View Full Version : CM 00/01: Challenge 1

Sean

OK, this might not work out, but it should at least be fun. The rules:

- No cheating. What’s the point?
- Use version 3.89—it has the updated TV money for English clubs.
- Each challenge lasts four weeks. The challenge is set by the winner of the previous challenge. The challenger has complete discretion over the winning criteria, number of clubs managed, number of leagues played, database size, etc.
- No-one can set two challenges in a row.
- You can try as many times as you like, but please play the challenge out before quitting. Football’s a funny old game, and all that.
- To show your team, Print to File the relevant competition(s) and squad screens. Post them between [code] tags to preserve the formatting.

So…the challenge. With Sunderland, finish as high as possible in the first season.

EDIT: Sod that, league position only. If two teams tie on league position, goal difference, and goals scored it goes to cup success. If that is still level it goes to profit/loss.

Settings:
- English league foreground (duh), no background leagues.
- Normal database.
- Use real players.

Due date is 8:30 PM GMT, 18 April 2002.

Rules subject to change (tell me why they suck). Have fun .

The Shaker
21-03-2002, 20:19:30
fantastic.

I'll be off to do that then.

Sean
21-03-2002, 20:21:08
Oh, if two people win the league ( ) and an equal number of cups, then I shall decide who had the best season. Unless I was one of them. Er.

Nav
21-03-2002, 20:21:59
why not do it on the inbuilt points system in the game?

and sunderland???????????????

Sean
21-03-2002, 20:25:57
Because in real life, you don’t get manager points, you get league points.

Sunderland because they have a good squad and transfer kitty, but aren’t title contenders.

Nav
21-03-2002, 20:28:47
But it's the best way of judging performance if it's close surely? No offence but if you're in the game you can't decide who wins loses etc...

The Shaker
21-03-2002, 20:29:49
and they smell of fish

Sean
21-03-2002, 20:30:55
Same as real life, and a good manager is a lucky manager.

There are so many ways of calculating a winner, I have gone for the one I feel is simplest.

The Shaker
21-03-2002, 20:31:14
as long as it's not goals for.

it's hardly likely to come up is it?

Nav
21-03-2002, 20:33:21
I think it would be much more fun... if someone could win the league, while the other guy comes 4th and wins both cups, and just edges it in the points.

Sean
21-03-2002, 20:33:27
I dunno, I think most people will finish is positions 5-10.

Sean
21-03-2002, 20:35:06
Which would the chairman prefer in real life? :hmm:.

Nav
21-03-2002, 20:35:33
well that was just an example.

Sean
21-03-2002, 20:37:57
Yeah, I know.

I tell you what, if this one doesn’t work out too well, we’ll alter the rules. At least try it :).

Venom
21-03-2002, 20:51:41
I like Nav's thinking as well. It's gives you more incentive to have a complete season instead of just the League. Instills more of a sense of competition as well. And it may give someone who's in 15 place in the league due to an untimely injury stay in the competition.

Sean
21-03-2002, 20:53:52
It is one season, and Sunderland are not in Europe. The only way you can accumulate lotsa points is by havign a good cup run, which is easier than winning the league (compare and cntrast: Blackburn and Man Utd).

Venom
21-03-2002, 21:13:52
Hey it's your challenge boss. You guys are the CM pros. I'm just a Yankee hack.

Funkodrom
21-03-2002, 21:41:44
Is this starting two weeks from right now? Didn't we say a month?

Sean
21-03-2002, 21:43:04
Whoops. Amended.

Funkodrom
21-03-2002, 21:47:30
I'll try and at least get it installed at the weekend. :) Going to bed now, feel like crap. :(

Nav
21-03-2002, 22:22:11
Having problems making windowed mode work on a dual monitor setup. If I can't get it working I dont have the time for this... :(

Nav
21-03-2002, 22:28:13
Got it working... wicked. :D

Sean
21-03-2002, 22:30:04
It’s so much more addictive in windowed mode!

Sean
21-03-2002, 22:30:25
Just don’t let your screen saver come on.

