Because they're not triangles

The green and red triangles are not similar, in other words

Green and red are similar in both, or? Just the lower "large" triangle is actually bigger as the upper line is not straight.

still don't get it

check the rise and run of the green and red triangles

slopes not equal

it's actually quite a big difference.

Top angle on the red one 82.8 degrees, top angle on the green one is 63.4 degrees.

Did you take a compass to it Mike?

Own goal. You mean a protractor.

It's conveniently on squared paper so I could count the length of the opposite and adjacent sides - from there the problem's trivial.

I'm sure this has been asked on this forum before.

To risk PHding it.

The red slopes at 3 in 8, the green slopes at 2 in 5, which is a different gradient.

Thus the upper "triangle" has a "concave hypotenuse" whereas the lower "triangle" has a "convex hypotenuse". the difference between the two accounts for the area of the "missing" square.

Mmmm that was fun. Got another one ?

Hmm most of that page isn't in English :(

Anyone want to translate the black & white picture for me ?

It's a not so very funny parody on the yearly campaign on safe handling of fireworks... It says something like "Stick your finger in once again, you might not be able to do so anymore after the 1st of January".
