View Full Version : ANGBAND: Challenge #13

Okay folks, here it is. Angband Challenge #13, character supplied by our previous runner-up MDA.

Character #13 is Antara, a Klackon Nature Death Ranger, and will be delving the dungeons of ZAngband v2.4.0 (you'll need to download ZAngband 2.4.0 if you haven't already got a copy).

Here are the rules:

1. NO CHEATING. This game is basically being run on the honour system. No-one can stop you making save-reload backups, but it is not part of the rules. If you die at CLevel 49 one turn before killing Morgoth, you'll have to start from CLevel 1 again. (Not that you'd need to, since you're almost guaranteed to win)

2. You have two weeks to get as far as possible. It is possible to win the game during this time period. Due date will be 2002-APR-10 2200 GMT (that's 10PM, folks).

3. There are some options you are not allowed to change. Below I will list the ones that are forbidden for you to change during the challenge.

3 - Auto-scum for good levels
3 - Generate dungeons with aligned rooms
3 - Generate dungeons with connected stairs
3 - Monsters chase current location (v. slow)
3 - Monsters chase recent locations (v. slow)
3 - Monsters learn from their mistakes
3 - Monsters exploit players weaknesses
5 - Allow unusually small dungeon levels
5 - Always create unusually small dungeon levels
5 - Allow empty 'arena' levels
5 - Monsters behave stupidly
Any of the "Cheat Options"

The others you may change according to your preferences. Keep in mind that this is only the list for ZAngband 2.4.0. Other variants will have other options, and will have their own taboo list.

Remember, when changing options then saving the character to the disk and making a backup to start with should your character meet an untimely end, you cannot play any turns between changing options then saving the character.

If you dispute any of the rules or option changes, post your objection, and we can all debate whether or not the rule should stand. Any suggestions for further rules will be welcomed.

Last but not least, here's the link again.

Good luck, and happy adventuring!

Well, went and got the character. And Zang 2.4.

15 minutes later... level 7.

5 minutes more and ... dead. Oops! I guess danger level means the dungeon level! Anyways...

Wow, a vorpal bunny vs a CLevel7 ranger. Now there's an uneven match! I take it you were somewhere in the wilderness, DS?

Just on my way back to the dungeon... Whee!

DaShi

Was that from the forest clearing quest? It has a lot of vorpal bunnies in it. I've never encountered anything that tough in the wilderness between towns.

You might laugh at the silly MOO displaced Klackon, but they get that little speed bonus every 10 levels and confusion resist - so you need not fear the Pink Elephant, one of my most hated foes in Z.

You may find leveling goes a little slower - Rangers are slow to gain levels since they're virtually dual classed.

Darkstar
27-03-2002, 23:25:56
Actually Dash, it was. That was the first I've messed with ZAngband Quests. Very first quest given (other then the even leveled dungeons 'Kill X of Monster Type). Bleah.

Salright... I'm back up past where I died. No killing the bunnies for me...

Darkstar: take note of the quest difficulty rating. That corresponds roughly to DLevel. If you don't think your character can survive the DLevel rating, wait a while before doing the quest, sinec you don't have to go charing off as soon as you're given it.

But be careful - the ratings are not entirely accurate (I'm thinking the Vault - DLevel 30 my posterior).

That's what it's supposed to be? Well, it's total crap on all the quests I've seen so far.

At a small level 3, I walked over the 'Thieves Den' one, which was a Danger Level 5.

Then got assigned the 'Kill the Wargs' which is also a DL 5. But ever time I hit Dungeon Level 3, there is a freaking Greater Hell Beast right there! What the fuck can kill that? Nothing seems to affect it, and I'd rather not die against it.

I'm serious about this. It's either in the room I start out in DL3 or it's in an outside corridor, and I just see it in time to make it back to the up stairs with a few hit points left.

Not fun... I'm hoping it's gone tonight when I fire up ZB. But it's been there for the last eight passes up and down on that level. (Bounce up to 2 and then back down to reset 3).

Still armoring up for better survival, so I haven't gotten the WCs yet... just building up for the eternal dive. ;)

Watch out for the Doom I quest. It says Dangerlevel 15, but I lost a 20 something character to it. I guess it's easier if you have fire immunity since they mostly lob fireballs at you.

The low Dlevel Greater Hell Beast is a joke. It's mentioned in one of the readme files. It does no damage. If your level is high enough, you can kill it, but it's not worth it. I just find it annoying because it follows you 'attacking' several times, so I usually run for stairs to reset the level too. If it corners you, just attack until it transports away.

