View Full Version : Music you're banned from listening to

30-11-2004, 21:55:55
There's certain music that I'm "banned" from playing in front of my wife simply because it drives her up the wall.

The Cardiacs

Yet, she'll happily let me listen to Einstuerzende Neubauten and even likes a few of their tracks.

So those of you with live-in partner type things, what, if anything, do you have to reserve for private headphone moments?

btw. She's banned from playing:

Jesus and Mary Chain

Nothing wrong with a bit of Suede! Or Jesus and Mary Chain for that matter... though Clannad??? *shudder*

When I used to live with my ex-girlfriend I was banned from playing wishy-washy electronica like Kruder & Dorfmeister, Board of Canada etc, ska stuff like the Specials, and Funhouse by The Stooges ('cos I used to play it all the time).

She was banned from playing Linkin Park, System of a Down's first album, Incubus, and the second fuckin' Foo Fighters album (which has got some good songs on it, but not when you've heard them 100,000 times...)

Ah, happy days...

I saw Clannad a couple of times when I was a nipper. I quite enjoyed it.

No System of a Down? You bastard!

Although to be fair, I can imagine that album being rather offputting if you're not into that kind of stuff.

Although I don't live with her, my g/f complains bitterly if I attempt to play Swans, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum or Carla Kihlstedt in her presence.

Admittedly I do make derogatory remarks about most of her music collection whenever she puts any of it on, so I'm not really in any position to claim great injustice...

I used to hang out with some of the Cardiacs crowd back in Kingston. My ex-wife banned me from playing anything. My current girlfriend is a lot more tolerant and she stoicly puts up with it. :)

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that my girlfriend actually more than tolerates my music taste. :)

I'm banned from playing the following:-

Current 93
American Music Club/Mark Eitzel
Nurse With Wound
Diamanda Galas
Queen Adreena

She's banned from playing:-

Baby Bird

I can't understand why anyone would find them objectionable.

This is the early stuff, when they were really raw. "Starblood" is a crushing track.

Ah, I've only heard them from "Loved" onwards. Might have to rectify that.

I've got You're Gorgeous on some random CD somewhere if we're talking about the same band. It's a good song...

Do the lyrics stand up to feminist analysis?

Too true, it's up there with "Wake up boo" and "Everybody Hurts" as some of my most hated songs.
