Just curious. Thinking about when we've got used to the game, having a CounterGlow Tournament.

The official league looks quite daunting to me, although I'm still playing my first 2 games.

When are you going to make your next move :bouncmsk: ?

Funkodrom

Played 4 games against Shiny, just registered 5 mins ago.

PM or e-mail me with an e-mail address if anyone wants a go, can't promise I'll play you all at once though.

Funkodrom

Only one player has to be registered. Fist if you want a game send me a PM with your e-mail in it and I'll send you a challenge, won't be able to play it until tomorrow now though.

Send me a challenge Mikey!

Shining1

Only the person who issues the challenge has to be registered. Once you've bought your six months, you can randomly spam the entire internet looking for players if you want:).

I just one my first game. I'll challenge you tonight Shakey.

I think I'm nearing the end of my game against MattHiggs.

So I may try my luck at a league game

Shining1
19-03-2002, 09:54:10
Shining1, and I haven't quite finished yet, but the result will be something like a 20-8/10 loss, depending on how much I kill with the last grenade I launched.

The opponents do seem to be good quality. I would definitely recommend trying a few friendly games first.

On the other hand, that was my first time on that map, and I am crap at it, as Mike will attest.

Funkodrom

If you want to see crap you should see me playing with the Autons.

MattHiggs
19-03-2002, 10:29:46
I've just started a new game with Shining, I'm playing Marines.

I am playing Autons with Posterboy, I prefer them especially the missile launchers

Shining1
19-03-2002, 10:29:46
That was quite close in the end...:)

Funkodrom
19-03-2002, 10:36:33
Me vs. You with the Autons? That did end up being close.

Shakey could have beaten me in his first game with the marines vs. my Autons yesterday I think if he'd read the read me before we started like I suggested. I did just sit two rocket tanks by my HQ and lay waste to the entire level which was fun.

I think the latest game we have is pretty cool... no idea what's going on. I feel it's a bit like the bit in Aliens where the marines are wandering through the reactor with no weapons... 6 turns without seeing any of your troops was scaring me. Came out of the opening exchange alright but now I'm really nervous. (and you've probably seen the next turn results)

MattHiggs
19-03-2002, 10:40:20
Turn 2 and we've already started fighting :D

Shining1

Is this for me? Yeah, my snipers were scouting... that's the last turn I saw but you should get the results of that one back after you send your orders 'cause I sent the orders for the next turn.

The map with the square is a good map for quick fighting. I'm playing Rachel on that one.

Is there a list of Map names somewhere? You can only choose either Random or type one in.

Shining1
19-03-2002, 10:50:54
You can pick up a few of the maps from the website and the patch info. I'll have a look. So far theres:

Forest
Bunker

Shining1

Crossroads

Cool.

Front line must be the one I wasted with Autons playing against Shakey.

Factory is the one I'm playing against you now?

Don't think I've played Bunker yet.

Just sent challenges to Fistandantilus, Guy and Matt as requested.

Also got a challenge from Shiny for a league game.

Going to be busy so don't expect very rapid turn responses and if you haven't played before read the Read Me file and ask for help here. There are a lot of things that aren't obvious when you start playing and aren't silly questions at all.

Shining1
20-03-2002, 00:51:11
Matt: I apologise. I had been wondering how you win that map from the west side and wanted to try something.

I'll send a challenge using the same map again, hopefully now you'll know the angles a lot better and won't look quite so much like swiss cheeze.

(I.e full of holes:D).

P.S Nice dancing grunt:).

Shining1
20-03-2002, 00:52:02
Mike: You've got to let Rachel win so she'll start playing me again...:(

Funkodrom
20-03-2002, 09:26:37
I'm not going to get a chance to let her win I think she's just going to beat me. At the moment it's a critically injured missile tank and a half dead exterminator against a commander. Next turn is probably the last.

I can't believe I missed that commander and medic in that game against you. I should watch the replays not just scan them from far out zoom to see who dies.

Shining1
20-03-2002, 10:02:53
Ah, that's good to hear:D.

Like I said - one of the really cool things about this game is that you play against other people and they make silly dumb moves just like you do:).

The shame of my Grenadier rush is somewhat atoned for;).

Funkodrom
20-03-2002, 10:12:53
She's probably got the save of that now so she'll either be in here gloating later. :( or I'll have fluked it and survived long enough to fire a missile which might have hit her commander.

Yes, stupid moves your opponent makes are OK but stupid moves you make are a little annoying. :) Oh well. Especially annoying that if I'd watched the replay properly I'd have known they were there. I never did see that laser bolt shoot my commander though, watched that a few times. On my save it looks like a perfectly healthy commander gets caught right on the edge of a grenade explosion and then dies. I thought the units had 360 LOS? Obviously not though.