Darkstar
28-03-2002, 00:59:48
Dashi... that wasn't a joke in ZBand 2.6. I've lost about several characters to it for not being fast enough to the stairs. So it's a joke in 2.4? Cool. Thanks.

Got her up to level 6 last night. Tonight, I got her up to level 8, and my computer froze up. Which kind of makes me feel good, since I was given a pair of gloves of Agility (+2) as a reward for winning the 100' random quest but forgot about them and sold them for pennies!

Level 25 and holding at 1000 feet, have low resists, but no free action *cringe*, and I have to switch weapons to see invisible.

Must have free action.

I'll be gone again this weekend, no computer at the "camp", so you all can bypass me easily.

I'm on #3... and get At up to CLevel 10 at the moment. I'm unimpressed with getting POTIONS OF INFRAVISION for the last couple of quest. Sigh.

And the very first time I hit the DL1 to collect the junk and get some money for basic dungeon diving... I sell off a potioin of Wisdom, a potion of Strength, and a potion of Constitution (for pennies, of course, as I didn't have an AU for Identity, and I wouldn't have ID'ed them anyways... off level 1!). What were they doing on DL1??? Gr!!!!

Sir Penguin
28-03-2002, 23:06:52
Got back up to level 8 today, but was given some scimitar of Slay animals or something instead of those gloves :(. Oh well, it let me sell off my old war hammer of slay giant.

There you go, DS. You got all your good item rolls on DLevel 1 with those potions, and you got crap for your rewards. The RNG giveth, and the RNG taketh away :)

Darkstar

Yeah... I suppose. I just really liked what I was getting in my first and second attempt. Maybe I won't get swatted so early this time around...

Sir Penguin
29-03-2002, 07:52:53
I'm playing this character really slowly for some reason. I had one of my test VCWs up to level 27 in 300000 turns, and I've got my current Antara at level 17, half a million turns into the game. Must be the Ranger's slow levelling. I'll probably get bored before she dies :).

SP

Darkstar
29-03-2002, 08:26:29
I've just got Ants up to CL17 in the past hour. You bastard. :D

DaShi
29-03-2002, 10:01:50
My character seems to be leveling up faster than the VCW. Or it maybe that she is weaker and thus at lower Dlevels with higher Clevels. Also, the only artifacts I've found have been daggers which have little damage.

I don't understand resistance. I thought that for every item of resistance your vulnerability dropped by 1/3. So two rings of fire resistance should give you 2/3 protection. Add armor of fire resistance and that should be 100% resistance.

Anyway, my character has an amulet of acid resistance, armor of resistance, and his natural acid resistance. Yet, acid still damages my items.

Darkstar
29-03-2002, 10:08:05
That acid resistance is for you, and the item itself confering it, if they follow basic dungeon crawling magic. I asked about that before... seems you need Acid Immunity, straight out.

And the bonuses for resistance might not be additive. Might be just biggest, or might have a diminishing return.

Darkstar
29-03-2002, 10:10:06
The only artifact I've found so far is the Phial. Glad for it though... no worries about light. And lets ya see invisible in ZBand 2.4, apparently.

How do you activate item/artifact powers, btw?

DaShi
29-03-2002, 10:58:00
shift-A activates artifacts.

MDA
29-03-2002, 16:18:17
resists from items are something like 1/3 off damage - temporary spell effects from casting or activations/potions, etc add another 1/3 IIRC

multiple casts or overlapping resists aren't additive. My Antara hit level 26 during breakfast this morning, still no free action.

Qaj the Fuzzy Love Worm
29-03-2002, 22:29:26
The elemental resists come in two flavours - temporary and permanent. Temporary is from spells or activations, and lasts for a short while. Permanent comes from equipment resistance (and sometimes mutations). In total, you end up taking only 1/9th damage from elemental attacks if you have full (ie. temp + perm) resistance.

Elemental attacks consist of Acid, Elec, Fire, Cold and Poison.

The higher resists are all (IIRC) full resists, plus shield you from other effects. If you have shard resistance, for example, you'll only take 1/9th damage from an attack, and you'll be protected from cuts. Nexus resistance will protect you from all but 1/9th of a nexus attack, and will stop your stats shuffling, and prevent blink or teleport effects.

[Edit] Multiple resistances of the same type (ie. two perm. fire, two confusion, two temp elec etc.) will not be cumulative. Only one source of each type and flavour of resist counts. So two perm fire and one temp fire is the same as one perm fire and one temp fire - 1/9th damage.

