Has anyone got any tips on battlefield 1942? I seem to be getting slightly less shit but often I'll play a game and die ten times more than I kill. The problem is that I can never see the enemy before they kill me. I can just about make out my own guys because they have red/blue names above their heads but the baddies only do if you point straight at them - which I find almost impossible if I'm trying to avoid getting shot. How people do that, successfulyy kill three or four people with a burst of fire and find the time to type messages to each other is mind boggling.

Oh, and if I spot some enemy armor or plane or anything I'll try to press the radio buttons but all that happens is that I'll crouch. The only radio buttons available to me are "roger that" and "go go go". I can't even "request pick up" while all around me do.

I know I have to practice more.

Any general hints tips/jargon appreciated.

turn on extended radio commands in the options.

Rule number 1: cover

Rule number 2: more cover

etc.

When your just starting out try and stay still and crouch while firing - dont panic. Find yourself a good point where you can fire from, windows/rubble etc that minimise you exposure sa much as possible, If you see more bad guys than you can handle - dont fire. if you see a tank and your not AT, not fire at it etc. try and avoid attracting any attention until you are sure you can kill the other guy before he can pin point you. Medic class is the way to go - especially in city maps (which are my favourite) Gives you a good weapon and the all important medic kit - shoot/heal/shoot/heal. means you can outlast any single opposition. even better - try and stick with the rest of your infantry. 2-3 together is far more effective than 2-3 solo players. if your playing FF on, watch out for grenade spam. if FF is off lob those grenades everywhere!

And learn where the (shite) snipers go then kill them (EG on stalingrad theres always 2-3 idiot snipers on the top floor of the buildings where the ladders go up the outside. They seem to think nobody knows about them. Simply wait for them to go up the ladders and settle down, then follow them up and SMG them in the head (or ex-pack them which is even funnier)

The good snipers you cant do much about - by the time you know they are there you are dead and they arent there anymore.

oh and dont go for head shots with automatics unless you are at a longish range and prone. Instead aim for center of mass and fire bursts of 2-4 rounds. The barrel rise will put the last couplein their head assuming they are not already dead!

Just what I needed to know. You're a star. :)

things not to do:

1: if an allied guy is repairing an unoccupied tank its not an invitation to drive off in it - expect the engineer to expack your arse as you drive off. Tank drivers tend to be engineers so they can fix thier own rides...

2: shooting your teammates so you can get to the plane/tank/whatever first is not big or clever.

3: If you see some guy firing off a mobile artillery gun when theres no-one in the drivers seat do not get in it and drive it off to the front lines. Chances are he is one of the few players on publis servers who can actually use artillery. He cant do that if you keep moving the vehicle around and he's definately not waiting for a driver to take him to the front lines. Mobile arty lasts about 1 second in combat against anything armed with a tin opener. It may look like a tank but it isnt.

Repeatedly spawn raping a flag on a public server is pretty cheap too. Especially if its not the last flag. If you can take the flag take it, if you cant dont, sitting just out side the flag radius in a tiger repeatedly spamming the spawning infantry is just cheap. On the other hand if its their last spawn point thats fair enough - if its not capturable theres not much else you can do anyway.

Oh yeah pilots are the scum of the earth who just ruin everyone elses day. Kill them, kill them all.

Other things that will rapidly get you flamed/kicked

1:Trying to drive the destroyer up omaha beach.

2:mining the only bridge out of your base on any map.

3: parking jeeps across the runways of allied airfields.

Things that are just too funny to not do.

1: fill backseat of jeep with expacks, drive straight at enemy tanks, bail out and hit detonate at the last minute (aka kamikaze jeeps)

2: flying the B17 upsidedown under the bridges on any map

3: leave a line of landmines across the runway of the other teams airfield (or leaving a landmine/expack directly infront of the wheels of an enemy plane/tank)

4: on stalingrad hiding at the back of the ground floor behind the stairs of the two main city spawns where you can shoot the enemy leaving the building in the back before they can even see you.

5: plane camper bowling - get yourself an jeep and try and run over as many enemy plane campers as possible before they kill you.