The slow disciplined march of your grenadiers into the arms of my laughing commanders will live long in my memory. :D

Shining1
20-03-2002, 10:20:14
Ahahaha Missiles!!!:D

The sighting rules are totally beyond me. When my Sniper was chasing your Grenadier, he stopped and saw you when you were about 120' behind him.

But I've had several units die 'for no reason' when they got zapped by something that was behind them. It's highly annoying.

Funkodrom
20-03-2002, 10:34:58
Exactly. I'm so dead unless I'm very lucky. It's been a really good game against Rachel. This is the 5th turn I think and it's nearly all over.

There are LOS stats in that stat link I posted but I didn't understand them.

PosterBoy
20-03-2002, 10:41:01
Matt and I are on Turn 24 and it's 6-5 to me at the moment.

I think we're gearing up for our last battle.

I might just run about out of his way for 6 turns and win on points!

Shining1
20-03-2002, 11:36:11
Mike: Which map is that?

Me neither. I don't think those numbers mean very much without a procedure to plug them into.

PB: Not really recommended. He'd only have to find one unit and he could claim a draw or win...

Funkodrom
20-03-2002, 11:43:33
Crossroads? The one I beat you on. ;) It always makes for quick battles 'cause you can normally see each other from turn 1. The challenger gets a really crap start position though.

Fist: PM with your Email. I am stupid and lazy and often don't read all the posts in a thread.

Everyone, RUSH!

PosterBoy

Some interesting info I found

How can I distribute my completed games?
You will need to save your last turnfile (named LSN_G0000XXXX.lsn) into the "games/0000XXXX" folder located in your Laser Squad Nemesis installation folder. The XXXX is the number of your current game.

Then you will need to create an archive file (such as zip) that contains everything stored in this folder. You don't have to process this folder recursively, that is you don't have to add all the subfolders as well.

An update from Gomisan: The Mail Helper Tool (see Question 9) can also be used to do this.

Karlrune adds: "The last turnfile (LSN_G0000XXXX.lsn) may be renamed and placed anywhere, so you could easily set up a different directory in the lsn dir named "finished games" and store your finished last turns there."

How can I watch other games?
See the previous question. You will need to reverse the order of operations. First download the archive then unzip it. If the archive automatically unzips as a 0000XXXX folder then all you need to do is to copy it into the LSN_installdir/games/ folder. Otherwise you will need to create the games/0000XXXX folder yourself and fill it with the contents of the unzipped archive.

In order to watch the game double click the LSN_G0000XXXX.lsn file.

How can I watch my current game from my opponent's point of view?
See 2 and 3. Your opponent will have to send you his files and you will have to copy them to the right place. The problem is that you already have a games/0000XXXX folder and you probably don't want to lose it. A solution is to temporarily rename it to something else.

Matt and Guy I'm playing on the same map that I don't recognise (at least not from here) Playing the Autons (experimentally) against Matt and Marines against Guy.

I was playing 3 other games at that time. I don't think it helped me in any of them.

I missed you shooting your own AI but you aren't doing too badly so far I don't think. You picked a reasonable collection of units. Abandoning your HQ might cost you 'cause you will run out of missiles very quickly but if you'd stayed I think I'd have wiped you out.

Shining1

I chose a somewhat bizarre collection of units and had problems with A.Is either doing stupid things or missing stationary targets at medium range. They aren't very good shots.

Funkodrom
21-03-2002, 09:55:35
Tell me about it. My only really good units against Rachel were my 4 exterminators and my missile tanks. AIs are pretty crap really that's what makes the mechs so lame I think.

Funkodrom
21-03-2002, 09:56:20
They are too slow and too innaccurate. Like Sand People.

Fistandantilus
21-03-2002, 10:07:12
I missed you shooting your own AI...

Oh, you missed a good show then...
I had issued orders to the AI to move away from the path of the missile and on test orders all went fine... unfortunately the AI behaviour was 'hold on sighting', well it spotted one of your stupid marines and stopped moving in the wrong place... kaboom.
The second missile I fired went... well I think it's orbiting around the planet now...

In short I hate that missile launcher, how is it possible that it can't hit a tree at medium distance?? That damn targeting system is broken or what??

Fortunately in the last turn the third one hit something, killed one of your units (I think a sniper??) and damaged other three, not bad. My AI is down to something like 3hp though :(.

Funkodrom
21-03-2002, 10:26:25
That targeting thing gets me as well sometimes.