You can get immunities for the four basic elements (not poison, AFAIK). This will prevent ALL damage to both your character AND his equipment. This is why people love Thorin - Acid Immunity is very nice. Cold immunity will stop your potions shattering. Fire will prevent scrolls, staves and books burning. Electricity will also destroy some types of equipment (I think I had it happen to one of my rods once...)

Reflection bouces some magical and non-magical ranged attacks back at the attacker. I think there's a %age failure rate, which means some attacks get through, and reflection depends on the type of attack (bolt magic tends to get reflected, but breath will get through).

Some forms of resistance are (in ZAngband, perhaps others) useless against certain attacks. I believe there's a high-level monster confusion spell that ignores your confusion resistance. And I know that there are paralysis events that will get through Free Action.

Generally, if you make sure you have just about everything covered (sometimes difficult to do without having just the right combination of equipment, though Power Dragon Scale Mail will help, lucky bastard :) ) and have a reliable source of the temp resists, you'll do okay - if you don't go thinking you're invincible :)

Darkstar
29-03-2002, 23:43:47

I got her up to level 17. I was talking on the phone to my parents, and my friend came by and played for a bit. He stopped when he realised that he'd got me in an uncomfortable position. When I started playing again, I got a few unlucky phase doors, and died. Oh well.

SP, how are you going to catch up with MDA like that? ;)

DaShi
31-03-2002, 08:04:12
Looks like I may be the one with the best chance of beating MDA. I'm about to reach clevel 29. I just found the cloak that activates for transport so I ditched my trump weapon for a defender.

Do you find better items, if you go down the dungeon with less gold? It seems whenever I go down with under 10000AU, I find more excellent items, which I can sell to put me near 30000AU each time. It could be that I am delving lower.

I finally found the weakness for that damn dlevel 18 guardian. He doesn't chase you so I shot him with several arrows with no affect. Following up with fireballs wasn't the best idea (bye arrows), but I had to weaken him before moving in for melee, which he is really tough. It seemed nearly all ranged attacks have little effect, but one. ;)

Got back up to level 16 in about 2 hours this morning :). I was given Trumps of Doom as a quest reward for the 200' quest. I'm still feeding off the cash from that one. 250' (warg quest) gave me a 'horrible visions of death' feeling, but all there was was a bunch of wargs and a pair of Greater Hell Beasts :(.

So far the best I've done is CLevel 16, dead, maximum DLevel 800'. Got trapped by a lame Phase Door roll.

Looks like the half-way mark standings are:

DaShi, CLevel 28 (maybe 29)
MDA, CLevel 27
SP, CLevel 26
Darkstar, CLevel 24
Qaj, CLevel 16

I am determined to break the CLevel 30 level!

Up to 29 today, around 1150'. I found a nice artifact weapon that gives me three of my five basic resists (the others are covered by my natural acid resist and my armour of resist cold), plus immunity to fear.

Nah, I'd have to completely rewrite that post to make it correct.

Is there anyway to remove the nomagic ability from an item? I found the mask of terror and I want to wear it for all it's abilities, but I still want to use magic.

Qaj the Fuzzy Love Worm
05-04-2002, 16:32:17
Heh :) Terror Mask is an interesting item. I hope you've got it *ID*d. It has some other interesting quirks for non-warriors, the most interesting being the Ancient Foul Curse

Meanwhile, I've got Antara 7 (or so) up to CLevel 14, and have found a number of interesting things on the first two dungeon levels. Not only did I find the Phial on the floor at 50', I found Nature's Wrath on the floor at 100'. That's right, a deep dungeon spellbook. Next up, the reward for my 200' quest was the Dagger of Fiona which, among other things, gives +2 to speed (for a total of +3 at the moment) and raises my damage per round to an average of 29, which is better than I was getting with some of the ego weapons I had been using in previous incarnations.

So either I'm poised to do well on this character, or doomed to die horribly by RNG. I'd post a dump but it's at home.