Nav
21-03-2002, 23:00:38
turned that off... especially with dual monitors..

btw set up the season with sunderland. start off playing Liverpool(A), Man Utd(H), Chelsea(?) nothing like an easy start! :D

Sean
21-03-2002, 23:32:49
I got Liverpool, Spurs, and United .

Funkodrom
22-03-2002, 11:04:31
I'll try and install it and get the patch tonight. How big's the patch?

Funkodrom
22-03-2002, 11:05:03
I'll get to find out about all the cool new features in 00/01 as well. :D

Venom
22-03-2002, 13:01:51
I find myself wondering what version RC sent me. What does the cover art look like for 00/01?

MattHiggs
22-03-2002, 13:19:30
ARGH !!!

I just uninstalled CM 00/01 yesterday. I haye having to versions of CM on my computer.

Venom
22-03-2002, 13:22:44
It does make you feel like some kind of drug addict, doesn't it?

Funkodrom
22-03-2002, 13:27:00
Own Goal? Does it say 00/01 on it?

Venom
22-03-2002, 13:28:12
Can I read? No

Can I remember what symbols are on the case? No

Can I remember the box art? Yes.

Funkodrom
22-03-2002, 13:28:46
Venom,

I could send you my old CM00/01 then you can make a decision re CM4 without shelling out bucks for 01/02.

It's a picture of a football on a blue background that says Championship manager 00/01.

Venom
22-03-2002, 13:33:33
Is it a Mitre football? Are there diagonal lines across the blue backgroud?

Funkodrom
22-03-2002, 13:36:25
Yep.

But I think there are similar covers on all the latest ones.

Plus RC said he'd send you 00/01

Venom
22-03-2002, 13:42:37
So I think I do have 00/01.

Funkodrom
22-03-2002, 13:48:09
Cool.. you can join in then.

Venom
22-03-2002, 13:51:40
But I probably won't this round. Maybe the next one. I got a new game I must spend time with.

Funkodrom
22-03-2002, 13:52:45
What's that?

Funkodrom
22-03-2002, 13:53:08
And you've got a month...

Venom
22-03-2002, 13:54:03
Thinking about reviewing it for CG, so I won't really have a lot of time to get a full season in.

It's IL-2 Sturmovik.

Funkodrom
22-03-2002, 13:54:37
Ah. Is it any good?

Venom
22-03-2002, 13:58:37
I've not played it yet. Had it for like 3 days but stupid CM keeps taking up my time. Plus I've been trying to finish my hockey season.

Funkodrom
22-03-2002, 14:02:46
I can't believe I'm installing CM again. I never wanted a life anyway. :(

MattHiggs
22-03-2002, 14:07:27
Have you got the blood patch for MOH yet Venom, it's pretty good. I think there is a new one out too. There is coding in MOH that potentially has about 20 dead bodies every time you kill someone. So it's easy to implement decapitated bodies depending on where you hit them. That should interest you.

Also I've discovered on the d-day bit you can shoot your own troops as much as you want and they don't die; but it's great to see all the blood splurting everywhere!

Venom
22-03-2002, 14:10:41
I went out right away after the review and got a blood patch. I haven't seen that new one with the decapitations and such but that sounds like pure quality.

You have to shoot your own troops on the beach to get blood, they don't bleed when the germans "shoot" them as there's no bullets, it's just scripted events. The blood makes the game even better.

Sean
22-03-2002, 17:25:52
Venom, if by diagonal lines you mean hexagons, then yes :D.

Sean
22-03-2002, 17:27:43
Oh, and the patch is 12.9mb.

Funkodrom
22-03-2002, 17:56:21
Play in a window!!! That rocks! I've got Media and Unruly players to contend with. :)

Derby Home, Villa Away, Charlton Home.

Sean
22-03-2002, 17:56:59
Just beat Liverpool in my first match! Schwarz scored a pilderiver and Quinn got ahead of Westerveld in the air for the second :bounce:.

