View Full Version : Can Deaf People "Hear" Their Breathing?

OK. So, I was on my way to work today.

When I got to work, I still had my headphones on. Now, these are very tight fitting canal type phones (Etymotics, if anyone cares) and give almost total sound exclusion.

When I arrived at the quiet calm of work (compared with the cacophony of Piccadilly Circus), I turned the music off but left the headphones in place. Complete and absolute silence.........except.........

I could sort of hear myself breathing. So, I wonder, is that the same for deaf people? Can you sort of implicitly hear yourself breathe internally even if you can't hear through your ears?

Where do you think you were hearing yourself breathing from if not your ears?

I was hearing it inside. I could hear it in my head but not in my ears.

Then again, I often hear voices in my head too..............

Do you actually hear stuff in your ears?

I hear stuff and my brain does something to help me think where it's coming from but I don't hear anything in my ears...

You sure your ears aren't hearing the mouth/head part of your breathing and your brain interpreting the direction (correctly) as inside your head. But you can hear it because the in ear earphones are blocking out the external noise that'd normally drown it out?

what did you say?

I am glad I was not the only one who did not understand that :)

Actually, Funko could be right but that still does not explain the voices in my head....

I tried putting tin foil all around the office but it does not seem to help too much

One day when you'd had too many Stellas I cut your skull open and put in a little heat powered short wave radio. Anyone with a normal walkie talkie can talk to your head.

You're still not deaf RC, so you can still hear things. Even internal things. I can hear my bowels right now, churning away.

And so can my co-workers.

They can "hear" breathing, loud music, Heavy vehicles, swallowing etc. just not the way we do.

I once had the pleasure of watching a blind man talk to a deaf woman.

At one station on the tube when you stop it says:

"alight here for the royal institute for the blind"

I laughed out loud and got funny looks.

I think Venom's right. You can hear your breathing because the sound is just getting transferred through your skull instead of through the air. A deaf person wouldn't be able to sense the vibrations through any medium.
