So, this whole download MB and MB of stuff once you have bought HL2 so that it is fully installed - what do you all think? I have a feeling with game companies becoming increasingly worried about piracy that this might become quite a common practice...

Think it'll work?

I don't know if it will work, but I think it's a retarded idea by Valve.

What, so you can't play it at all without downloading shit?

Fuck them.

That sucks. What about people on dialup?

Or indeed, people without the net full stop....

Less than a year ago I was stuck with a 28.8 as the best I could afford for home. That was bad enough.

when i had my 1mb broadband i thought Steam was brilliant.

When i tried to activate my HL2 with a dial-up connection it was hell on earth.

For people who have bought a copy from a shop it seems something a joke.

It's totally out of order.

Do you have to log in to get the download? If so why not just have some kind of very brief compulsory online registration. Why download megabytes of code?

Unless it wasn't finished when it went gold.

It's because they learned too many evil lessons from those god damn devil bastards at Sierra.

Everyone make sure to hit Steam tonight and download deathmatch because that didn't come with the game and everyone and their mother is trying to download it.

Well, the other options are worse.

Like, you have to be online just to play the game... and the game, while running, confirms that you are legal and connected to the company server every minute... meaning, that if their server goes down for any reason, or if too many people want to play their game at once, or there is a network slowdown between you and their server, the whole product freezes up and kills your whole computer requiring you to do a very hard reboot.

Even though the whole game came on DVD. All that to stop their product from being pirated... bastards. Think I'll break out my tools and crack the fucking bastard, then post it to a warez site. (Seriously... that sort of shit really pisses me off...)

All this crap has certainly put me off buying the game thus far...I would keep my eye out for a cracked version even if I legally owned the damn game. Ridiculous...
