With battlefield 2 on the horizon I thought I might invest in a graphics card that could handle the job and maybe far cry, doom etc etc

I wouldn't even know where to buy one let alone what is good or how much they cost. Any help would be fantastic.

Something cheap would be nice.

Oh, and it would have to be able to support two monitors for studio use. I don't know if that's standard or not.

No, that isn't standard.

Wow.

I thought graphics cards were about 50.
There's no way I could afford one of them.

Ah peanuts. Sell a few music related items on ebay and you'll soon have the cash.

How about music CDs of your many bands :)

You can get that card for about 120 if you shop around I think but yes, new graphics cards are expensive.

Having recorded with Rob, he really really needs the 2 monitors!

Rob, i dunno what the requirements are for battlefield 2, but if anything i reckon you will have difficulty finding a modern video card that "WON'T" support 2 monitors, from the base ATi 9250 up to the X800 they all have a Dsub and DVI connector, the DVI connector will plug into most flat panels straight out of the box, and if your running Dsub monitors or panels then DVI to Dsub convertors cost pennies and are included in some Video Card packages.

This of course depends on your definition of 2 monitors, do you want 2 completely seperate video systems or would you be happy with ah desktop which spans 2 monitors allowing you to view 2 operating programmes in full screen one on each monitor???

My 9600 plays Half Life 2 just fine, but I don't know about the 2 monitors thing. I recently bought one for my parents so Mom could play Myst III and I think it was about 130 dollars US.

If you look on the rear of the card if it has the D-sub (blue) and DVI (white) connectors then it will support dual displays. but generally in that environment it creates an extended desktop space from 1024x768 to 2048x768 for example, although the placement of the second desktop is personal choice, i have mine over to the right.

That graphics card with the link is a stupid price, mine is the 9800SE 256mb version, and it cost me 110. If you really want to have a good card, go with the GF6800 Ultra. It's very expensive, but is the best one in the world at this time.

I recomend the one i'm using right now, it will play Doom 3 on full jobby, and HL2 looks amazing, and it has the 2 monitor option. Best place to get it from is ebay or ebuyer.

I recommend this card from ATI:

It's a little old (the article was written in 2003) so the price should have come way down by now.

What is BFII gonna need to run? Does anybody know? I've seen excited articles about the game but not that kind of detail

I'm assuming that it's going to be some sort of next generation game from the stills I've seen. My card couldn't handle Far Cry but it's perfectly happy with BF 1942.

What about this one? I could afford this.

You know, MDA, I'm thinking of making the first card I posted a link to mandatory for the next round of Angband challenges.

Rob, the minimum card you should get is a 9800pro 128/256 this supports 2 monitors and will be able to play all the current top-of-the-range games fine. I imagine it would be okay with Battlefield 2 as well (it better be), Ive got the 256 version and have been using it with two monitors for the last year.
