View Full Version : Headcount Reduction

Not only a great title for copycat threads, but two of managements favorite words!

The pass year I have been working to increase plant efficiency and effectiveness. I was about to impliment a plan (today in fact) that would double the plants capacity. But, due to poor marketing, shoddy buisness practices, and a lackluster sales force for our product I will not be implimenting the plan in lieu of firing ppl.

I told them their FTE values didn't match their head count. Now, in order not to fire ppl who make a product that seems to be dying they would rather sacrifice plant efficiency. Morons.

I love my job... I hope they lay me off.

I feel your pain. I work in the highest net profit store in the state (probably in the top 200 of the country) and yet we get no bonus and have upper management up our asses with microscopes.
Do they smooth numbers based on profit contribution? Do they fuck.
Our brass isn't polished enough it seems...tough to do when you're doing twice as much volume as your footprint is designed to do. I've got stock pouring out of every nook and cranny...yet we "suck".
Fucking corporate job security BS. Typical.

I have lost all motivation to do any work.

I am suppose to run all these experiments today, but I'm thinking "I can do those tomorrow!"

Though I probably won't.

Not to mention there;s this one guy that I have to work "with", though it is more like pulling teeth than any actual work. I want to go all Venom on his ass...

Maybe I should just work on my letter of resignation instead.

This sucks.

You are frustrated because of... what exactly?

Japher

Because none what I do is actually done.

I design a process, a struggle to get buy in and for support, I get it, and then upper management goes "nope don't need it"

pretty much negating all the work I've done.

granted I still get paid, but if all I cared about was money I wouldn't of become an engineer.

Now, they are telling me that this time it looks like they are going to have to lay off people because the work I did get done has made the plant to efficient. Why would the tell me? Why would I care?

I have out lived my usefulness here, and that sucks.

What is worse, they know it.

Man, if only the knew how much I time I spent posting on the internet.

Ah, headcount reduction, those famous words. However refusing to increase efficiency because of this seems a little silly.

I'd fire everyone in a heart beat but I'm a cold hearted capitalist.

So if you design 100 people to be fired, you are frustrated when they keep their job?

It's really bad...

I am friends with the production planner, and we are only making 2 lots this year, and the second one is set to be made next week. After that, nothing...

We really got screwed.

Oh well, I want to get laid off. I just feel bad for the rest of the ppl here who are dedicated to this product.

Off with their heads!

Japher

O-kay, now it's 4 batches. Though 2 aren't until December.

Ppl are going to get canned.

I hope I'm one of them.

Though I kind of blew a phone interview this morning.

Wow...how big is the plant you work at?

Japher
23-03-2005, 22:51:26
It's a single fill line <50 operators. We generally do about 30-40 batches/year.

I use to support another plant that had 200+ ops, made the birth control patch. That product is getting shipped out to Puerto Rico, all tablets got shipped out to Vacaville or the east coast, leaving only us, and a contracted product which is mostly QA. All the development processes use to come here, and they are now being diverted to PA or NJ...

Pretty much, I am going to be without a job sooner or later, and seeing as wifey is due in less than 5 months...

Darkstar
23-03-2005, 22:55:29
You definately need to be interviewing now. Coverage for maternity and subsequent matters often have an starting time clause so that if your little missus is 3 months or less due, they don't cover a dime. No insurance makes for huge bills...

miester gandertak

never heard of that

Darkstar

It's now popular to classify pregnancy as a "pre-existing medical condition" and not cover it for new full time hires. Standard seems to be if baby is due within 3 months of hire date, but I hear it is expanding. I know of a few international corps that have local offices here that they won't cover any costs if the due date is 6 months (or less) from hire date.

So, you *definately* need to get shopping around for a full time with bennies *now*. And you need to check if they will cover your needs if you hire on with them.

Japher
23-03-2005, 23:05:52
I have a full time, it is just becoming less and less secure. Also, it will be near impossible for us to survive (financially) on one income here in the bay area, and I want wifey to raise the kid, not some stranger at a day care center.

I looked up the "pre-existing", I'll just take the COBRA if it won't work out.

COBRA is about 4-5x more than what you are accustomed to paying through company benefits, FYI.

I had that millstone around my neck for quite some time.

Japher
23-03-2005, 23:43:07
I currently 90/month for my wife and I. I have about 5k saved up for whatever. If I get hire to another company I could manage it seems, figuring it'll be about $500/mo for 5 months.

COBRA?

zmama
24-03-2005, 13:54:40
Dunno what it stands for, but after you lose your job you can pick up your health benefits for 18 months at your own cost.

It used to be 109% of the cost (an added admin fee) I don't know if it has changed recently