Name: Antara
Date of Death: April 5, 2002
Cause of Death: Intense User Stupidity

I should learn to stop playing while burned out. I was doing the Vault quest (alongside my nice little pet Cyberdemon, whose magical figurine I'd bought before I'd hit turn 1 million). I found Sting in the first quadrant I looked in, but decided to keep going (hey, I had a pet Cyberdemon to take care of things). My Cyberdemon cleared out the northern quadrant, and I just had to cast a whack of stinking cloud spells in the Eastern quadrant to get rid of all the Software Bugs that had breeded in there while I was cleaning out the southern quadrant. So I take my Cyberdemon and head towards the last quadrant, having no idea where I was going to put anything interesting that I found there, since I'd found so much stuff so far that I had dropped all my scrolls, non-essential potions, and so on to make room for it. I start to clean the last quadrant of Software bugs with Stinking cloud spells. And it just so happens that my Cyberdemon is right behind me, waiting for me to get out of the way. And it just so happens that I miss the arrow key, and fire a stinking cloud too close to me. And my Cyberdemon, who gets mad at me and starts to fire rockets at me. It didn't take long for him to get a shot that did more damage than HP I had. So, the lesson we learn here is, never drop your teleport scrolls when you've got a Cyberdemon nearby :).

Goodbye, Antara!

Well, I cracked CLevel 30... then died. Bloody oriental vampire. I'd just got myself out of a hand-to-hand fight with something or other that drained my stats via a handy Phase Door scroll, when I land about 5 spaces away from a green V. Thinking I can take care of it with a few arrows, I fire a few in its direction, until it points and curses. I die. Damn!

High points of the game came early:

a) The Dagger of Fiona (2d4) (+7,+9) (+2) {quest, 100'}
f) The Phial of Galadriel (+1 to searching) {floor, 50'}

c) a Nature Spellbook [Nature's Wrath] {!k!d!v@G4@b4@m4, floor, 100'}
f) The Phial of Galadriel (+1 to searching) {floor, 50'}
j) The Metal Cap of Thengel [3,+12] (+3) {somewhere around 300'}

Some nice early finds! And, looking through that list, what do I find in my inventory but an un-ID'd Aquirement scroll!! Damn it. I could have recalled to DLevel 127 and read that for something nice.

Arrrgh! I read a scroll that destroyed my beautiful defender flail! I sold all my other excellent or artifact weapons long ago.

I refused to delve any farther until I found a decent weapon. Eventually I found a sword of extra attacks (+2). Didn't keep that to long when I found a Tulwar that is sharp, gives electrical damage, and has so many skill points that I still get 4 hits with it. :bounce: Sharpness can really make a difference.

So I wondered out into the wilderness and came across Grendel and his horde. After a long grueling battle with many teleporation scrolls, I came out victorious!

I don't see how you guys can reach clevel 30 by killing only ~5000 enemies. I'm now at 32 with 15153 kills. But the farthest, I've delved so far is dlevel 25.

MDA
08-04-2002, 17:53:03
I got killed by Grendel this morning, I'll dump the character tonight. I got caught without my staff of teleportation, I'd guess it was destroyed by an arch-vile some time earlier. If only I had a magical figure of Beowulf. Too bad Antara didn't have her own teleport spell, - do pattern weapons activate for teleport, or is that trump? Had a damn pattern weapon in inventory, should have tried it.

Anyway, Char level 28, dungeon level 1200', but not killed by a white mouse at least.

Sir Penguin
08-04-2002, 19:22:21
I think it's Trump that activates for teleport.

Looks like DaShi will win, unless somebody has a day off today and tomorrow (or someone else is lurking in the background)

That was the other neat thing. I've had it happen twice now, especially on games with a lot of quests.

I went dungeon delving, and ended up getting Edison as a random quest reward (I forget at which level). I usually don't use Edison, but I'm thinking with a character that can cast Light Area, it might be a better choice.

But I digress. I carted Edison back up to down and dumped it in my house. A few CLevels later I did the fixed quest that gives you Edison as a reward, and lo and behold, received a second Edison.

It's an acknowledged bug of 2.4.0, and was fixed in a subsequent version (I think - it may just have been "fixed" when they moved up to 2.6.0-style wilderness).

DaShi: I went up 11 levels by killing one monster. Just find a monster that's worth a crapload of XP, find it's weakness and be really lucky and voila! It makes for a quicker, but more nerve-wracking game. Why do you think I went through eight Antaras before getting a decent post? :)

(Qaj's comment: I started writing this email at 8AM, but due to work I'm only getting around to pressing the send button at 2:20PM. Busy day  )

I'm still on my second. My first was killed pretty fast. But I play fairly cautiously. I just started exploring the areas far outside of the towns by clevel 30. I haven't done any of the Quest Danger level 25 or above yet. The Danger level 15 quests scare me. But it does make for an annoying slow game, especially when I've had less luck finding good items as I have in other characters.