Also, I never used them that much, but I really miss the Compare Player feature and the ability to make manager notes. The fact that you cannot scout Next Opposition is just criminal.

Sean
22-03-2002, 18:07:38
How come Mike gets the easy matches to start with? Two Midlands teams?!

MattHiggs
22-03-2002, 18:09:45
Installing it now :D

MattHiggs
22-03-2002, 18:13:10

Just remembered I lent it to a mate a few months ago!

Sean
22-03-2002, 18:14:23
I just lost to Spurs. SPURS?! I, who beat Liverpool, lost to Spurs?!

Must have been the home advantage. Man Utd coming to the Stadium of Light next.

Lost first friendly to Marseille 2-1. Kilbane injured for 3 months in first minute. :(

Funkodrom
22-03-2002, 18:25:16
Ah bollocks... transfer funds just dropped from 10,000,000 to 1,900,000 for no reason!!! I haven't bought anyone yet! Bastards!

Sean
22-03-2002, 18:27:39
Ack! We outplayed them in the first half but Quinton Fortune scored on 45 mins.

Oh, and Michael Gray has got injured. Yeah.

Phillips scored on 80 minutes, having been on a rating of 5 until that! 1-1!

Funkodrom
22-03-2002, 18:28:51
Now, a day later it's 4,400,000?? What's going on?

Sean
22-03-2002, 18:28:54
Mike, that happens when you make bids (I think). The game assumes you are going to be successful with all of them, so your transfer budget drops. Just bid the money anyway.

Venom
22-03-2002, 18:31:20
Mike, did you bid for someone?

Sean, take that! Quiton Fortune? You loser!

And stop talking about it. You're really making my want to play.

Sean
22-03-2002, 18:32:25
That was the plan :p.

Anyway, SuperKev equalised once I told him to man-mark Stam, who was marking him out of the game. Go figure.

Venom
22-03-2002, 18:36:32
That'll teach Stam. Bastard.

Oh and Roy Keane is now gone in my Man U season. 2.9 million pounds. And my team is still winning by one goal and scoring in the last 10 minutes of every game.

Sean
22-03-2002, 18:37:52
You should have sold him to my Atalanta team. Ah well, I shall just make do with the 11m-rated Damiano Zenoni :bounce:.

Venom
22-03-2002, 18:39:23
He's no Roy Keane.

The Shaker
22-03-2002, 18:42:24

Ah. It never used to do that. Used to keep the budget the same until you actually spent it. This way is really confusing.

Well the last game of the tour was 0-0 stopped easy tackling 'cause the players were a little fitter. 2 losses and a draw, one goal scored. Exciting pre-season!

Sean
22-03-2002, 18:45:22
It is stupid, 01/02 goes back to the old way.

I played one friendly, against Schalke, and won 1-0. I don’t like touring, because your players get injured.

Sean
22-03-2002, 18:46:25
Shakey: don’t pretend you’re managing Bury!

The Shaker
22-03-2002, 18:48:02
The sad thing is i find myself buying Reading players...just so i can wreck their season and get them relegated :)

Sean
22-03-2002, 18:48:18
Phillips out for two weeks, bought Kanoute to deputise.

Sean
22-03-2002, 19:06:48
OK, so my team only plays well at home against a big team. Great.

Who got the player award, Shakey? ;).

The Shaker
22-03-2002, 19:09:41

The Shaker

:(

and my keeper is injured, have tio play with sorenson instead

Sean
22-03-2002, 19:25:36
Sorensen is class! Who did you buy, Buffon?

3-0 up against Millwall in the league cup at half time. Michael Gray is back, and is playing a blinder. Kev should return for the Ipswich game.

Sean
22-03-2002, 19:26:01
Oh, and Nunez will be back! Woo!

Funkodrom
22-03-2002, 19:27:27
0-0 vs Charlton.. no strikers is making this hard. Picked up Asaba cheap but he's not really good enough.

Sorenson is great! My best player so far.

Sean
22-03-2002, 19:34:18
Aaagh! Completely outplayed Ipswich but they had two goal-line clearances and Quinn missed 4 headers. 0-0.