If you hold down shift (or Ctrl, can't remember which) and aim at something it should give you an orange line. That means target the ground/scenery at that point. If you have a pink line it'll just fire through it. Still sometimes misses trees though. I had that problem against PosterBoy in the first turn of our league match. I was starting where you are and needed to get out. Wanted to grenade the trees but the grenades just flew straight through the forests.

Your missile hit? Damn. I thought you ran that launcher away. Mind you, it must be empty now. :D

Fistandantilus
21-03-2002, 10:54:58
I don't think I can possibly outrun your units with that missile launcher. I mean, that thing is as fast as a crippled turtle!

Besides I don't quite get what the difference between target position and target terrain is yet... (apart that issuing target terrain twice won't fire the second shot if the terrain has been destroyed by the first)

I think I'll have to reread the readme (again!)

Shining1
21-03-2002, 10:55:52
It depends how you use them and on what map. I annihilated most of Emperor Ming's units using a pair of A.Is - get them up close to anything and they are lethal.

But yeah, Sniper bait much of the time if you get a big wide open area of a map.

Shining1
21-03-2002, 10:59:12
Target Terrain fires DOWN. Target position fires straight ahead.

Suppose you want to use an A.I to clear sand bags on a map. You'd need to use target terrain (the orange line) to hit them. Or you want to land a missile in the middle of an open area. Target terrain with it.

If you just want to randomly fire somewhere, though, use target position.

I've got some AIs in the game against Matt in the factory. Should be interesting in close quarters.

PosterBoy

I'm playing a league match against Johno007 Rank 14!!!
Crossroads map and he has just set up base with two missile launchers with an HQ behind them to cover most of the open area.
I'm going to have to be sneaky with my marines to get do any worthwhile damage here methinks.

Funkodrom
21-03-2002, 12:12:36
There are lots of ways to sneak round the edges. Don't assault across the open area and keep moving.

If you can get round the back and take out his HQ his missile tanks will be useless very quickly.

PosterBoy
21-03-2002, 13:19:28
Most of my men are moving round the edges and taking out hunter etc.

I am using my lone grenadier to run into the open throw a grenade and run back to relative cover.

I know. I'm going to have to try and get a look at the bunker map before I play Shiny. He slaughtered me in the factory.

Rachel beat me in the X-roads. Damn mechs.

Getting hammered against PosterBoy 'cause my units can't shoot straight and I am too lazy to make them dodge properly..

Thought Fist's missile tank was out of missiles when it had one left killed 4 men with one shot. Whoops. If it had 2 left he'll have won that game.

No reply from Matt on that game thank god. I could be looking at 5 losses out of 5.

Game against guy hasn't really got started.

Guy
21-03-2002, 22:32:18
Actually, we ran into each other this turn. Literally. Half my guys died, I think, of sheer shock from running around a corner and ramming smack into your guys. One of my snipers traded places with one of your commanders without exchanging fire, which apparently confused my sniper so much, he couldn't return fire from your back up.

I think I'm going to lose pretty badly.

Funkodrom

Guy, it's 8-6 at the moment... I wouldn't be so pessemistic yet.. although god knows what all those grenades are blowing up up there. :)

I've sent my orders for turn 13 of the game vs Shining (twice) but didn't receive the next turn nor a orders received message from the server???
Shiny is literally cleaning my clock in that game. I started with a team heavy on AIs (3) but don't think that was a wise idea...

Mike, I got lucky with the missile tank in our game. Wiped out most of your units by itself... besides I'd love to play a rematch. Don't know if I'll be able to play any turns today though...

Damn, is this game addicting or what. I'll have to register soon.

Good game, Shining. If you'd like to slaughter me again send another challenge!

About AIs, well I wanted to try them in close spaces since in the wide open they seem to miss everything due to their slow reaction time...

Besides, I'm not sure they are worth 4 force points, sure they are tough but are often sitting ducks, the game I'm doing better with them is the one against Poster Boy where I've taken only 1 AI and it's acting as a medic repairing exterminators and hunters like nobody...

The patch is quite nice. That tutorial is great! I could have really used this before I started playing, let's me try stuff out and practice different things that have so far only gotten me killed in my matches against people.

I'm finding that playing a defensive game doesn't seem to work very well. You tend to get overrun rather than preserving any of your men. Of course, maybe I'm just doing it wrong.

I'm not sure what the current score is. It was 14-12 to you when I last saw but I'm not sure if I would have killed anything / lost anything in the next turn. Me fleeing the bunker and running half my men into your assault force at the beginning was exciting.
