In two weeks I am off to Japan where I will be spending the rest of the year ("working" on my Ph.D.). Has anyone been there and/or have any essential or non-essential advice? Things I need to bring? To get once I am there? To see once I am there? Should I make a Tau Ceti@Japan AE?

If you like Anime go to Studio Ghibli, and I'm sure someone will tell you to go to the Hello Kitty factory... :P

It's a land full of midgets with neon lights and vending machines full of everything on earth on every corner.

day 1: tau ceti has to ask an attendant to help him retrieve the 100 yen coin he got stuck in the panty-vending machine

Make sure you go to Ueno Park in Tokyo during the cherry blossom season. (April to May) it is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.

How do I grow tentacles quickly? There are no nuclear plants nearby. :(

Though I am going to visit Tokyo at some point, I am not sure when. I expect there are some beautiful parks in Kyoto as well - the old Imperial Palace gardens, perhaps, if they are open to the public. And I would like to see Himeji-jo during cherry blossoming.

Good luck! Have fun when you can!

From what I hear, you should go ahead and look up some gaijin support groups somewhere around where you are going to end up. They might be able to help out on basic matters that you'd never have thought of until after you are there.
