Would you say Vienna is a pleasant city? Or does one gets killed by boredom? Is it very rich like say luxembourg style or is it more like half-half like brussels where it is ok but you better not go to some neighborhoods (knows as ghettos). are people in vienna pleasant and friendly (with central european standards) or are they finnish clamshells?
would you say one can have a pleasant time there?
(could be going and living there for a job)

anyway it's a very long shot, the job i mean. if vienna is bruxeluesque it can be good but i have the feeling it is more of a louxermbuesque environemnt. that's why i asked the professor for a insider's look, just in case

"Would you say Vienna is a pleasant city?"

No. But I have to say that, as I'm from the west of the country. :D

"Or does one gets killed by boredom?"

No, you'll find pretty much everything there, as in most cities of 2 million.

"Is it very rich like say luxembourg style or is it more like half-half like brussels where it is ok but you better not go to some neighborhoods"

More like brussels, although there are no real no-go areas, just some run-down areas. Luxembourg is way too tidy (and small) to compare.

"are people in vienna pleasant and friendly"

They are known to be particularly grumpy.

"(with central european standards)"

What are those standards?

"would you say one can have a pleasant time there?"

Sure. I wouldn't want to live there for the rest of my life, but for a couple years... of course, lod will deny that. :D

Maybe it was the original hobbittown. Hobbits and Austrians aren't so dissimilar.

Generally I don't know why do you differentiate both things - at first glance, Vienna is both ;). However, as Dyl said, it's a 2-million-size city, so there are lots of nice places to hang out at (pubs, clubs, etc). There a large choice of artistic festivals as well - the most notable one is, IMHO, the Donainselfest, which is a 3-day music festival, offering really all kinds of music - and entry is free!

Is it very rich like say luxembourg style or is it more like half-half like brussels where it is ok but you better not go to some neighborhoods (knows as ghettos).

Generally the former. Vienna is a really safe city, one of the safest in Euorope AFAIK - I go out at night all the time and never had any unpleasant incidents, neither did anyone of my friends. If you keep out of specific, small areas at night (which are by no means "gettos") you will be safe :).

are people in vienna pleasant and friendly (with central european standards) or are they finnish clamshells?

Depends whether you asking about the Viennese, or other people living in Vienna... The former - not really friendly , sometimes tend to be nice only when they want something from you. The latter, yeah, sure, mostly quite friendly - and this is group comprises the majority of the people I met so far (but keep in mind that I'm a uni student) :).

would you say one can have a pleasant time there?
(could be going and living there for a job)

Certainly! Although the cute-quotient for the fairer sex is severely sub-par I must say ;)...

Yes, I think Sobieski "exported" all the Polish ones here in 1683, that would explain everything.

Thanks :) It'll probably be at least 2 months before I know for sure. I haven't applied for the job yet but I think I'll do it unless another job for which I applied gives me a positive answer first.