Plane campers are also the scum of the earth and need to be killed.

At what times do you play, protein? I'm playing Call of Duty now more, but if you're online, let me know, so I can hunt you down. :D

protein
06-12-2004, 02:33:28
Will do. I'm still rubbish so it will be easy to hunt me. I'm the one not moving in the middle of the war zone either looking at my map or eating muesli. My user name is Rebus.

I think the most I've killed is 8 but I died about 20 times on that match.

I think my problem is that I'm too brave in relation to my skills. I quite like hitching a ride in a plane, bailing out, hitting the parachute just before I land in enemy territory and then killing as many baddies with their own tanks before they kill me.

Most of the time I find myself in impossible situations like being armed with a machine gun and grenades and trying to fight with a tank. I just kind of end up dancing closely around it hoping somehow my grenade will blow the both of us up.

Nav
06-12-2004, 13:41:23
Hopefully my pczone dvds have some the latest patches. I think I'm probably only patched to version 1.4 or summit.

Beta1

christ 1.6 is a 200mb download

Going to take an hour or so off the crappy EA server.

Nav
06-12-2004, 20:57:47
I'll try and play tomorrow night, assuming I don't have to do too much patch downloading.

Beta1
06-12-2004, 22:23:27
yeah me too, just played a bit of single player to relearn the controls.

And remember why I dont fly.

that and my magnet like attraction to trees, and buildings, and the ground, and other planes...

Darkstar
07-12-2004, 00:17:03
That isn't a problem. Obviously, your plane is trying to help you destroy stuff. You just need to learn to guide it into what to destroy. ;)

Beta1

so I should only fly if I'm playing the japanese then

think thats the incremental patch I was downloading - you need 1.6 as well i think (and thats the big one).

So whoes online tonight?

and we should get a counterglow teamspeak server or something

protein
07-12-2004, 18:41:37
I'll be on after dinner and a bath. My internet connection has been really slow today. I tried playing earlier but I had some connection problems that lead to too many deaths.

Nav
07-12-2004, 19:25:38
I've got the latest incremental patch. I now have 6 patches to install after I've actually installed the bugger.

What's a teamspeak server and can I access it using All Seeing Eye?

I'll probably be on sometime after 9 (and I'm 'Pulped' btw).

Beta1
07-12-2004, 19:34:25
teamspeak is a 3rd party voice coms package - I used it with the outfit i joined during my brief planetside subscription.

basically it allows you to take the piss out of the guy you just killed ( or more usefully coordinate a group of people).

Not sure what you need to set a server up - I just used the client. I might go and look it up if you guys wont be on till later.

I'll start playing again if I ever fix my video problem. Something got fried during a thunderstorm and it's never been right since then, so I just quit playing altogether.

Beta1
07-12-2004, 20:06:01
I've just set up a teamspeak server on my machine - if anyone ones to try it out they need the client from www.goteamspeak.com

server is at 217.17.113.31 password: hardman you dont need a login. You do need a microphone!

i should be able to run it alongside BF1942 but if anyone has access to a server its a bloody small program - i would stick it on my laptop and run it from there but the girlf has run off with it for the week.

Beta1

thats what happens on that map - if the russians dont break out early they dont break out. You guys were very predicatable though - none of you went for the windows on the building next to the alley. You have more chance of making the jump from there that coming out of the little side alley entrance!

i was on fire on aberdeen though - only died once (to a stray landmine) and came in third on a map i usually suck at.

thats a good server - the guys who run it are pretty cool, dont stack their clan up one one team and kicked a TKer after you left. Guy killed one of our own tanks then one of our team (this in our own base at point blank - no question that it was intentional). he took another shot at an admin and ran off He got cornered next to the base by 4 of us and was summarily executed by the admin! then he started mouthing off he got kicked. very very funny. but i didnt see any of the usual "your beating a clan member so your off" or the "admin guy wanted that tank"

Although one of the guys did hog a wespe for most of the game on tobruk but then he knew what he was doing with it so cant complain.
