Got this for my XBox today - lots of fun

Total adrenaline rush and hilarious mayhem. Good stuff.

I was thinking about getting the PS2 version.

One thing I was wondering, having not played either of the first two in the series: Are the levels all pre-determind set pieces and Ridge Racer/GT style pre-set track-within-a-city type circuits, or do you get to freely roam around causing carnage like in GTA or Driver?

Predetermined. But you do get rewarded with a nitro boost by driving on the wrong side of the road (into oncoming trucks and cars)

Great fun.....so damn fast.....still reeling

yeah as nils said it's kind of ridge racer type tracks

there are a few main types of event:

straight races - go round the course, try not to crash too much, and cross the finish line before your rivals. There can also be 1 on 1 and pure time trial versions of this.

takedown races - go round the course, doesn't really matter how far up the field you are but you win by causing a certain amount of your rivals to crash.

set piece smashes - start from a specific location, drive to a certain spot like a busy junction and cause an almighty crash. Success is based on how much money's worth of damage you cause. Special icons are dotted around that can increase your damage.

the last one is actually amazing fun, there's a real challenge to hitting the traffic at certain angles to cause the biggest pile up and try and bounce into the special icons and money multipliers.

That does sound fun.

yeah it's cool, after your initial crash you have a crash breaker figure to hit, say 8 more crashes, and once you hit that you can basically detonate your car, allowing you to combo even more pile-ups and try and bounce into extra crash icons, etc.

there's also loads of extra cars and stuff to unlock, as you would expect, like big rigs, fire trucks and stuff

i was doing a time trial using a forumla 1 type car yesterday. Drving through populated city streets with a boost enhanced F1 car, it was probably the most insane sense of speed i have experienced in a computer game

It's a really fun game. The Crash mode is awesome.

This is the best crashing game since Carmeggedon (and in fact the first PS2 game I've bought for almost 2 years!). Lots of fun.

There's another game coming out soon for the PC that has some awesome looking crashes in it too. Flatout I think it's called, it's a destruction derby type game.

I got this at the weekend too, and I've been playing it quite a lot. It really is fast, sometimes scarily so.

Tearing down a highway the wrong way on full boost, narrowly missing 6 cars in a row... fucking awesome. hitting a wall at 200+ mph. Ouch.

yeah it is extremely intense with the faster cars and the narrower streets

there's a couple of bits where it looks like you'll hit a wall and it turns out to be some barriers you can crash through - i shit myself with one of those last night

A lot of the Crash set-ups seem a bit easy to me. It seems like as long as you get the X4 multiplyer token you're pretty much guaranteed a gold medal regardless of how big your crash was (within reason obvoiusly). Those Heartbreaker tokens are a bit cunty though.

yeah, they do get a bit more difficult on the european and jp circuits but you're basically right, as long as you hit the multipliers you're laughing

i managed to cause a $1.4m one last night, that was fun

i've acheived a sort of zen mastery of the crash mode. just so long as you draw a beeline to the multiplier, you're golden.

is anyone having as hard of a trouble getting gold in the old-school hotrod preview lap as i am?

I think this is probably the best game I've ever played (Tony Hawks series excepted). I'm not as far through it as you guys, but I'm currently mincing around Paris in a little Porsche (just unlocked the Sports Series) and I really can't remember enjoying a game as much.

I haven't heard such a glowing review of a game in ages. There was me thinking driving games were dead.

Hmm. Don't suppose any of you guys want to buy me this game for christmas do you? :cute:

No, but it's only 30, you should just buy it. It's really really good.
