View Full Version : one of my students from last semester offed himself

I gave him a better than average grade, but now I'm going to think about this every time I'm hard on them. Great.

HelloKitty

It happens unfortunatly. Most med schools in the US have a suicide every year or so.

Don't blame yourself (unless you were mentioned in the suicide note.)

KrazyHorse@home
09-02-2005, 06:07:45
Don't know. Do they fax me a copy of the note if I was mentioned?

KrazyHorse@home

Hell, I only have 15-20 students a semester.

Maybe this is part of the reason I only have 8 this one.

RedFred

Early February is one of the peak times for suicides. But don't blame yourself for something that is totally outside your control.

KrazyHorse@home
09-02-2005, 06:43:50
I'm not blaming myself. I'm not stupid enough to think that this was my fault.

I'm just saying it's going to nag at the back of my mind where the cobwebs are and where logic doesn't work.

KrazyHorse@home
09-02-2005, 06:45:50
Of course, it could always turn out that this "apparent suicide" was actually murder, at which point it would become the 3rd homicide in a year out of a student population of 6000, bringing us up to Baltimore City average.

RedFred
09-02-2005, 06:46:05
Yeah. I know a subway car 'driver' that is still affected by the guy that chose to splatter himself over his train. This was more than ten years ago.

KrazyHorse@home
09-02-2005, 06:48:16
Luckily I didn't have to experience anything like that. Not too upset by it. A bit antsy though.

I also have to teach section on Thursday to a class of kids who are all knew him much better than I did.

That ought to be fun.

Martini
09-02-2005, 07:49:01
Not nice - especially if you still have to teach all the kids who knew him.

A bloke I was at uni with (but didn't really know too well) killed himself just before I left - being a drop out is definitely a better option.

miester gandertak
09-02-2005, 08:57:23
hmmm. sad story.
Should be very traumatic for all of you, is there a possibility to not do class but talk to the kids about it?

KrazyHorse@home
09-02-2005, 09:10:37
No. I'd rather do class anyway.

KrazyHorse@home
09-02-2005, 09:11:55
If I get in and 3 people start bawling I'll change my mind, but my students are almost all boys, so it won't likely happen. They'll just hold it in and beat their kids 20 years down the road or something.

Homicide in Columbus Ohio skyrocketed while I lived there. I just went from bad to worse (well, next door to worse)

Columbus is not my fault. All my victims are still listed as missing.:cute:

When I was at Uni we had one freshmen go off his meds and decide to drive down a crowded street at 70mph. He killed five people and injurd dozens before crashing into a light pole directly across the street from my apartment.

Other then that we just had the drunken fools who would play chicken on the seaside cliff tops who'd get themselves splattered. Occationally some tool would drink himself to death. But most of these people didn't go to my uni instead they were just out of towners who came up to party.

Oerdin
09-02-2005, 14:17:40
Oh, yeah. My junior year the room mates of one of my friends throw a party where some drunk 18 year old high school girl fell off the cliff front balcany and ended up dying at the hospital. Her older sister went to our uni and she invited her underage sister (who never drank) to go to an IV bender. Sad, really.

Isla Vista is the student area which is completely surrounded by the University of California at Santa Barbara campus. Just about everyone who lives there is 18-25 and it is beach front and know for massive parties. We're talking dozens on a friday or saturday night and they're usually Keggers open to anyone so you walk down the blocks closest the beach until you find a band or party you like then walk into the house and party.

This is known as an IV bender because after about the fourth house or so you're completely shit faced and there's still more free parties to go to plus the road is paced with people in the exact same state.

Dyl Ulenspiegel

Best thing about it is that it's as long as a normal car is wide so you can reverse park into a normal roadside parking space. eg

They cost a fortune and for what? To look like a tit? Plus what are the chances you're going to take profit of its size and find a spot which would not host a small car but would host smart? I think the chances are very small. IMO either buy a motorcycle and you cna partk it in more places than the smart or get a small car and don't pay a fortune.

Interesting.
I only have found national statistics so far, for Italy.

According to 1 source, we had 634 murders in Italy in 2002 (~57m pop), from 625 in 2002.
Another source shows a graph from '84 to '98, where murders started at 2500, got a peak of over 4000 in '91 then got back to 2500.
A third source states 639 for 2002, claiming that's half than 10 years ago.
The discrepancy might be due to police and judiciary sources (body count vs. legal actions...), or maybe that one only counts intentionals...

Those sources all state the standard measure is in murders per 100 000 pop.

300 / 600000 = 50
In Italy we had 1.12 overall in 2002!
North 221 0.9
Center 109 1.0
south 304 1.5

I understand that in urban areas that ratio can get enormously higher.
Even considering smaller geographical territory as Regions (we have 20) the highest gets to 3.4

I found this urban data too for intentional murder numbers in 2002:
Milan 28
Rome 37
Paris 45
Berlin 68
London 197
I don't have exact population data right now, or how that source considered those cities territories, but that figure would put Milan around a 2.2 ratio.

anohter source states european national murder ratios at:
1.09 Italy
1.11 Germany
1.52 UK
2.04 France

Wait, I found out that the figures regarding cities were actually referred to provinces (something like counties, we have 103 in Italy), at least those concerning Milan and Rome.
The higest murder ratio for provinces in Italy goes to Nuoro (in Sardinia, where the footballer Zola comes from and where I spent last summer holidays :D) with a "murdering" 8.9, while all others are below 3.9. Milan's province has 0.77.

If you live where 50 is average (do you have a link to stats?) and you feel normal about it, well we do indeed live in a different world. Maybe I should have considered this when reading all those threads about gun-bearing ... :p

Nah.

Yeah, because no drunk people ever get in brutal fist or knife fights.

Hey, maybe someone should make killing people illegal.

Dyl Ulenspiegel
10-02-2005, 15:05:20
MoSe: The definition of "Murder" or "Homicide" used in those stats varies even more than the examples you mentioned. For example, it usually does not include attempted murder, but some jurisdictions count it under "murder" for crime or conviction statistics. Another element is whether manslaughter is included, and the huge variances in the definitions of that.
