I went and took the plunge today, due to the current CRT at home being a complete flake (strange leaky degauss mechanism which causes the screen to shake and resize and flicker, very bad for the eyes; and also a short in the permanently attached VGA cable which randomly turns the red channel on and off ) and purchased two black Samsung 710n LCD monitors.

Sure, they're not the absolute greatest (being analog only) but I can live with that. The great part about them is, after rebates, they're only US$229 each, and they're rated at 12ms! On a budget as I am, that's abut the best price I could find for comparable monitors.

I would have liked one that went up to 1600x1200, but I can make do with 1280x1024, since there's not a whole lot of apps that cater for more than that anyhow.

So I'm eagerly awaiting next week, and my new babies to get here.

And as sucky as the current CRT is, it's way better than the thing the kids are using (some god-awful 15" CRT that only goes up to 800x600, and halves the brightness when you do) so they'll inherit it. Though that should only be until my employer auctions off all those lovely Gateway VX720 monitors for $20 sometime this year... :D

Ok so where'd you get em?

LCDs are getting damn cheap, aren't they? My CRT is losing brightness, it will be good to be able to afford a new monitor when it quits. :)

Hell yes. I was waiting for a slower refresh model to get cheap enough to buy, then these appeared on Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=24-001-171&DEPA=0) for $279, w/$20 instant rebate, and $30 mail in rebate.

So I'll have a nice 2560x1024 desktop when they arrive later this week :)

(Actually, I was thinking of getting dual 19" CRTs, but the shipping on those are killer unless you get 'em locally, and I didn't find anywhere decent that had some around here).

I'm now running a pair of Viewsonic VE710s.... Same specs as above.
Much better than CRTs.

Great for playing stars!

I'm using my TV sometimes, but it's a bit grainy, even though its a fat ass widescreen plasma tv :/ I want a 19" TFT flat screen monitor because this one i'm using is a bit pants.
