Iraqi troops 'kill 80 insurgents' (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/4374533.stm)

Could it be that the Iraqi armed forces are finally learning to stand on their own two feet? Could this be a turning point?

Obviously early days yet, but encouraging signs nonetheless...

One can only hope Moby.

Can't stay there forever.

Starting to see more stories about the local citizenry fighting back, too.

The current insurgency is the smallest stumbling block.

- getting a stable government
- avoiding a civil war with the sunnis (or even between Kurds and shiites)
- establishing order and economic upswing
- the Bush regime accepting the authority of the elected government

But I'm optimistic, give it a 20 % chance by now...

I agree with that, but it's still a stumbling block that has to be dealt with succesfully.

Cool! With training from the U.S. military, they'll soon be just as good as the U.S. troops, and, with all the U.S. weapons no doubt supplied to them, will be invading smaller countries at the whim of their head of state in no time. Er, just like the last time. Um.

Explain how this is good again?

Possibly b/c it is a step towards bringing American troops home?

Explain how this is good again? Just admit you were wrong and drop it Qaj.

You could find a black cloud in winning the lottery. :gasmaske:

Admit I was wrong when? I don't believe I've commented here on whether or not the Iraqi's could train their own troops.

And lighten up, this isn't Poly, we're entitled to take the piss as we see fit :) Group hug?

Well, I suppose the presence of an effective home defence force could prevent a massive civil war and prevent millions of civilian deaths. Does that count as "good"?

Only if you accept the assumption that human life has some inherent value in and of itself, which is worth indiscriminatory preservation :gasmaske:

Ah yes. I see the flaw in my statement now.

Especially when effective means indiscriminate shooting, torture and massacres.

Ah. The traditional way governments keep their power. The old ways do work the best.

They wouldn't be the old ways if they didn't.
