Not as much fun if you can't play as the Orks, but I might give this one a try.

Beta1

you will be able to in the full version (and the eldar and chaos) but the demo is marined only. Only problem is I cant install it - I seem have a problem with my C drive which I think is going to require a format and reinstall....

fixed the problem, and then found another and fixed that.

If when your installing the installer appears to crash even if the task manager says not responding just go and have a drink/whatch TV for 5 minutes. When you come back it will be working.

It would be cool to kick K_G's arse at 40K again and they've included the Farseer. My favourite.

how to mod the demo to enable you to play as the orks AND get the tier three units (terminators, landraiders, squiggoths etc)

Still no chaos or eldar in the demo, although you can mod them in they appear as pink boxes as theres no models for them in the demo folder...

I've just played through the tutorial on this and I'm very impressed with it.

It's great not to have to micromanage resource collection like in so many other RTS games.

The recommended system specifications are:

2.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 or equivalent
512 MB System RAM (required for 8-player multiplayer games)
nVidia GeForce 3 or ATI Radeon 8500 or equivalent with 64 MB of Video RAM

I meet the recommended processor, but I only have 256MB of RAM and only have an Radeon 7500 and it runs very smoothly on the default graphic settings. I'll try pumping them up soon and see how far I can push it before my graphics card starts having problems. The game looks good.

Funkodrom

Played it yesterday, was very good. Did the tutorial and half the first mission.

My computer is going to struggle though, already slows down in the battles. Incidently, this is probably also the cause of my Warcraft III struggles, as it slowed down the same way but couldn't have been a ping problem....

Very similar to WCIII in terms of building / layout / controls / heroes / the way the units respond when you click them etc.

Differences being you get your resources by capturing strategic points (kind of like Steel Soldiers but it takes longer to capture one) and your units are automatically created in squads, which is really cool.

Got this yesterday too.

Just played a little bit really but did a chaos vs eldar skirmish which was fun.

as far as i can tell you have to play through the main campaign as the space marines - i really wanted to play as chaos...i don't even know if there is a campaign for each race...

fp
25-09-2004, 08:36:29
Nope. There is only one campaign and you have to play as the Space Marines.

Interesting idea comment on wiki about the tau, the idea that amongst other things they were created to offer a more optimistic race philosophy than the other races, i.e. they want to unite the galaxy etc.

it's certainly true that particularly when it first came out, 40k was very pessimistic and gothic, the idea that the empire (and thus humanity) was teetering on the edge of destruction with only the the (failing) emperor's powers and armies keeping at bay the forces that wanted to destroy humanity

GW has always had that kind of dichotomy between creating these kinds of war-torn hellish settings, and yet also having a lot of fun and humorous elements to their games. obviously the 40k universe in particular was feeling a little heavy for their tastes.

The initial game seemed a bit interesting, but MP oreinted (and none of my freinds got into this), but with 7 races and a SP game, it would be worth picking up I think.

I've never heard of the Necron or Tau races before.

they're both fairly new to the warhammer universe. the tau have taken just about everything the eldar ought to be good at, and is good at that. painful vehicles, many strength ten weapons. a god damned fire warrior (which is the basic troop choice) has a S5 weapon. they make up for it by being atrocious in hand to hand combat. guardsmen could whoop the majority of t'au in the assault phase... thankfully, eldar are being redone this fall.

as for the necrons, they are a sort of space undead. they go between intervals of hibernation, to killing all living things, and then they go back to sleep until more sentient beings come about. lather, rinse, repeat. they've really only got one vehicle, the monolith, and from what i've seen is that it's going to be a 'unique' slot, much like the land raider and the guard's baneblade. apart from that they're as hard as marines, only moreso; necrons can stand back up after being wounded. only half the time, in theory, but i've seen nearly entire squads stand back up on some good rolling. granted, the ressurection orb could be tweaked, but necrons are a long way out for being revamped.

optimistic, possibly. it's often more a case of this:

Tau Etherial: "fight for the greater good."

Human: "but the law says that contact with aliens is a crime and will condemn my soul in the face of the emperor."

Etherial: "fight for the greater good, or die."

human: "well, when you put it that way..."

bottom line is that the tau appear to be all bright and shiny, but they're just as skewed as everyone else barring tyranids. who are just out for a midnight snack and missed the turn to the bodega.
