Firewire is mostly used for video cameras and external harddrives.

firewire is just like a quick usb, it's another way of getting things to talk to your computer, the three things already mentioned are good examples and various other things can use it too

The only thing is really useful for is video cameras.

Even Apple is migrating their peripherals to USB2, and they're the main backers (and trademark holders) of Firewire.

Pro Tools digi 002 is firewire. I can squeeze 40 odd channels of very high quality audio from my pre-amps to my hard drive down one of those little wires.
