That explains the attitude.

Chav = Townie = Yuppy?

Asher

Chav is a derogatory slang term in popular usage throughout England. It refers to a supposed subculture stereotyped as uneducated, uncultured and prone to antisocial or immoral behavior.
The essential stereotype is of being loudly lower-class, with 'class' defined by taste rather than income.
Er, right.

That definition seems to define you jumping to that conclusion from the picture, more than anything else.

Anyone will tell you that I seem to value income over taste. ;)

Chav (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Chav&r=f)

2. chav
Derived from Chatham in Kent, this term can be applied loosely to every culture with a nasty, thieving element. There are many variants of this creature but all are subject to the following commonalities:

Chavs are completely Amoral, having never been subjected to right and wrong by their inattentive, uncaring and often absent parents.

Chavs are part Magpie, evidentially supported by their love of all things shiny, or as vaccuous, illiterate street-slang would say 'Bling'. They can be seen twokking from the Jewelry counter in Argos/Index.

Whatever their ethnic background, Chavs have a built-in affinity to hip-hop/R&B, even if they are inherently racist (see the Scottish). They see their life as glamorous and cool.

Chavs are for the most part, extremely stupid. However, some of them render a form of low cunning, which can be misinterpreted as intelligence. However this is false. A Chav has no desire to better themself through honest means nor learn anything outside of car modification.

All chavs think that they are nails. Again, this is false. Sitting in a beaten up nova smoking lamberts does not precipitate a healthy body. The irony being that a Chav owns mainly sportswear, yet will only break a sweat if running from the police.

Chavs are incredibly fertile beasts, and are highly successful breeders. Where they come unstuck is having to look after the offspring which their 13 yr old drunken fumble produces. More often that not the child will crow to be a Chav, having received no more guidance on life than the parent.

Chavs have a fond love for cars, as well as a Vin Diesel fixation. Rather than buy a nice car to start with, a chav will spend all their dole and tax-free labouring cash on upgrading a 10 year old car with 200,000 miles on the clock. The end product will invariably be a luminous monstrosity with at least one serious collision to it's name.
Come back with my bumper, you fucking Chav thief.

Imagine a chavved up vauxhall nova with blacked out windows and body modification.

All it needs is one of those ridiculously loud stereos, a neon light underneath and one of those things that makes the engine hiss when you change gear.

I seem to value income over taste.
Yup. That's chav alright. It's all about income and status. Do you wear massive amounts of gold jewellery and the latest, most expensive trainers and England football strip?

Yes. It's not a crappy old fiesta transformed to look like a bad imitation of a sporty looking hatchback.

Mind you I do have a problem with the combination "sporty looking" and "hatchback" it's not really possible is it? It normally just looks like a slightly tacky failed attempt to tart up a boring looking car...

So getting windows tinted to protect my Canadian Computer Geek skin from evil sunlight on a standard/stock car makes me a chav?

Its not a compact hatchback, its a "5-door".
Its a nice looking little car, though.

The tint helps with the snow glare? I'm not a fan of tinted windows, but I stubbornly refuse to wear sunglasses too.

Fuel efficiency is lower than I would have thought, but I guess that's the big engine.

I think Protein's forgetting that lots of expensive classy cars have tinted windows too... Yes, it's chavy to have those stick-on tints that you can buy from Halfords, but Ashers car basically looks vaguely like the car Alex (from Protein's band) drives, and that's really nice.

It's the same car class as a Civic or Corolla, it's technically a compact car (as opposed to the sub-compact Echo hatchback):
http://www.canadiandriver.com/news/03images/04echohatch-1.jpg

I get ~29mpg usually, which is great for me.

The 2.0L gets better mileage, but is less fun.

MDA

Our civic was getting 33 mpg when we first got it, so I guess 29 isn't too bad. Manual transmission? - better mileage AND more fun!

Asher mate, do you drive about looking out of the rear quarters and rear screen??? Just it looks like those are the only panes you have tinted, how's that going to save your skin????

Ahhhh sorry, i see, another case of style over substance.:bash:

That engine hiss is a dump valve protein, admittedly not required on a nova unless it has a turbo, but otherwise quite important and functional as well as a bit ricey.

In Canada we have such things as laws, and these laws regulate and restrict certain things. Like, say, window tinting levels.

In Alberta, you are not allowed any tint on the drivers or passengers window in the front. I have 50% tint on there with 99% UV blocking anyway, but you can barely tell (you obviously couldn't tell).

The back windows are 15% because there is no law restricting tint on those.

I'm sure that you are well aware that the important part is UV blocking, which does not necessarily need black windows.

The hatch is far more practical than the sedan, particularly for someone living away from home who has to move frequently.

is a hatchback what we just call a 5-door, or is there some nuance?

Hatchback

Saloon

You can have 3 or 5 door hatchbacks.... at least by UK definitions.

Dyl Ulenspiegel
29-04-2005, 16:30:16
Wagons are 5-doors, a hatchback is a 5- or 3-doors. We usually call this a 5-door, though: A trunk, but a full backdoor.

Wagon - like station wagon ie. what we call estate cars?

A hatchback doesn't have a proper trunk which is seporate from the passenger compartment while a sedan does.

So mine is a hatchback too, which would not be obvious by just calling it 5-doors...

not a fully shaped trunk, neither an openspaced wagon back, but a full backdoor down to the bumper.

About that UV blocking...

Plain glass tends to block all UV without any additions, because the refractive index at the air-glass interface is high enough to make UV light bounce right off.

That's why UV lights use quartz instead of glass.

The Mad Monk
29-04-2005, 17:44:15
Same goes for water -- you burn more easily at a beach or pool because the water is relfecting all the UV right back at you.
