View Full Version : Not enough harddrive space!

I just had to go buy 2 new 160GB hard drives.

My current 2x120GB RAID0 was full.

And get this -- that is not including pr0n! (I have a different 80GB drive for that)

I've just about filled up one of my 30 GB hard drives.

Amazing how much crap gets accumulated, that folk are so reluctant to delete.

You need to go out and get yourself a single 20M disk, like the old days, to discipline yourself properly. ;)

I remember having to upgrade to a 20MB HD so I could install Wing Commander 3 !!

Those were the days!

I can't imagine what takes up so much space. I've got a 100gig drive and about three album's worth of raw audio. That's about 20 tracks of 24bit 48k audio per song. My hard drive isn't even half full.

I've got a 30gig drive that's nearly full, but that's 19gig of Mp3s and loads of big photoshop/illustrater files and 600dpi scans. Fuck knows how you fill up a 240gig drive (unless you download loads of films).

Really, really high quality porn.

Download loads of films & TV series, use my system as a TiVo-like PVR, and rip many DVDs (for example, every episode of Futurama and Family Guy in high-quality DivX 5).

I'm using 18GB out of 80 at the moment. And 1/3 of that is music. I don't think my hard drive will fill up for a long time.

Sounds a bit rude. If you're drunk. You said "hard".

DivX is great, isn't it? Sure, you lose chapters, menus, etc. But the compression beats the living daylights out of MPEG-2.

Gary
23-01-2005, 12:01:53
No idea, but if the compression is that good you'd think they find a way not to lose your chapters etc. too.

The problem is one of "containers". DVDs have all the schemes for audio, video, subtitles, and menus worked out. DivX is just a video scheme. Typically, DivX video is paired up with a soundtrack within a AVI file. There are new containers being worked on, but AVI is the only one that's supported today by player hardware. Still, that's an improvement on years ago, when no player supported DivX AVIs.

As far as I'm concerned, when Sony releases a 400-disc multi-format (CD, DVD, MP3, DivX) player, it's Game Over. :)

Won't be compatible with Panasonic's multi-format player though. ;)

I just ordered a 250 MB hd, and I think it will be full pretty quick, as I intend to use it like asher is doing.

250 GB, I assume?

I've got 40 GB in my laptop, and I want tons more. Home machines always need more harddrive space...

What are you people saving? I mean I only have a 40mB HD and I have like 32mB free.

Ha ! Right then !

I run my PC from the double density floppy, and I've downloaded the Internet off it so I can browse offline.

Just my luck. Got a message that they're shipping my new casing, coolers, dvd writer and card reader, but NOT the new HD, since it hasn't been delivered yet.

Asher

Why would you delete anything?

To create space for more stuff?

Download CCleaner, I did that on my friends computer and it free'd up 5 gig worth of shite that he didn't need.

I've got an 80gig HDD and i'm using 10gig, thats with no porn, just games and music :p

oh, why did I ever believe that?

I think it was full within 8 months. A new 160GB external HDD was full 8 months later, and a 400GB HDD is full 8 months after that. I'm pretty sure having an exponentially fast rate of data accumulation is a bad idea, but I'm not entirely sure what to do about it.

Keep buying more storage or delete old data.

I have a terabyte of storage, mostly full of anime.

That said...why would anyone waste the space for HQ video of cartoons?
