I had a load of viri on my computer. I got rid of them and since then Zone Alarm would crash the computer on start up. I got rid of Zone Alarm and the problem went away. Then I downloaded a newer version and the problem started up again. It would crash and leave me unable to access the internet.

So I re-installed windows and tried the new zone alarm again and it's still happening. SO now I got rid of zone alarm again and I'm unprotected.

Are there any other good firewalls?

Sure this has been discussed before, but ZoneAlarm always worked for me.

You sure you've cleared all the virus stuff ? If a new install of ZoneAlarm crashes your PC then something is affecting it and may well affect others too.

I thinkn there must be some corrupt remenants of ZA somewhere on the PC. I've done a virus scan with the new Antivir.

I've installed Kerio and I'm having no problems at all.

Weird.

I'd like to get my hands on one of these scrotes that make computer viruses.

Win 98 is okay. Never had any problems with it.

Have you checked for (and cleaned out) spyware?

Computer keeps crashing every now and then. I have no idea why. No virus. New install of windows. New firewall.

Fucking headache.

Buy a new computer. Burn this one to excorsise the demons from it.

When you say that you "reinstalled Windows" do you mean you reformatted and then reinstalled or you just reinstalled it? Big difference.

The second one. I've got nothing to back up onto.

I did a scandisk and defrag last night and apart from a couple of occasions where the computer has turned itself off (I think due to incorrect modem configuration) it's been okay. FIngers crossed. No crashes for 10 minutes now.

HELP! STILL FUCKED! CAN ONLY GET ON THE INTERNET FOR A SHORT TIME BEFORE CRASH!

I can only get on the internet without the firewall running. Scared of viruses.

What do I do?

If I have the firewall on, when I click on either IE or OE I will get a blue screen and an invalid page fault then my computer will freeze. FUcking nightmare.

Protein...find someone that can help you get the data off your computer...either by bringing over their computer and using a crossover cable or hooking up a cd burner.

You need onsite help there, kiddo! Your computer needs to be reformatted very badly and things won't get better until you do.

Here's another firewall you can try. I haven't used it but you might as well try.

Cheers. :)

BTW I degragmnted my computer last night and suddenly I had 3 more gig free. I've not managed my computer very well.

My computer is working totally fine now apart from the firewall making it crash.

If the next firewall makes it crash too then I'm really stumped.

those grags take up a lot of space :p

My wife used to manage a couple of win98 computers - they were routinely left on - and would crash every couple of days, or more, depending on use. She had to format and reinstall everything about twice a year.

Installed zmama's firewall and now it doesn't crash when I click on stuff.

WAHOOO!!!

Everything looks okay now. *touch wood

You may have had some kind of registry problem with zonealarm after cleaning out your viruses. Its good you could avoid a total reinstall.

Windows 98, an OS with a built in crash timer. Smart move there, not that it would ever reach the end before crashing on some other ill-fated program error of it's own.
