I'm buying a new computer soon, but I've got no idea what I'm supposed to be looking for! If any of you could give me a few pointers it'd be greatly appreciated.

First you have to tell us what do you want to do with it. :)

Also, how much money you're willing to spend.

Don't get an HP or Compaq, Dells are OK for cheap stuff, a local shop would be better for higher-powered stuff.

Evesham are very good. Not cheap but you get good computer for your money.

Don't get an HP or Compaq

And the last 2 PCs I bought were 2 different brands, and they were ...

My advice would be to either build your own, or find some kind soul you can con into doing it for you.

I want to play games on it, do my homework and go on the net. I can spend up to about 500

Did think about getting someone help me build my own, but got stuck when it came to who and how many sexual favours I'd need to repay them with.

If it's any use, I bought my last 2 PCs from here. Auctions are a cheaper way of going if you're not too fussed about the spec. (http://www.morgan-auctions.co.uk/) I'd added more momory to one, and the only real regret is that there weren't any free bays. Something I didn't think of at the time, and why I'd probably go back to a self build next next.

Or there's always ebay. Bought my girlfriend a decent machine from there and it did have free bays (just no OS !)
