system to match the advancing requirements of the games. As a console gamer I never have that nagging moment of doubt about whether or not the wicked new game I'm about to buy will run on my PS2 or not. The downside is that, from a graphical and online point of view at least, the latest PC games wipe the floor with anything available on the PS2 (or any console). *shrug*

That's a discussion for another thread, though. :D

Played this lastnight. Didnt actually manage to get online. Wireless network cant cope with Server listings.. and couldnt find the drivers for my ADSL modem... pah.

Anyway had a go with some of the other maps on single player. Very impressive, AI is waay better than BF 1942. Also had a chance to practice being Squad leader. Although once I'd captured all the control points the AI commander kept attempting to command me to attack a point outside the playable map, d'oh.

btw I think the commo rose is definately a cool innovation.. Waaay easier than the previous F keys access, especially for spotting.

So VoIP? I gather a few people here are using it. What headsets do people recommend etc?!

Beta1
24-06-2005, 10:43:20
I'm using a seperate mic but its not so good. Worked well enough in plantside though.

The comms rose thing is OK I just wish the ones other than spotted would select a little more easily - it often jumps over the one you want.

Whats the manual like - theres a few things I just cant figure out in the demo - like how to pick up another guys kit.

I was briefly SL last night, the previous SL got kicked I think I think it works quite well - simply being a mobile spawn opint makes things more cohesive as lont as you dont try and lead from the front. As I usually play AT or sniper hanging 100m back from the target and playing support suits me quite well.

Not very impressed with the auto kick in the demo - with the current red/blue bug its very easy to get yourself kicked. I got kicked a few nights back when I shot the wrong APC and got three TKs. I saw 2 APCs both MEC design fighting it out, both were tagged as enemies. One killed the other then pointed its tuuret at me so I fired and killed it. Turned out to be on my side....

There seems to be a lot less chopper raping though - they are still tough but now theres enough viable AA to stop them hovering. Even the HMG on the dune buggies will take one out very quickly

Nav
24-06-2005, 12:51:02
I think the commo rose will take a bit of getting used to, but I never got on with the F keys, before Id be dead before I managed to select 'Tank Spotted'. :)

Manual is a bit spare, but it covers all the keys, game and player types etc. I cant remember that key off hand but it should show up in the options.

Also playing as a medic or engineer actually makes sense now. However being revived in a middle of a pitched battle by the AI is not always good. 'Pzzt' Get up soldier! Bang! 'Pzzt' Get up soldier! Bang! 'Pzzt' etc etc. Maybe in v real people this will not happen as much.

Beta1
24-06-2005, 13:24:01

Anybody else playing this over the weekend? I didnt get to play as much as I wanted, but I managed to put a few hours in.

Playing as part of a squad is definately makes the whole game feel much more cohesive. I played lastnight on a server where people werent playing as a squads and it wasn't nearly as much fun.

My speciality at the moment (apart from getting killed.. a lot) is running up to tanks with deto packs and blowing them to hell. This is a major change, before tanks were nigh invincible, now they're highly susceptible to foot soldiers if unprotected.

Lots of fun, definately thinking of getting a headset for some VoIP squad action...

so your probably the twat I keep TKing with my rockets.

Its always the same you fire the rocket and just as its about to hit some prat charges the tank and gets in the way!

Am enjoying sniping even if the hit boxes appear screwed. The other day I got myself into a position a couple of hundred yards away from one of the beach flags but at 90 degrees to the angle of the main attack. Had a good ten minutes of picking off people who were looking for cover from the main attack before they figured out where I was.

ha ha. That actually has never happened. Other people have charged up to the tank just as I hit 'detonate' but that's their own fault for not paying attention!. Rocket launcher is a lot easier to use as well. Had a good hit against a fast reversing tank on Friday night.

Have you played on ranked server? I kept getting kicked by punkbuster. v annoying.

played a few hours on a german ranked server on the weekend (it was passworded, so not always full, unlike 99% of all other ranked servers)

frankly joining a game is the hardest and worst thing about bf2

for a start there are not enough ranked servers at all.
then there is the fact that the in-game server finder is a slow crock of shit ('find me servers that aren't full' filter was doing jack shit)
then there is the fact that it takes 1 thousand years (approx.) to connect to any server and load the map
then it fucks around checking your client info for half an hour

very very frustrating piece of crap

but then you can play and it's bloody brilliant

i managed to finish 2nd best player on a 64 player server on one of the maps, that was great fun

I got round the ingame server listing by using all seeing eye on a second monitor then manually connecting to an ip (shame eye cant actually launch the game though).

Also can anyone else see an option for 1280x1024 resolution? I don't understand why its not there?! v. annoying (especially as I want to dump my crt in favour of a 19in TFT and thats the native res,)

theres no built in 1280x1024 option but theres apparently a way of doing from the command line when starting the game. Cant be arsed to hunt around to find it for you though!

I should get the full game tonigh if I can get out of work in time

whoah been playing on that map with dam construction site. Very cool. Got myself defending the flag on the middle of the dam with a sniper rifle on one of hte towers and didnt realise I couldnt't cover the lower approaches - hence the flag got turned BUT then my side got their other spawns within a minute or so. As a result I was stuck up the tower and couldnt come down BUT had almost perfect LOS into the spawn looking almost straight down over the edge. As soon as my side started attacking the respawning enemy would always head into cover and duck leaving me with perfect shots directly down into them. The semi auto mode on the dragonuv is great - even though it usually takes two hits to kill you can have the second one on the way so fast it makes no difference.

Havn't got onto a ranked server yet - all the low ping ones are full all the time :(

Installed this late last night, but the app won't start. It keeps telling me to be sure to insert disc 2, but disc 2 is already in the cd tray. It was late, so I gave up.

Both here. I don't have a DVD drive.

I think Civ 2 was the last game I ever installed that worked without a hitch after installation (exclusing patch issues).

I hope I don't have to uninstall/reinstall, but I don't know what else to do.

Search the web for the issue and see what other people say. Helped me solve my HL2 and Pacific Fighters install problem.

I searched for 20 minutes or so and found nothing. I need to fool with it some more when I get home. Like I said, it was late, I was tired and I didn't give it much of an effort.

Are you gonna get this game, Venom? I'd like a bit of revenge. ;)

I did destroy you in BF1942.

I'll get it eventually but I've got a back log of games to play right now.

lol, "Insert Disc 2" really means "Insert Disc 1".

It's gonna take a while to relearn all the controls and hotkeys.

played on two this morning. Even less cooperation than usual- most of the squad leaders were flying around in single seater aircraft.

Formed my own and had a laugh for a bit but its majorly laggy. Much worse than non ranked. Must be something to do with the ranking info. Think I'll stick to the nonranked. Theres a good server at mox.eu.com - they are a TPF affiliate and most squads there are much more organised.
