I was just listening to some old LWP (read 4 onwards for me)tracks and reading the old reviews. Not only was it laugh out loud funny but i think i would probably have a different (read better) opinion of many of the tracks. Anyway it was good fun and made me realise that LWP is a worthwhile endeavour.

So, that made me think it was time to think about LWP7 and some possible formats. My main feeling is that it has got a bit monolithic and this encourages the apathy element. I wonder if we might find a way to do it a bit quicker and get a better turnaround. That means one of three options: a) less submitters, b) less tracks, or c) both

I kind of like the idea of a 1 track each job. I reckon 10 submitters - 10 tracks - mosh & go

anyone else interested?

protein

Couldn't we upload MP3s to a shared hosting account this time? That way we could make it a more regular thing and creative with the themes.

Not sure how that would work exactly but we should exploit the technology if it's available. Seems a little silly that we're posting CDs all over the world to each other.

King_Ghidra@home
01-06-2004, 20:22:02
i think that's a fair point, but half of the problem is waiting for people to pull their finger out and submit their tracks/finish their reviews

the distribution itself is a small part of the whole time it takes

zmama
01-06-2004, 20:37:10
And then there is the whining about the quality of mp3s

protein
01-06-2004, 20:43:52
Hmm. It's just to get the idea of the track isn't it. If you love it then you'll go and buy a copy.

I reckon as soon as we have all the participants signed up then we could get the tracks uploaded in a week and the reviews written within another week. So it's a two week deadline from start to finish. All the reviews in at once and no messing. We could stagger the publication of the reviews though, just for the sake of debating/arguing afterwards.

Much.

I didn't participate in the last LWP because the original deadline was the end of November and there was no way I could make it. Six months + after that and the whole thing hasn't been reviewed yet...granted most of it has.

protein
01-06-2004, 21:37:24
That's why we should say either you can do it by the said deadline or you should wait for the next LWP. If we use a quicker system we can do them more often.

Dunno. Just a thought.

Lazarus and the Gimp

As KG pointed out- the distribution is not the problem. It's the reviews and compiling of the articles.

The delays over editing the articles can be avoided by posting the reviews in a thread, as we did with two batches for LWP6. Secondly, it's getting increasingly easy to predict who will submit reviews on time, and who won't. Will a change of format to MP3 make the tardy buggers less tardy? I'm sceptical.

I've got a shared family PC, a dial-up connection and no ripping software (I don't do MP3's). It would be difficult to find a slot to use up the phone line for the 5 hours or so it would take to download the 10 tracks (assuming a decent 5Mb per song MP3). If that rules me out of LWP from now on, then so be it. However I am one of the more reliable submitters/reviewers....

protein
01-06-2004, 23:10:26
Ditch the idea then. Your tracks are always wicked. I wonder if there's a smoother system somewhere along the line.

I never volunteer myself as a compiler because I know that through a combination of laziness and being busy I'd take forever.

Maybe a thread for each track could be the answer? Then tracks won't be overlooked and it won't be confusing. That would make the comments part run quicker.

I think people (I know I do) don't tend to do things unless there is a deadline looming. So I guess we could set tighter deadlines for the actual submitting of tracks bit. I don't know.

Funkodrom
02-06-2004, 08:25:24
Tight deadlines and no tolerance for lateness, if you are late you don't get in.

Lazarus and the Gimp
02-06-2004, 16:09:18
I think it's probably time I volunteered to compile and despatch one. My CD burner is a little moody, but with a spot of bullying I'm sure I can persuade it.

Morning!

If you want to be in the next LWP, do you want to send across a couple of tracks while the usual couple of weeks of quibbling goes on? Some sort of theme might emerge from it, but I'd go for inclusion rather than cohesion.

Let me know if you're interested and I'll send you my address.

The standard "two tracks, and don't be an arsehole" rule applies. If it turns out I can't fit them all on 2 CD's, the longest track gets dropped.

Deadline and submission details to follow. Feel free to burn tracks now if the mood takes you. The deadline will be the weekend I start burning discs- if your tracks aren't in by then, they won't be on them. I'm sure I'll be able to find worthy replacements.

Oh yes- I'm only accepting regular CD tracks on CD's. Don't try e-mailing me MP3's, please.

