I've heard some people say being PHd is when someone explains something to you which you didn't know while other people seem to believe being PHd is when someone explains something to you which everyone already knows so no explination was needed. I'd like to petetion for a clear public definition so there is no confusion in the future.

I thought it was when someone explains something to you which everyone already knows so no explination was needed and the explaination ruins the stiupid joke that was being made.

It's when someone makes a bad joke, and then it is explained.

But the explanation must also be an attempt at being funny. Usually about the same thing which everyone else is finding subtly funny, expressed in an excessively obvious fashion.

That and it's likely to make your eyes glaze over :D

No. PHd explanations are not funny. Sometimes people try to make up for their failed stupid joke by making a funny explanation out of it, but that's cause they realize their original joke was bad and weak to start with. This is what causes everyone to roll their eyes or just have their eyes glaze over as they dream of Kitty spanking Vincent with a Hot Frying Pan on the Balcony.

The explination also has to be longer than it could have normally had been had a been a better more well worded explination.

I suppose the explanation has to come from the man himself. Now the humble history of the PHd comes from me being on a week of earlies and posting in the afternoon. Now this week this seemed to leave me particularly fuckwitted and I couldn't spot a crap joke to save my life and thus when discussing the joke in question, the PHd was born. In my opinion it is giving a completely needless explanation of the bleeding obvious, a joke anyone could get but no one acknowledges because of it's sheer awfulness yet one individual, usually muggins here, feels the need to go into an intricate treatise on the nature, context and philosophical implications of said joke much to the chagrin of others. When performing a PHd stating the bleeding obvious is good, but for extra PHd points, repetition, using long words and just going on too bleeding long about it. These will really be the hundreds-and-thousands on the trifle.

I found the original (http://www.counterglow.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=589131#post589131). Forum subtly jokes around some theme, PHding poster kills joke by referring directly to theme.

I thought a PHd is about a person(no names)who is deliberately trying to bore someone to death. :p

yeah, that's the original definition

But it was me who then coined the shorthand form PHd and proposed it for the glossary (http://www.counterglow.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=591186&highlight=Provost+Harrisoned#post591186) entry.

Of course I had in mind a subtle joke between PhD and PHd
:cute: :o

So, have you lot come to an agreement yet then ?

Does it have to be vaguely humorous, or not ?

And where's the poll ?

Someone posts a subtle joke someone else sees that as only a potential joke and so tries to make a more explicit joke out of it but fails because everyone else (except Drekkus) already saw the humour in the subtle post. That's a PH'd and it's an attempt to be funny, that's unsuccessful.

Now put it in the cocking glossary so we can forget all about it again!
