1.5 to 3.0 Mbps of blazing broadband speed. And the first thing I did was come here.

God, what a waste.

*points and laughs*

Mine says 100.0 Mbps. Yeah, right.

If you check the date/time of the above and now, I've been away because I've been rewiring the telephone system in my house. I chose to do this because I wanted to save myself $200. Let me just say, given the difficulties I faced, $200 would have been a fair price.

I managed to burn my hands numerous times with a soldering iron, stab myself in the finger - hard - with a screwdriver, and then it took almost 2 hours trying to make the damn modem work with the router.

Still, now it's up and running it's totally worth it. LoC is happy, since her business is run on the Net, and dialup is just insane.

Plus the kids ant to play World of Warcraft, so how could I not upgrade?

You could walk around sighing and saying things like "we have to tighten our belts" and "in my day we didn't have dsl" and "if it's that important they'll send you a telegram".

I have a cable modem and I hardly ever do anything on line other then surf forums. If I got back into file sharing then I might use my broadband to its full potential.

27-03-2005, 19:10:57
Yeah but its no fun surfing at DSL speeds.

DSL is so last century

27-03-2005, 21:37:09
:o I meant dial-up. I had a copycat thread on the brain. sorry.

Friend of mine says back home he'll be participating in a trial of ADSL+. 12Mbps for only an extortionate about of money. Pity it's got a 16Gig cap, then it reduces to (get this) dialup speeds.

What did you need to solder?

Nothing that lasted into the final implementation.

The DSL provider includes a handful of DSL filters for free, so I cracked one open and checked out the remarkably simple PCB.

As you can see from the included diagram, I needed to separate out the DSL wiring in the house from the phones, as there's a security system installed with an RJ31 connector, and none of the filters were for RJ31's, only for regular phone jacks (RJ11).

So I ran CAT5 cable from behind the wall by the PC to the NID on the side of the house. I disconnected the old twisted pair cable and wired up one pair of the CAT5. Inside the garage, I thought to solder the connections directly to the PCB for the filter, which worked at first, but the solder I had was old and crappy and wouldn't stick right (kept on coming apart from the PCB).

So I thought: bugger this for a game of soldiers, and went down to RadioShack, where I bought a Frankenstein's monster selection of different RJ11 parts and hooked an intact filter into the system the normal way. It ended up looking rather nice at the end, in it's own way, and works really well. Getting nice high speeds on the DSL, the phones are working flawlessly, and we don't have a 25' phone line strung across out living room anymore (which is how we solved our dial-up not having a close enough jack to the PC problem originally).

All in all, a very worthwhile project :)

Back when I did my last phone rewiring we only had one type of wire - a bundle of 4 copper wires that you could splice or split with little pinch connectors. All you needed was a 15-dollar multitool for phone work.

The lines were so old in that place they were brittle. Ugh.

I used to walk uphill both ways to school, too. :D

Various places recommend CAT5 for a DSL connection, and that old poorly installed twisted pair can degrade your speed/signal. To get the phone company guy out to (1) set up the DSL connection, and (2) install a jack would have cost US$320+. I cost me 6 hours, a stabbed hand, and $20. Plus I know if it's running poorly it's because I did a crap job. I can't be arsed to get them back in again (presumably for more money) if things don't work out right - I had enough trouble getting my floor put down right this month *grrr*

The money would be gone forever. Your hand should heal up good as new for free.
