View Full Version : Great gaming moments.

18-11-2004, 21:36:55
OK guys time to decide. Lets have some nominations for great game moments. Not great as in "woot i pwned that hAXXOr", great as in sitting back form the keyboard thinking "wow"

Maybe we can even decide on an all time best moment, maybe not.

So I'll start with a few of mine.

First a graphical/sound type one:

Game : Outcast

OK probably a fairly obscure game but there you go. Released many moons ago and one of the few to use voxels instead of polys, for the time it had pretty amazing graphics. The moment was right at the beggining where having crossed through a portal type thing you break the surface of a lake and as you bob in the water the ripples around you reflect the two huge moons setting in the sky, huge amounts of lensflare and this enourmous musical score, mostly sung by a huge choir. All this while some alien dude waves at you from the bank and a few odd looking animals roam around the backdrop. One of the first games that really looked stunning (although this was back when lens flare was new)

Game: Deus Ex

Definately one of the best all time games. but the moment that stood out wasnt actually in the game. It was when I was talking about it to a mate and we realised that while we played the same game we managed to take almost completely different routes through it and each had done things the other though impossible. Bladerunner managed a similar feat but at least then you knew it was going to swap the story around each time.

last but not least

Game: Aliens v Predator

So many moments here. One of the few genuinally scare games. i dont know anyone who has played it that is not still put on edge by the sound of a facehugger scampering around out of sight.
But theres so much more than just the jumpy bits. Its being a lightenning fast alien, rushing down a corridor straight between two marines, killing one with a single head bite and being out of sight before the other reacts. Its the feeling of invunerability as your shoulder cannon cuts a marine in two as his friends run for cover. Or just the noise of the motion sensor as its starts to ping and all the lights go out...

Theres so many others of course - the ending sequence to hardwar, the first time you saw a star destroyer in X-wing or a storm trooper in dark forces. The first Thargoid attack in elite, the perfect drive by in GTA, the 100+ person firefights in Planetside or the elegant slow motion kills of max payne.

So guys, lets have some more suggestions.

Scoring the winning goal in Super Soccer in the World Cup final, 3 men down, with 1 second left. To this day my greatest gaming moment ever.

19-11-2004, 12:42:36
MoH - Allied Assault

Many really good scripted scenes - but the D-Day Landing, and also in Spearhead parachuting into France - both classic moments...

19-11-2004, 12:48:23
In Half Life when I battled through aliens on my own shit scared for what seemed like hours looking for the rescue party then finally first found the soldiers who were here to rescue me. I was totally elated. Then it dawned on me that they were trying to kill me too. It was so devestatingly disappointing. All that and not only was I still alone but they were after me too.

I suspect I was lucky that I didn't know anything about the game other than "You have to buy this it's amazing" so I didn't know in advance that the soldiers would be against me and the story was unspoilt.

19-11-2004, 13:05:19
Don't they give that plot point away on the box?

19-11-2004, 13:13:40
If they do I didn't read it.

I'm glad I didn't know anyway, that bit wouldn't have had the impact otherwise.

19-11-2004, 15:17:00
I could have sworn there are caps of you fighting soldiers. I'll have to check the box. I'm sure I still have it somewhere. Probably up my ass.

19-11-2004, 15:18:33
There could well be, I can't remember I just remember how gutted I was.

19-11-2004, 15:23:28
I was just making conversation, fuckhead, I wasn't trying to lessen your gaming moment.

19-11-2004, 15:24:55
I know that cockbreath.

19-11-2004, 15:28:21
Try not to appear so petulant then, childfucker.

19-11-2004, 15:31:13
Why don't you just go lick your truck's engine clean or something.

19-11-2004, 15:35:56
I'll let your mom lick my engine shaft clean after she finishes with my shaft.

19-11-2004, 15:46:59
She always likes being a mechanic after throwing someones castrated member to their own dog as a treat.

19-11-2004, 16:12:58
She likes to be covered with something, and it's not grease.

19-11-2004, 16:22:15
No, it's the blood from the severed root of your love stump.

19-11-2004, 16:22:15
The final boss in the original Serious Sam...On the penultimate level outside the pyramid you're fighting thousands of foes when you see in the distance coming towards you the biggest thing in the history of very big things.

The sound of the Cyber Demon in the original Doom, I died three times before I even saw him...probably the most iconic 'boss' on the PC.

The mid-wives in System Shock 2...very creepy the first (and subsequent times) you hear them going on about their 'babies'.

The "zoom in" at the start of Final Fantasy VII and the first time it cuts to the CGI of Sephiroth.

19-11-2004, 16:23:36
Ah, Serious Sam was a beautiful moment from beginning to end.