All my recent levels have been bad feelings. Also a lot of horrible visions of death. Of course, I've got to see what it is all about. Usually just a room full of trolls. I've must have killed a couple thousand trolls and their like by now.

DaShi, don't forget to post your CD this time around :) I've got you on my Excel Leaderboard sheet as CLevel 32 at the moment, subject to subjective adjustment.

I'm also considering a new rule. It has come to my attention that the subjective 2 CLevel adjustment for dead characters can be circumvented by taking a CD one round before you die. This is less than fair, as you would still have a dead character in one turn, but you get 2 extra levels on the Leaderbaord.

So, the new rule is as follows...

Only two types of CD can be posted:

Dead Characters
Live Characters with 100% Current Hit Points

Since no posts in this current round have conflicted with the new rule, this rule is effective immediately.

Sometime before C#14 I'll update the Official Rules page.

Can still circumvent by dumping before you dive. Adding two levels when you're lv30 is more than I would likely gain during one dungeon foray.

Oh, of course. But you'd have to be expecting to die during that particular dive. Unless you're some kind of anal player determined to dump before each dive.

Maybe the honour system should be extended to say "If you die, you must post your dead dump, other wise any other dump will do provided your Current HP are at 100% of Max HP".

Better?

And is all this talk about dumping vaguely gross? :vom:

Darkstar

Still can be circumvented.

And it's not much trouble to dump before the dive. Just keep saving it to the same file, yes?

Maybe you should just not award a bonus for 'Live' Character dumps. Gets rid of the whole problem. Otherwise, you need seperate live versus dead rankings, to keep people from trying to gain a +2 point score for a round, yes?

Doesn't matter to me on this round. I'm dead. She finally met her match against a bunch of swords and spell books. The level said "Horrible visions of death," and I saw all the monsters with my detection rod. But I've never met those kind before so I had to see what they could do. Darkstar, you misunderstand. You don't get a bonus for living, you get a penalty for dying.

I wonder, then, if I just shouldn't scrap the death penalty. What do y'all think? Anyone got any other bright ideas? If we scrap the penalty, I'll probably retroactively adjust the past rounds, giving +2 to all dead characters.

Darkstar

Penalty for dieing... bonus for living. Same thing. One gets you more then the other.

I think it depends on whether you, as the referee, are judging the best character based on which is most likely to defeat Morgoth/the Serpent of Chaos/other bad guy, or which has advanced the farthest in the two weeks given. If it's the former, then you should take the state of lifefullness of a character into account (a dead character can't kill the nasties); if the latter, then life or death doesn't matter, a highly-advanced character is a highly advanced character. Personally, I don't think that life or death should be relevant to the results, because I've always thought that death of a character is its own limitation and penalty, in that it ends your chance of taking that incarnation to a higher level. It's basically the same limit as the two-week time limit, only it will probably come to pass quicker.

Of course, you could make a completely objective point-based system from clevel, artifact & ego equipment value, stats, and so on, but that might be a bit of extra work :).

Well, Qaj has already said it a subjective 'best to win the game' judgement.

But that never made sense to me... as a dead character cannot win the game. So it would seem that it has to be pure advanced level, and live characters just get a reward because they have the possibility of advancing further in character level.

Sir Penguin
10-04-2002, 06:58:55
From where I stand, their reward is that they are able to advance in character level. If the two weeks are up, then they are not able to advance in character level any more (within the challenge), which is the same effect as death.

Qaj the Fuzzy Love Worm

Well, that put it in perspective for me. You're all crazy and I won't listen to another word!

Er, no, that's not what I meant to say. Now that's I've read that, I'm thinking that the subjective adjustments should probably be scrapped. I created them in response to DaShi's character with the Power Dragon Scale Mail, suggesting that that character would be better able to advance and destroy the Serpent. However, SP's argument has led me to think that okay, if the character is in a better position to defeat the Serpent, why isn't it more advanced? The answer being, of course, the time limitation, which is the same for everyone. Which is universally fair, since we all could have received some uber-artifact like Bladeturner 5 minutes before the deadline. That's just the luck of the RNG.

Okay. So I'm decided now. No more subjective adjustments (hurrah!) which means no more rewards for great equipment (since the equipment is the reward and enables you to advance quicker/deeper) and no more penalties for death (since death is it's own punishment preventing you from advancing).

