Actually, I think it's illegal here unless you have good reason.

At the very least, it's cause for suspicion.

Wearing body armour is not illegal or probable cause for a search under normal circumstances in either the US or Canada, AFAIK.

It's a purely passive defensive item.

There are, however, increased penalties for crimes if committed while wearing body armour in some jurisdictions.