19-11-2004, 16:26:13
the first time it turns to nightmare mode on Silent Hill. I needed new trousers after that

19-11-2004, 16:32:40
Another Half Life one - when you meet the scientist dude and he's about to tell you how to get out then gets shot in the head.

19-11-2004, 16:55:06
The end of Ico. The only time a game has moved me to tears. I think that has to be my all time favorite game.

19-11-2004, 16:56:35
When you discover you can put on a parachute and motorcycle off the edge of a massive cliff in GTA San Andreas.

19-11-2004, 16:56:43
Flying the millenium falcon

19-11-2004, 16:57:37
The bit where the zombie turns round at the beginning of Resident (it thinks it's a movie) Evil. It's crap now but at the time I thought it was marvellous.

19-11-2004, 17:00:03
The Tibetan levels of Tomb Raider 2.

19-11-2004, 17:01:18
Ooooh.... finding the jet pack in Duke Nukem.

19-11-2004, 17:21:51
using the tazer in syphon filter

Nills Lagerbaak
19-11-2004, 17:24:02
Using the ninja rope on worms 2

Lazarus and the Gimp
19-11-2004, 17:48:40
The first few seconds at the end of the introductory level of Half-Life, where it all goes pitch-black and all you can hear is your own breathing.

Deus Ex- curling up in a tiny wee ball in the shadows, then hearing "SCANNING THE AREA" right behind you.

Grand Theft Auto- Vice City. Powering a motorbike up the fire escape to leap across a road and landing on the rooftop opposite while the camera pans around you in slow-mo.

19-11-2004, 18:03:57
When Civ I first clicked. The successful invasion of Egypt on one of the main continents.

First playing Doom. the step up in graphics was amazing. I was estactic even before I realised that you could go through a door to a game that was 20x bigger than I ever expected (and that was just the shareware version)...

Figuring out how to turn my ship and get past the first level on Uridium way back on the Commodore 64...

Too many more to mention, recent games really haven't cut the mustard in terms of 'moments'. Maybe the most recent was Terry's headed winner in the last minute of injury time in the FM2005 demo!

19-11-2004, 18:45:57
The Jango Jump Jet (or whatever it was called) in THPS4.

19-11-2004, 19:07:59
Discovering the "Sweet Spot" in Sensible Soccer.

Sensi Soccer 1914 Edition that was given away free with Amiga Power in which the ball was replaced by a hand grenade...every 30 seconds it would explode taking players with it.

19-11-2004, 19:12:54
Beating Dracula in Castlevania three, it was nearly impossible, took me weeks of trying.

oh fuck i forgot about them.

They make my skin crawl just thinking about them. And that bit in the cargo bay where with one shell left in your shotgun your going through a series of doors and you hear each one hum open and then clunk closed. Then you hear the door before last hum open again...

19-11-2004, 21:39:18
They were a work of genius...well the whole game was really (apart from the jumpy bit with the alien brain).

19-11-2004, 23:30:33
god yeah, what a fucked up final level.

plus that bit always made me feel motion sick as I could never quite figure out which way was up and then got very disorientated.

20-11-2004, 16:01:46
Killing the four groups of 99 berserkers for the first time in Bard's Tale.

Catching VD from the prostitute in Wasteland (there's a prostitute in gaming that predates GTA? ...and you could kill her?)

Fighting Floors in Ultima: Exodus.

20-11-2004, 17:01:19
I forgot about Ultima Exodus, that game was tough to beat.

The Mad Monk
20-11-2004, 22:07:36
There was a point very early on in System Shock 2 -- shortkly after the time the monkeys are first encountered -- where there was a ladder on the wall leading up into a very dark hole.

I couldn't climb the ladder, because the game had me so completely wound up at that point. It didn't matter it was only a game, or that I could easily reload. I was too creeped out to even think about that.

Best. Game. Ever.

21-11-2004, 16:31:01
He he, I know what you mean, I had to stop playing it in the dark...too bloody scarey.

Lazarus and the Gimp
21-11-2004, 19:47:05
The monkeys gave me a bigger case of the willies than the midwives. Hearing them chattering and shrieking in the distance was grim.

Never finished the game. The weapon degrading annoyed the hell out of me.

22-11-2004, 06:04:09
I cheated near the end, about when your on the second ship just to get through. :o

Jedi Knight 2 - Outcast

I love some of the saber fights - especially when you get hold of dual sabers for the first time - and it feels really intuitive, at least in single player....

22-11-2004, 15:09:07
Civ 1 - When i saw a message on screen telling me that the Romans had completed the Manhattan Project i pretty much shit myself.

22-11-2004, 15:31:27
JK2 multiplay sucked. And I thought it was going to be good.

Civ 1 also had my best Civ gaming moments. Like when I was at war with the Russians, and saw my first tank (I only had cannon..).

Jon Miller

22-11-2004, 16:16:24
Hmm, also two moments in FF7 for me.

