What the hell does it mean when you hit a site and firefox ask you what it should do with this file?

Your lame question is too vague. De-lame it by giving more details.

Though from what you've written, it may be that you've hit a site with a drive-by download and install, but Firefox is intercepting it (hurrah!) OR your link is being redirected to a file deliberately.

Well, it's a webmail site. And when you visit the site it ask you what you want to do with the file. If you select open, it brings up nothing.

A site with broken mimetypes could cause something that should display to be treated like a file. If something really is a file, then opening it in a tab will launch the file dialog, while the new tab will show a blank page. If you're asked whether you want to launch a file or save it, it's usually best to save it.

Analysis of the file indicates it's supposed to be a PHP redirect. I'm guessing Deacon's probably got it right. It's a problem at their end, and they'll need to fix it first.