Sean

I have seven scouts all working full-time. Hasn’t helped, though.

Sean
22-03-2002, 22:43:30
Beat Cheslea with my fifth league win in a row, and I also had two League Cup wins during that time. The next step is a big one, though: I am eight points behind third-placed Spurs, and Arsenal in my next match. Away. With Emerson Thome suspended. Eep.

Funkodrom
23-03-2002, 09:33:10
I'm up to 6th on the same points as 4th and 5th. Just beat ManU 2-0 at home. New striker Chupa Lopez is brilliant, great partnership with Phillips. Got my first away win at Southampton as well. 4-2 with 3 sendings off - 2 for them, one for me. The board are very impressed with the way the team is performing at the moment especially after the win against Man U (who are well clear at the top with Arsenal.

Cheating scumbag French whore!

That notorious diver, Patrick Vieira (?!) lost me a match against Arsenal after I had taken the lead twice. Vieira dived to win a penalty, they scored it, and Henry headed home in the last minute. I then drew with fourth-placed (!) Southamtpon, and lost 3-2 to Leicester, with yet another dodgy penalty going against me :(.

Did you know that only six teams have topped the table this season? United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle, Leeds, and Bolton.

funny old game innit.

Nav

Difficult start,

lost away 2-1 to Liverpool, a good all round performance, but just not good enough..

lost at home 0-1 to ManU, slightly unlucky, good performances from Southgate(I know!) and Barthez kept us from equalising

won away 2-1 to Chelsea, at 1-1 Zola had a disallowed goal for off-side, straight back up the other end we got a penalty that Phillips duly tucked away. Bit lucky win, but deserved.

Sean

I would never sell McCann, he’s scored 5 goals from midfield already this season.

Kilbane can go jump, though.

Sean

Not 5, sorry, 7, and in only 12 starts. Two of my top five players on avg. rating are the two keepers. D’oh.

Funkodrom

I hardly play McGann... maybe I will start using him.

Haven't needed another keeper other than Sorensen yet but he's my highest rated.

Sean
23-03-2002, 16:35:02
I have a Fifth Round tie with Birmingham and am back to 6th inthe league after four wins on the bounce (again). I need some consistency :(.

Julio Arca has been banned for four matches, and this version doesn’t let you appeal! What’s up with that?!

Also, I haven’t just been playing for the challenge, and I’ve lined two Bosmans up for the close season.

Nav
23-03-2002, 16:39:33
Interesting result (not involving me) Wycombe lost 3-0 at home in the league cup 2nd round to Sheff Wed. Second leg half time Sheff Wed lead 2-1(5-1agg). Guess what? The match ends 3-6 to Wycombe. (6-6agg). Wycombe win it with a goal in extra time!!!!!!!!

Sean

Even worse: Jurgen Macho had a good game in the cup so I played him regularly, and he played well. Until the derby with the Geordies, when he made two howlers to give the Magpie scum the win. :bash:.

Oh, and McCann is excellent for me: he has scored as many as Phillips!

Nav
23-03-2002, 17:22:13
Sorenson has played excellent, unfortunately he got injured in the last game v newcastle for a month..

Funkodrom
23-03-2002, 17:26:01
Yeah, I've been playing Helmer at left back with Gray in front of him... when they've both been fit. Nunez has been good on the right as well.

Starting to Play McGann now, he's good so far.

Sean
23-03-2002, 17:34:22
So, next match, Sorensen scores an own goal as I lose 4-2 to bottom-of-the-table Man City, who only had 4 shots on target.

I am not going to win this challenge.

Funkodrom

Sean

Bought Denilson?! That explains a lot :).

I bought several players, but as first-teamers I bought Brahim (free), McAteer (2m), and Kanoute (2.1m).

Values at end of season: Brahim 2m, McAteer 1.5m, Kanoute 6.5m.

Typical line-up: Phillips Kanoute

Gray McCann Hutchinson Oster

Helmer Emerson Brahim McAteer

Sorensen