A new request for this LWP. Please PM me with the details of your track selections once they're made- band names, song names and brief comments about the tracks. I will not pass any info on. This measure is in place so that if you mysteriously vanish, we'll be able to piece together an article in your absence.

What's pseudo-medieval about "fortnight"? Is "weekend" considered to be reminiscent of wassails and roast boar too?

BigGameHunter
06-07-2004, 07:47:57
Hmmm...now that you mention it, no.
Don't take it as me taking the piss--it's quite the opposite. I love that you employ terminology that the US has dropped altogether.
As a lover of Shakespeare and English literature in general, I only wish we had the class here to retain some of the nicer, more formal touches you probably take for granted.
Anyone who loves English would probably be as horrified as I am that words like "quick" have morphed into "kwik" due to insane advertising campaigns. It's no wonder that US language skills are so abysmal and keep getting worse.

CD's received, BGH- many thanks.

What sort of weighting do you want on the tracks to be selected? There are a few tracks on there that I can guarantee will be liked by many, but may be well-known already (a couple are staple tracks of any club "Indie night". Do you want me steering clear of tracks that may be widely known and sticking to the "undiscovered treasures"?

BigGameHunter
06-07-2004, 21:14:33
I think the latter is the direction I was leaning in...and if we can avoid fueling the "emo" debate, all the better!
:)

I don't have the track list at work, so not sure which one you speak of, but it sounds like it comes from a clutch of songs off one particular compilation disk...if so, it may well be a band that does'nt even produce anymore...a few of those groups are defunct for one reason or another...two for rather tragic causes, actually. That's why it is "brutal".

BigGameHunter
06-07-2004, 21:20:45
Ah, ok...I had a list in my PM to you...yes, 14 is a great one...I worried it might be too poppy for the edgey crowd here...and to me, it is a great example of a band that the unwise might well try to lump into emo, but when you do a little digging, you realize they predate and spawned their lesser successors...which is why I love the debate, actually. The sound that came out of this region 10+ years ago has many elements of "emo" but still rocked...so I'm much more personally inclined to like that music in general.
Why don't you tell me your top four you might consider unknowns and we'll go from there? #14 is a definite.

Most of those on "Indian head" will be known by several participants, although tracks 1, 4, 7, 9 and 14 are pretty obscure. Of the others, a couple are tracks I consider to be great but I can guarantee they'll be slagged off in a distressing way. The Nick Drake and Belle and Sebastian ones being examples.

On "Brutal West", tracks 1 through to 5 will be widely known, as will track 8. Everything else is obscure.

If I was choosing, I'd pick either the tragic track 10 from "Brutal West", or one of the 5 tracks from the band that closes both CD's. Probably track 20 on "Brutal West".

I've been trying to spread the joy of that particular group wherever I go...some people aren't that enthused, but I swear they (he) is doing him modern impression of Sgt. Pepper meets Zeppelin or something.
I heard their last show in town sucked, so maybe they should be confined to the studio only...

I'll look those options over and let you know which I think is best...cheers.

Oh, you're distressing all right, pal. :)

Laz--I'd probably go for the previously mentioned #14 and then #20. While I feel the whole grip of songs from that particular band are good, #20 was the first one I heard that really made me sit up and pay attention. I don't see how anyone can really deny it is innovative and interestin (but I'm sure someone(s) will!).
For historical and human interest reasons, #10 appeals, but since they are obviously not putting out any more albums, the interest would be limited from a future release standpoint.
Let's save that for the LWP: Artists Who Died Too Soon edition.

Here's how the burn will work.

We have slightly fewer contestants than originally anticipated. Rather than send out two half-full CD's, I'm going to fill them. Some participants have kindly sent me extra tracks (thanks folks) and you can expect some of these to turn up on the LWP selection. I may bung on a bonus track or two of my own.

I'll pick tracks that appear to fit the overall mood, and these extra tracks will appear towards the end of the two CD's. If you feel this to be against the spirit of LWP then feel under no obligation to review them- consider them to be free gifts. Alternatively, I'm sure reviews of them will be appreciated by all concerned.

They'll start going out after the weekend- the overseas ones will go first.

First reaction is that it is, across the board, quite unusual, with a couple of real standout songs. A few on the first disc were a little challenging, to be sure...but I don't think I heard more than one or two I thought were poor, personally.
I'm looking forward to learning who these acts are and giving them a good thorough listen.