It did - too much of a mess - single player was brilliant though...

22-11-2004, 16:51:46
Yes, running through the temple filled with battling Jedis...and killing them all.

22-11-2004, 17:22:14
Making my first vampiric uberweapon in Daggerfall. Using it wasn't nearly as much fun as making it.

22-11-2004, 17:23:05
Starcraft, using Siege Tanks

The first time I flipped the score counter in Asteroids

22-11-2004, 17:24:20
Gettiing the FS II plane into the air on Apple ][ without having a manual.
Winning Impossible Mission (Password was BUTTERFLY).
Getting 220 Pirate points.
And when stuck in a sunken boat with several people playing Op Flashpoint online - until someone restarted the map. 15 Minutes of hilarious chat

22-11-2004, 17:29:05
I had no idea you could win Impossible Mission. God, I sucked at that.

Oh, hiring Minsc in the BG series. More of a character than a moment.

I agree with Vincent on Flight Simulator. That would be tough WITH a manual. F-15 Strike Eagle was much easier.

Shooting elementals in Mechwarrior 2. I hated those things.

22-11-2004, 17:41:36
Playing the Arcomage card game in Might and Magic. Too bad Windows XP killed those games for me.

Arcomage was better than the game itself.

23-11-2004, 09:27:43
Flying under the Golden Gate Bridge in F-18 Interceptor.

Nills Lagerbaak
23-11-2004, 09:35:16
Any of the rediculous jumping manouvers on Stunt car racer

Being down to the last energy bar on my dreadnaught on Star Control 2 having launches all fighters at Funko, just to watch the last remaining figher destroy him!

01-12-2004, 17:49:45
Combat Mission : trashing RC on my first multiplayer game ever
(turned out it wasn't that great an achievement  )

Halo : the first time I saw it, on a big screen TV at a friends place, I nearly did wet my pants. Later, playing the first level with the floods, late at night.

Fifa 2001, creating a player that kind of looked like me, had my name, as a striker in Barcelona, and scoring 3 in the champ leagues final

and many many others, in Civ, Fallout Tactics, Champ Manager, etc... I remember Outcast very vividly too, a very good gaming moment overall

I was quite hard to win. Luckily the most annoying room did not contain a puzzle part.

01-12-2004, 20:22:51
Oooh, setting fire to most of a village in a combat mission game against Beta1. I still lost, but the battlefield looked awesome when it was over.

So many good Fallout 1/2 moments, too. Getting out of Finster's head in Wasteland.

The first few minutes I played Stonekeep on my new PC. I was blown away by the fancy graphics and animation. It was the first game I ever played on my 133 Mhz Gateway!

01-12-2004, 21:02:06
lol yeah that was a very good game. between us we torched so much of that village neither of us could actually occupy it!

02-12-2004, 11:13:37
Playing Super Metroid, I got to the end and blew up Mother Brain in her jar thingy... then she got up....

Just about any movie involving Sephiroth in FFVII.

And, weirdly enough, figuring out how to get through the waterfall in Kings Quest IV. I was like 10 at the time, it was a big deal to me. :)

02-12-2004, 11:16:46
And in the original Quake, the first time I met those blobby blue things. Spawn, I think they were called. Walking down this dark passage, practically out of ammo and health, and what on earth was that weird sound?

04-12-2004, 10:07:52
Winning at pong.

The first time I ever played Civilization. First game I ever bought, and I agonised over the purchase for weeks (I was on low pay back then). It just blew me away (and taught me a lot about history - kinda).

Beating the countdown in the final mission of Dune2 for the first time.

Finding a demo of Diablo on a games magazine, playing it, then watching all my mates go absolutely nuts over it when I showed them.

The absolute best would have to be stuff involving Everquest though. Running around the Butcherblock Mountains thinking that the game was huge, and getting lost less than 5 mins from leaving Kaladim. Running accross West Karana for the first time. Getting a new one torn while staring at the pretty Griffon in West Commonlands. Camping my first Polished Granite Tomahawk. Completing a full set of Bronze armour, back when it sold for a couple of plat per AC point. Seeing the first person in a full set of Armour of Ro (and later completing my own). Pulling the Amy temple in PoF(?) using DA after our other Paladin fizzled and got DT'd. Killing Lucan D'lere for the first time as part of my Epic quest. Killing Aaryonar for the first time in NToV to open up the rest of the named for us, I think i got to bed at 4am that night. My first Slay Undead III kill.

There's just far too may great moments there. :)

24-12-2004, 18:18:39
Defeating te trolls and finally clearing the slums (the first level) in the original C64 version of Pool of Radiance. Finding the jetpack in Duke Nuke'em was pretty cool as well so was the first time I beat Super MArio Brothers or knocked out Mike Tyson.
