Did anyone see the first episode of "The thick of it" on BBC4 last night? It's the best new comedy I've seen in years.

It's a political satire shot as a "fly-on-the-wall" just as "The Office" was. It'll get compared to "The Office" for sure, and I think it's even better. The major difference is that it's darker and more vicious, and has a stronger cast too. With Chris Langham starring it was always going to be good (the man is the best deadpan comic on earth) but Peter Capaldi totally steals the show as an absolutely monstrous minister. That's a major difference- "The Office" had buffoonish, petty weasels, but Capaldi's character is genuinely evil.

Other plus points- it has more swearing than any other comedy I can recall, including possibly the first BBC use of that grand old expression "soapy tit wank". It's going to be huge, so catch it early and be one of the cool kids.

Will no doubt be on BBC soon (like all decent BBC3 & 4 stuff) and then I can't wait to watch it as I am an uber-political hack...

Was watching The New Statesman DVDs the other day; they are simply wonderful. Political comedy is an underappreciated genre...

I've seen some of the old Yes Minister episodes recently and laughed my ass off. They've held up really well.

I enjoyed the one where one bloke asks another "Who's the only gay in the village?" and he replies (clearly puzzled) "er, Eddie Grundy?"

Sadly I have no idea who the characters are or what's going on as I havent seen an episode yet.

Oh dear.

Don't hold your breath waiting for the next series. Chris Langham has been arrested in an "illegal internet use" investigation.

Hope it proves unfounded....

I thought his only vices were heroin, coke, booze etc - heard an interview with him a while ago and it seems he was on anything he could get his hands on.

That's why he was only in the first series of "Not the Nine O'Clock News". He was minged out of his mong on coke and smack.

And then he moved onto either -

1. Computer hacking

2. Kid porn

Damn, I hope to god he was a War Games fan rather than a Glitter Band groupy :(
