Not having to worry about licensing anything from the NFL, the big alternatives to EA's Madden NFL are celebrating. Midway has big plans to do what it has always wanted to do with the Big Pigskin...

What is it they want to do? Sex, drugs, rock and roll, politics, scandals, and a bit of actual football.

That sucks. Because eveyone was starting to catch up to Madden gameplay wise. Now they'll have to play with fake players or just numbers. That's not as cool.

They should make it modible on PC, so you could add the correct names.

Adding in the names of all the players and teams yourself is a major pain in the arse, though. I guess if some other poor geek could do it and then you could download some sort of mod with the right names then it'd be better - but would that be legal?

I'm guessing not.

Like legal matters.

If its moddible, people will do it.

EA isn't the RIAA. The 'we can't sue everybody' clause still applies... =)

I suck at Madden football worse than anything. Which is pretty damn bad.

Depends on how the other system are put together. If they allow for importing data, then they could publish "stats" that let players download "reality based" data into their system. You cannot copyright or trademark stat sheets. Nor published data.

Now, you'd have to modify the team NAMES, as those are protected. So, you got to go into your game and change "Tennessee Cyclops" to "Tennessee Titans". But you could have all the player DATA and player stats with an easy download. Just takes them paying someone to take the published stats and type it in, then put it on a reachable server somewhere.

Should be very similar to how other game companies got around football clubs (soccer clubs to us gridiron fans) not being licensed in other games...

Yes, and it's annoying as shit in those games too.

Well, everything annoys you, Venom.

Yeah. You sure do.

The million dollar question is if it's more annoying than EA.

I'm starting to think yes.
