If the laptop harddrive won't boot then there isn't much you can do as a non-nerd. Sorry. :(

Even if you were brave enough (and I don't recommend you do it!) to open up your laptop and remove the drive AND attach it to the PC , chances are the drive is fried. You need to get it to the repair shop as soon as possible.

And don't forget to back up your important data, again!!! (just a nerdmama nag ;) )

I would imagine you can slave a laptop harddrive, I just don't know the specifics of how you would.

Its just another hard drive...just a smaller form factor. It's the same as slaving any other ide drive.

Ie. looking up how the drive is jumpered

If it's still under warranty then you can probably get it fixed. If it's not, there's not much to lose (except the laptop) by opening it up and removing the hard drive. I'd get a repair if I could afford it though (in theory).

I figure though, that if he had to ask he's never dealt with such things...better to take it to the shop and see if they can get any of the data recovered

I figure though, that if he breaks it then it's not my fault, but if he fixes it then I've saved him the cost of the repair job.

Laptops are generally not meant to be messed with.

If its under warranty, see what you can arrange about having the unit checked to see if they can recover it. You might just have had a virus that eat your io.sys file. If that's the case, the rest of your data is recoverable off the harddrive. Just need to boot from CD, plug up an external storage source and get it online, and save out your data. But, if it's something unrecoverable (there are many such ways that can happen), then there's no hope.

The trick is to work out a deal with the service techs about this. Cause normally, what they are going to do is not even look... they'll flip on the power, see it doesn't boot, pop in a CD to boot from, reset, reboot, reformat, and reinstall. You end up with a new, clean HD that way.

If it isn't under warranty, then I'd suggest you find a shop that works with laptops so they can look to see if its worth trying to recover your HD/system. Depending on the age of your little box, it might just be cheaper to buy a new one then spend the money on labor to try and recover your data.

Always keep backups of important data. It's a pain, but it pays off when something like what you just experienced happens to you.

You are a house-wife?

Working screens in lap tops are worth a LOT of money to part dealers. Too bad you just wasted yours.
