Provost Harrison

Any idea what kind of stuff he is going to be doing?

Dyl, Google it, after all, there can't be many people with such a silly name ;)

I'd love to see Derren Brown. I'd love to be buggered by him, too. Only mentally, mind.

Tell me please! I'd love to know. When he explained how he made Simon Pegg want a BMS I was most impressed but could've worked it out myself, but how he does stuff like guessing how much money people have in their wallets, I'd love to know how that's done!

I think.

BMX I meant. Derren has supplanted various messages in my brain. for example, I was talking about brains the other day and called them "browns". true story!

Well,

I got very interested in what he does after his messiah prog, which i thought was appallingly misleading. I hunted about the internet and if you talk to the right people you find out quite a lot. He uses a mixture of methods, but at its heart what he does is sleight of hand. While he claims he uses NLP and other psychological methods, he has never studied psychology. In fact his claims about psychology are highly misleading. One journalist even challenged him to take his 'findings' to the nearest research lab, needless to say he didnt.

Now, he does elements of popular psychology, NLP etc in his act, so its difficult to discern exactly what he's doing unless you know about magic, but basically his 'sleight of hand' is to convince you he is doing one thing (using psychology) while actually he is using basic magic tricks. I've heard accounts from people saying he pre-hypnotised them as well, which explains a hell of a lot. I can't remember whether it was someone on here or another site i go to but this guy had gone up on stage during his act and been asked to describe Derren's friend by holding and concentrating on a tape that belonged to him. What the audience couldnt see was the pic of the friend taped to the inside.

I think he's a great performer, probably one of the best ever in fact, but he certainly can't read minds or any of that. I'll post some links later if i can be arsed

He was amazing, one truely sick and twisted individual! Seriously, it was fantastic, and the cheek of him! You should all see him on tour, worth it.

Thanks for the info! If you can dig out some links it'd be nice, but only if you've got time.

http://www.simonsingh.net/Derren_FAQ.html

this is the main item I was referring to above, and it has a link to the original article. I fyou want to talk to people about their own experiences there's usually some debate happening on magic forums (both the illusion and witch/pagan kinds)

It seems a bit party pooping at first, but the journo makes a good point about how the claims on pschology are probably quite detrimental to those who study it seriously. Plus I noticed from my investigations there is a veritable industry growing up around DB- there are tons of charlatans out there quite happy to charge a fortune for revealing his 'secrets'.

If you actually talk to a magic circle member, the only people likely to understand what he does, they won't reveal anything but they'll acknowledge that its not psychology.

Having said all this, I have a lot of appreciation for DB, he's brought a fresh angle to the art of magic, which is no mean feat, I just wish he wouldnt use it to distort fact.

Some of the TV show is legitimate psychology. We could argue about the definition and the fraction, but I suspect that it is about 25%. In other words 75% of the show is magic dressed up as psychology.
Given that at the start of his show, he gives five things which his tricks rely on (magic, suggestion, psychology, misdirection, showmanship), 25% isn't too little really.

The real psychology of course, is worked on the audience, making them believe that it isn't magic tricks.
