More money for Scaled Composites. More fame for Burt Rutan. A world record entry for the pilot.

The company that built that plane is from California. I believe they are the same people who built the world's first civilian space ship to reach orbit.

So was it really a close call, or just some extra publicity stunt?

Good question :)

I don't think they'd deliberately underfuel the plane, but they might have screwed up.

This went much smoother than his round-the-world balloon trip. This guy has done lots of cool stuff, including completing the Iditarod.

Is he just very very rich,
or does he have a gift for getting sponsorship?

He's very rich.

They don't know about the fuel problem yet. Whether it was a leak or an instrumenation problem or whatever else. They do know that they got great tailwinds for the last few legs of the trip, and that's why he made it.

I said that it was Scaled Composites. They've done a lot of things, including SpaceShipOne, as well as the other recent around the world non-refueling airplane flying trip.
