they should have MSN'd me to tell me

Christoph

This is so much better than the beta, it's got mini avatars on the main bit, and a 'what i'm listening to' featurer which used to be only available with messenger plus. It's got the good ol' handwriting tool too.

Mini-avatars and 'what I'm listening to'? Wow! How hugely important for instant messaging

Over 16 if he's getting pierced.

Christoph

16.

About 3 months younger than Bells

16 isn't old enough here to get anything but your ears done, with parental/legal guardian consent. The risk of lawsuits has effectively shut down any other form of piercings on minors. And yes, 16 year olds are minors in the States, but it is the point that they start to gain control over choices for themselves.

Christoph

I take it you're in the states then.

Muggins are cool. Free too, if you know how.

Amazing, your screenshot looks just like the Poly login screen.

Counterglow is too stingy to post it here.

Grumpy old farts heck. I would consider it an improvement if it advanced instant messaging technology somehow. But having been reported by Christoph as a cosmetic change, it's less than impressive. Like most of the ICQ updates over the past 5 years which has ended up in client bloat for little good reason.

It's like a patch for an average game that doesn't address any show-stopper bugs or add gameplay, but lets you choose a cool name for your character.

Now, it may be that MSN 7 has scads of new and amazing IM features that let you do what no other IM client can that totally improves the experience you get from using it and makes it a bajillion times better, but if all that gets reported is mini-avatars and 'what I'm listening to', well, consider me underwhelmed.

And are you speaking on behalf of everyone again, Asher, or just the argumentative assholes?

I speak on behalf of everyone.

I hope you don't think for one minute you are speaking for me. I'm with Qaj and the rest of the grumpy old farts.

Asher

Of course I speak for you.

Asher

For whatever reason Europeans and Asians are a bit behind the curve. ICQ is soooo 1998. Everyone's ditched it and moved on.

Qaj the Fuzzy Love Worm
12-04-2005, 20:39:07
Probably. You did get that the post you seem to take offense as was a dig at Christoph and not MSN, didn't you?

Your thoughts on why MSN is better than ICQ would be enlightening however. I'm mostly sticking with ICQ due to not-being-bothered-changing. Any good reason why I should switch?

Asher
13-04-2005, 00:21:38
Who was taking offense? Can't a guy be an indescriminate asshole?

As for why MSN is better than ICQ:

1) SPIM protection
2) Encrypted logon process (ICQ sends your passwords plaintext over the net -- hooray!)
3) Far, far superior interface design and user experience
4) No annoying features like "Xtraz!!!" that ICQ has
5) No ICQ number bullshit -- send them your email and they've got your IM and your email. Get a confusing email from someone, you notice it says they're online in your email client, so you instant messange them for clarification. 6) Offline messages are unreliable (they used to get "lost" all the time when I used them) and pointless -- if they're not online that's what email is for
7) ICQ's video/audio conferencing is lame at best
8) ICQ takes up insane amounts of RAM for what it should
9) "Uh-oh!"
10) Even the "Lite" version of ICQ is hideously bloated
11) Insanely, insanely stupid fundamental protocol design that is insecure and makes it incredibly easy to spam (ICQ)
12) I could go on but have to go to dinner.

Qaj the Fuzzy Love Worm
13-04-2005, 00:53:07
I was debating whether to think of an synonym for offense but couldn't be buggered.

1) Good, but I don't get much
2) Good
3) Couldn't say without seeing it
4)
5) Any email, or a Microsoft sponsored one?
6) Something that integrates with email would be cool. MS could do this through Hotmail.
7) Don't use it
8) Agreed
9)
10) Agreed
11) Don't know the specific protocols of either
12) I disgree. Stay here and pander to my request damn it!

This is less underwhelming :)

Any email. You need to register it as your "passport" (www.passport.net), but you can use any email you want. I use gmail.com for mine.

6) Something that integrates with email would be cool. MS could do this through Hotmail.
It's integrated with Hotmail, Outlook Express, and Outlook. Lotus Sametime uses a similar protocol, and Sametime IM is integrated with Notes similarly, but much crappier.

Not fond of Passport, though if it's a "throwaway" account I could handle that.

MY GOD!!! They made a useful improvement.

Now if you close a window it saves a record of your chat history automatically!!!

Finally a really basic feature has been incorporated into Messenger.

King_Ghidra
19-04-2005, 14:32:34
that was in the previous version iirc

Debaser
19-04-2005, 14:38:45
It's always done that hasn't it? At least the Mac version has anyway...

Funko
19-04-2005, 14:43:46
I've never had it do that. :( It's one of the most annoying things ever. If you close a window (by accident or whatever) your conversation was gone.

It just asked me if I wanted to switch it on or not the first time I tried to close a window on the new version.

It's certainly not like that on my new PC with the default install of the previous version.

Funko
19-04-2005, 14:46:53
And yes. All the recent versions of ICQ have been shit.

When MSN gets a visible/invisible list it'll be a decentish instant message client.

Debaser
19-04-2005, 14:47:08
I'm sure there's an option for it in preferences. The version I have must be at least 2yrs old now...

Funko
19-04-2005, 14:54:11
Probably.

I've only started using MSN properly in the last few months 'cause I can use it at work.

I still don't like it much. Not sure how Asher can suggest it's not full of useless crap...

But now I can inflict 'what I'm listening to' on people. HA!! SUFFER!

Gary
19-04-2005, 15:15:34
Never used message s/w at work, but ironically just received an email saying they're blocking Messenger anyway.