Thanks for the insight people :) In just over 2 hours I'll be able to post the new Leaderboard with the subjectivity taken out. Since there has been relatively little adjustment the changes should affect the positions of the challengers. Let me see... Nope, the ranking is the same. Expect the update soon.

The 13th Angband Challenge is now CLOSED. Any late entries will be disqualified. The final standings are:

1. DaShi, CLevel 32 (dead)
2. Qaj, CLevel 30 (dead)
2. Sir Penguin, CLevel 30 (dead)
4. MDA, CLevel 28 (dead)
5. Darkstar, CLevel 24 (dead)

The official winner in this challenge is DaShi, whose responsibility it will be to roll up the new character. Challenge #14 will begin one week from today, at approximately 2002-APR-17, 2000 hours (8PM).

I'll be updating the leaderboard in a few minutes.

So how do I do this?

Roll a character? Zip the file? Send it to Qaj?

add in "choose a variant" at the beginning and you have it exactly.

I have another Antara at level 24, but too little too late. She'll keep me busy until next week, though.

Qaj the Fuzzy Love Worm

With MDA's extra instruction, you've pretty much got it.

But, to be more specific...

Choose a variant from Thangorodrim (http://www.thangorodrim.angband/) Most Challenges will be either ZAngband or Angband, since those are the two most popular, but you're not restricted to just those two, of course. However, you should really be familiar with the variant in some way so you have a general feel for how the character you pick will act.

Next up, pick the race/class etc. of the character you want, and roll him/her/it up. Give it a name, and continue. Once into the game, set the difficulty by selecting options such as "Small levels always on", "Monsters behave stupidly", Autoscummer off" etc. Pretty much any of the taboo options, since the others are changeable by the user.

After you've done all that, save the character, quit the variant, and navigate to the $ROOT/lib/save directory. Find your character file. Then mail it to me (zipping is also nice, even though the file size is pretty small) at bogus_SPAMac@ausi.com (without the SPAM).

Sir Penguin
14-04-2002, 03:04:45
Can you modify the options you can at birth during the game? I'm thinking specifically about streamers in the dungeon, arena levels, pillars (or whatever they're called), and those sorts of bloody annoying things.

Oh, and I think that Qaj should be disqualified for using Z2.4.1 instead of Z2.4.0. ;)

SP--Note: I don't really think that. That was a dirty lie.

Sir Penguin
14-04-2002, 03:05:38
My point being that DaShi might have to modify those options before he rolls the character, rather than after.

I think Pengy is right...

Lady_of_Chicken
14-04-2002, 21:28:05
Oh, hey! 2.4.1. How about that. Perhaps some explanation is due...

2.4.1 is my own "private" compile of the 2.4.0 code. I added some code to allow me to play the way I wanted to.

Specifically, the game allows you to set an option to always produce smaller than usual levels. A few years back, I posted to Usenet that someone should write code to allow you to set a specific level size, and had my suggestion shot down by some loser who thought he was God's gift to Angband.

So, later (actually early last year, I think) I sat down and re-coded 2.4.0 to include a new set of options that specified the maximum horizontal and vertical size of the dungeon. The range varies from 1x1 to 3x3, translating to 1x1 to 5x5 screens wide/high. Whenever "always create smaller than usual levels" was on in the birth options, the new options would kick in.

Usually I set the x and y limits to "1x1". It tends to make a faster-paced, much more difficult game. It cuts out a lot of the available vault types, and means that there's usually nowhere to run/teleport/phase to in a pinch. It means that random quests every 2 levels are much more dangerous, since you usually start with an OoD monter (or five!) in the same room you start in.

The reason I badged it 2.4.1 is so it can determine the difference between save file versions with the extra option setting. In other words, 2.4.1 has two extra bytes of info that throws the rest of the save file format off.

When it reads a 2.4.0 file, it automatically sets the maximum dungeon size to 3x3, and I don't change it, so there's no impact on any challenge, since 3x3 just uses the existing code.

I do have a second, much more modified version of 2.4.0, but I leave that one alone for the challenges :)

----

As for the birth options, yes, you'll need to change them before you roll up the character proper, as they can't be changed in-game. That's why I hate games with "terrain streamers" set to on. They're so annoying! Not that I'd advocate changing them if they were available for changing in-game, since that could be construed as altering the intended difficulty of the game.

And I remembered what I wanted to post a few days ago! And this is for everyone. Please, when rolling up a character, don't use the save file of an old character to base it on. You'll include monster history too. This isn't too much of a big deal, but it does blow out the file size a little, and could give an advantage to someone.
