View Full Version : I want to make a RPG

23-01-2005, 05:24:28
You know ... I got this urge to attempt to make an RPG right now. What I want to do is basically take things that I really liked about the systems of a couple of games and blend them together into a hybrid. Then I want to puit a little spin into the character creation and development. I want to try to think up a kind of unique race to play, and also make a couple of original classes for the tried and true races like the dwarves for example. Also, although basically there's only so much you can do with earth wind fire and water, I want to create a unique spell or 2 for each type of elemental spell sets. There are a couple other ideas that I think would be potentially interesting to add in too.

If I only had the mad computer programing skillz and a good idea for an engaging plot, I think I would actually try to make a MMORPG or something now.

*points and laughs*
*wipes tears out of eyes*

Good one!

I was being serious ...
Actually there are various freeware/shareware programs that can help you create entire RPG games. I have no idea what's good and what isn't though.

Alas the real holdback would be my general laziness. I guess I can just log ideas into notepad and maybe sometime I'll do something with the ideas ... but probably not knowing me.

Yeah, well don't worry, your impulse will pass.

Kosh, making an CRPG is tons of work. More then, say, making an LP album or creating a novel. Most of it isn't fun. Less then 1% of it is. The rest is just coding.

You want to create interactive fiction/stories, try a prebuilt system that you just create the settings and story. If you have to build the entire world, code up that basic plot objecs (like "Locked Door" or "Magic Mirror" or NPC actions), you'll give it up as a lost cause. It takes a special kind of boredom or idiocy to code up a CRPG.

There are real adventure system packages you can get for free. Or you could go get NeverWinter Nights and use that for you plots. But in any case, you'll find out how much work it is. And if you don't like that anallity, you'll never finish it. After all, you won't see people play your baby, so its not like making up a night's adventure for your friends and running it over the weekend.

A good CRPG needs a plot. And you are missing that.

Why don't you just get yourself an XBox or PS2 and enjoy a nice Japanese CRPG instead?

a rocket propelled grenade, on the other hand, has no need for a good plot.

Don't crush Koshko's creative urge! Doesn't matter if he ever finishes his RPG, he might learn some cool stuff along the way. It may even be fun if he doesn't ruin it by setting goals.

I figure that it will take forever. I'll probably never get around to doing it. I know myself. I am noting a few ideas onto Word documents though. This way I can potentially incorporate them into any future game that allows you to be creative with spells and campaigns and the like.

Worldforge might be vaporware, but they appear to be in the "let's write an RPG" business. I wouldn't bet against a finished product in 10-12 years time from project inception. :)

Well I did some googling a couple of nights ago and found various programs that can help make games as well as some general map-making programs. With a little work, we could probably make a CG RPG if we wanted.

Were any of the map-making programs good? I'm looking for one of those.

I haven't tried any out yet. I did DL a couple of them though.

IK'm so bored I decided to have the last post in every forum.

25-01-2005, 04:56:12
Why not use the neverwinter nights engine?

25-01-2005, 06:07:31
Was suggested. I suppose Kosh would need to buy it first?

Plus I wouldn't be able to include some of my twisted touches (read: stuff I'm thinking up while making this post) like an item whose sole purpose is to help get your character laid. Thus the losers playing the game can live vicariously through the character. Also I want to incorporate a crazy regenerating 'immortal' alchemist that doesn't know what he did to achieve the highlanderism because he discovered that he was like that after a massive distastorous explosion destroyed him and all his record. Plus what about the elven acid pee attack?

25-01-2005, 06:16:14
Why can't you do that in NWN? You could get laid all you wanted in Planescape: Torment, after all.

25-01-2005, 06:19:40
Remember Leisure Suit Larry?

25-01-2005, 22:32:51
Again, so? You can do whatever you want. Women will tell you text is way hotter then 16 color large block pixels coming together and apart with a black bar over the "meeting". Come to think of it, most guys will tell you the same thing. ;)

Again, you are just making excuses not to do it.

</Cheesy purple suited green villian voice> What's that? MINDTAKER! I knew it! I knew it! I knew it! Why? MINDTAKER!

26-01-2005, 02:51:20
Yeah, you can do all those things in NWN, you just don't get to see the fucking, you make it a cutscene and if you want text.

You can make an acid pee attack, just don't expect an animation.

Sounds like he wants to make a hentai game, rather then a serious adventure. And even for that, there are free game engines out there. Since Kosh isn't an amateur furry drawer, that means he won't have his own pics to insert. I'd suggest trawlling a few Hentai sites and harvesting a few of the Usenet anime, bgirl, or hentai newsgroups.

A bit of work, it can be done.

26-01-2005, 06:29:03
Well I was joking around there about the ideas. I would include bizarre crap like that though if I could ... unless I was set on making something serious.

26-01-2005, 10:52:46
"Pornstar Tactics" (working title). Assemble a squad to fight battles with gangs of monsters and badmen on the way to the conclusion of some story. Sure, it would be hard to see much of the Jenna Jameson character when she's wearing a cloaking device or an armored exoskeleton, but sex sells.

If the game does well, possible sequels include "Rockstar Tactics" and "Rapstar Tactics." :)

Or even "Darkstar Tactics."

26-01-2005, 13:10:37
I think I'd like a streetfighting game where the characters are all celebrities. A Celebrity Grudge Match video game.

Pat Morita's Ki strike vs. Dr. Phil's Tough love tirade.

26-01-2005, 13:59:37
Yeah that would be great

26-01-2005, 23:30:06
Deacon, are you encouraging him to clone those poor Hentai/Fighting games? Well, I don't suppose Kosh could do any worse then is already out there as the best of them.

27-01-2005, 02:05:49
Dragon Porn!

27-01-2005, 02:09:12
That would be in the furry newsies.

27-01-2005, 03:25:52
Well I'm going to wait until the scientists advance their Chimera research (see my thread in Counterpoint) and then start creating my own mythological creatures.

27-01-2005, 03:39:10
What I had in mind was something turn-based on a 2-D isometric battlefield. Thinking man's Hentai. :)

But with the right engine, it wouldn't be limited to Hentai. Other ideas include Mercenary Tactics (Jagged Alliance 2), Futuristic Tactics (Future Tactics), and Fantastic Tactics (Final Fantasy Tactics). Lots of sequel and lawsuit potential. :)

27-01-2005, 20:46:12
Gunshield Sagi Something? Been done. Just not in Engrish. ;)

Hell, leave out the Hentai, and just go cheap B-game. Then sell it through a chessy offshore point for $5 a game (splitting the money 50/50), using others people art. There's already a minor industry doing that. It's called FanFic and FanArt. ;) Rarely do they get sued, because that just causes more people to rip off the originals and be able to charge more for the new products.
