Well, I have visited it, and didn't think it was that bad - particularly some of the new northern housing developments. It has a Tory council too; so it can't be that chavvy surely (well aware of how a council's position isn't always a true indicator of a place's wealth etc...)

Where would be nearest for gigs? Birmingham/London etc...?

I used to hand out flyers outside a club there. There were alot of really dodgy violent people there. I saw someone get his skull fractured with one punch in Swindon.

Here's what I found by putting "swindon" into google...

The most chav places in the south east have tory councils. Chavs prefer the tories and the bnp.

Swindon - literally "Swine Down", that is, Pig Hill.

It's boring as any other small town. It does at least have a train station for rapid escape, and jobs wise it's very good - lotsa scope for chopping and changing careers.

The bus service is crap, so unless you are a car owner, stay away.

There certainly are worse places.

I've not spent much time there, but it seems a typical semi-boring town to me.

Like their city centre shopping as so much of it is undercover, despite being on the street. Much nicer than Oxford.

The Magic Roundabout is fun. Makes spotting 'outsiders' easy as they're the only one's who actually bother to indicate on it.

I think the bit I'm living is pretty nice, north of Swindon, all new build; cheap house prices so think I will be able to buy my own pad fairly rapidly.

Gibsie - working as an Account Manager for a marketing company.

Alsieboo - Why, whereabouts do you live...? And do you know where I will need to go for gigs (emo/indie/punk/pop-punk/amusing cheese...?)

MOBIUS - you are right, it's called Steam (mate is getting *married* in there - fool) but as I'm in York at the moment a town wouldn't be a town without a railway museum...

Funko
31-05-2005, 17:09:44
Not many gigs in Swindon but loads in Reading and Oxford and you are reasonably close to both. (30 mins on train to Reading, 45 mins to Oxford, both have trains coming back after closing time)

This is the only link to a Swindon venue I found on our Berkshire (and surrounding area) music site:
