Okay folks, here it is. Angband Challenge #12, character supplied by our previous winner Sir Penguin.

Character #12 is Volray, a Vampire Chaos Warrior, and will be delving the dungeons of ZAngband v2.4.0 (you'll need to download ZAngband 2.4.0 if you haven't already got a copy).

Here are the rules:

1. NO CHEATING. This game is basically being run on the honour system. No-one can stop you making save-reload backups, but it is not part of the rules. If you die at CLevel 49 one turn before killing Morgoth, you'll have to start from CLevel 1 again. (Not that you'd need to, since you're almost guaranteed to win )

2. You have two weeks to get as far as possible. It is possible to win the game during this time period Due date will be 2002-MAR-18 2200 GMT(that's 10PM, folks).

3. There are some options you are not allowed to change. Below I will list the ones that are forbidden for you to change during the challenge.

3 - Auto-scum for good levels
3 - Generate dungeons with aligned rooms
3 - Generate dungeons with connected stairs
3 - Monsters chase current location (v. slow)
3 - Monsters chase recent locations (v. slow)
3 - Monsters learn from their mistakes
3 - Monsters exploit players weaknesses
5 - Allow unusually small dungeon levels
5 - Always create unusually small dungeon levels
5 - Allow empty 'arena' levels
5 - Monsters behave stupidly
Any of the "Cheat Options"

The others you may change according to your preferences. Keep in mind that this is only the list for ZAngband 2.4.0. Other variants will have other options, and will have their own taboo list.

Remember, when changing options then saving the character to the disk and making a backup to start with should your character meet an untimely end, you cannot play any turns between changing options then saving the character.

If you dispute any of the rules or option changes, post your objection, and we can all debate whether or not the rule should stand. Any suggestions for further rules will be welcomed.

Last but not least, here's the link again.

Angband Challenge Page (http://www.geocities.com/qaj_stars/chal.html)

Good luck, and happy adventuring.

About the autoscum - doesn't it come with its own set of drawbacks - in return for cooler treasure, there's an equal likelihood of meaner out-of-depth monsters?

I play both ways, depending on my mood when I start a character, but I don't see one as being better(edit: EASIER) than the other.

I'm not complaining, just, uh, hmm. :nervous:

Qaj the Fuzzy Love Worm
04-03-2002, 23:22:11
Yes, there's risk, which is why it's not optional. It's the characters "parent" who decides what risk the character will take. Just like turning off intelligent monsters makes the game safer, though there's no loss of reward there.

Auto-haggle, on the other hand, doesn't make the game harder or easier, just more tedious and more rewarding, vs. quicker and a little less rewarding.

Pretty much, anything that could affect game play difficultly is taboo, as modification to make the game easier is unfair and against the spirit of the original generator's wishes.

If you win this one, MDA, feel free to switch it off or on as you like (except once it's set, it's set :D )

Chaotic Warrior Vampire!!!

Aaarrgh! This won't be easy. :smoke:

Sir Penguin

Just to put people on even footing:

1. Vampires at level 2 can 'U'se their special power of sucking blood out of living creatures to increase their food total (and HP, I think). It also really freaks out townspeople :).

2. Chaos Warriors have a patron deity who will either do something good (give you an excellent weapon or a good mutation), bad (summon monsters around you (debatable as to whether this is bad or not :)), or give you a stat drop), or ignore you. He might also polymorph you (turn you into a cyclops or something). The randomness of this almost made me not choose a Chaos Warrior for the competition, but the (magic use) + (fighting ability) + (fun stuff you'll find nowhere outside of a chaos storm) was too much to resist. So don't feel too bad if you have to restart, it's not hard to get up to level 10-12 before even entering the dungeon.

3. Zangband 2.4.0 has 4 towns, each containing the 9 basic buildings (the 8 from Angband + a book store). The three that you don't start in also have extra buildings, like fighters halls, libraries, castles, casinos, etc. Some of these extra buildings will give you set quests, which will appear as yellow down stair characters somewhere in the town's 'M'ap.

It's a pretty easy character, if you're lucky and you don't take chances with the above-ground uniques, set quests, and extreme parts of the water :).

And you can download the Windows install file for Zangband 2.4.0 from:

ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/games/Angban...and-240-win.exe

Or the same filename from any of the other mirrors listed on www.zangband.org.

I've been toying around with it to get used to it. I've found Zangband to be a bit harder than Angband. Even the 1st level of the dungeon has the occasional killer monsters in it. Haven't been above level 6 yet. :(

I haven't tried the Chaos Warrior yet, but the Vampire's light restrictions are annoying. Can't eat any garlic bread either. :(

Sir Penguin
05-03-2002, 06:18:52
There's a really, really easy way around the light restriction at the beginning, but I'm not going to tell you what it is :).

Here's another hint for the Vampire character: the CTRL-T combination will tell you the time of day in the game. If it's between 18:00 and 06:00, it will be dark outside on the surface.

Just for an example of what I was saying about something or other, this is the cream of what I've found/been given so far (Level 9, max recall of 150'):

b) a Robe of Permanence [2,+10]
c) Soft Leather Armour of Elvenkind [4,+10] (+2 to stealth)
d) a Cloak of Stealth [1,+3] (+3 to stealth)
e) The Dagger 'Nimthanc' (1d4) (+4,+6) {@v1=g!k!d}
f) The Quarterstaff 'Nar-i-vagil' (1d9) (+10,+20) (+3)

Plus a Vampiric and a Trump weapon, which I've sold.

Actually, I just wanted to show off.

I found the phial of Galadriel on first dungeon level! What use is that to me as a Vampire?!!! Then my god turned me into a half-orc, so I quit since it was still early in the game. :o

Qaj the Fuzzy Love Worm
05-03-2002, 17:54:10
I was hoping you'd roll up a slightly easier character for the second round of the new Challenge contest, SP. But, I'll grant that it _is_ a challenge :)

Sir Penguin
05-03-2002, 18:16:25
DaShi: Ouch! You have an RNG with a sense of humour, it seems :). You can still use the Phial as a Vampire, I think (although I may think that because I always have light resist by the time I find it).

I got up to level 18 last night. My deity gave me a 1 point hit to all my stats during one levelup (and gave me 1 point + to INT during another). He also mutated me so that I have random hallucinogenic episodes :). Fortunately, it's only happened once so far, in the Outpost so I could just cower by a building until it passed.

SP--still doesn't think that a VCW is that hard to play!

You know, Zangband is seriously wrong in stating that the Master of Magic magic system is based on Richard G's Magic : The Gathering (of your money). MoM came out in the early to mid 80s. Back along with Master of Orion (1) and Civ. M:tG was released in 94. You could argue (although not well) that M:tG magic is based on MoM magic, but not the other way around.

It would be nice if people that are too young to know these things would at least check into them.

Sir Penguin
06-03-2002, 03:05:38
Sorry, DaShi, my ego got the better of me; you're right that you need light resist to use the Phial.

SP--has light radius 4 from the Phial and his quarterstaff

Sir Penguin
07-03-2002, 05:05:51
But you can use the Incandescent Light of Edison without light resist :).

Does anybody know where I can cure mutations in Zangband? I remember distincly there being something somewhere (but that might have been in a different version). My ever-so-generous deity just mutated me to be moronic (-4 INT/WIS)

The Rise and Fall of Micro$oft quest is so cool .

The gods must be crazy. I've gone through so many characters, I can't remember anymore. Actually, most of them died by monsters and my own carelessness. Though my god did kill one when I reached level 2. :(

Currently, my character now gains charisma every level. I'm at about 18/16 right now. Unfortunately, he took away a point of constitution as well. :( But he gave me a nice Hammer of extra attacks (+5, +4) +2 to hits. :)

Got killed by paralysis :(. I had some boots of free action, but I had switched them for the ones above after I'd got Edison's light. Edison's light gives me a fiery and electric aura, which does a bit of damage each time an enemy hits me. It saved me once, when I was fighting that mold that does paralysis, but this time there were just too many other bad guys.

Lv22 and alive - getting a +13,+6 pattern weapon (+1 str/con) early from my patron helped tremendously - I haven't had a single mutation, but keep getting "use my gift wisely, mortal" instead. I was really stoked about the +3,+5 dagger I was given more recently
I'm doing well enough to expect to be struck dead soon.

Edit: Since I'm going to my Irish brother in-law's place in Pittsburgh to drink beer all weekend, I won't be able to play Zangband. The sacrifices I make for family :)

My god has been ignoring me a lot lately as well. Actually, I'm grateful after what he did to my other characters.

I like the 'Trump' weapons a bit better than 'Pattern'. Mine allows me to teleport, which has been very useful when I've been confused and surrounded by monsters. The only drawback is if it becomes cursed. Then it is like the cursed ring of teleportation.

Played Volray again last night, bringing my CLevel 9 character up to CLevel 13, whereupon my deity chose to give me a "Die, mortal!" reward. Joy. Blasted my armour, blasted my +3 attacks Dagger (+7, +6) (which gave me 5 attacks total, very nice, but not great, and left me with 2HP, surrounded me with wood spiders, and left me to face the 250'-depth Warg packs I was handling easily when I was CLevel 12. Needless to say, I didn't last a single round.

Bah.

I found this particular chaos-warrior to be one of the easiest I've played. Still not as easy as a dwarf/mindflayer psicrafter, but pretty easy. The Psicraft class shouldn't be easy to play, but it is for me - probably amount of time served playing that class. Practice makes perfect.

Goodbye, Volray!

Here's my final entry. I made the mistake of thinking a CLevel 18 chaos warrior could take the Orc Camp quest. Of course, I hadn't noticed Pyaray had given me a handy -3 to stealth at some stage during the game, and I ended up waking all the orcs, and not being able to get into one of the handy corners to face one enemy at a time. That and the lethal absence of any healing or escape magic at all

Still, it was my fault. And maybe, just maybe, in the scant few hours I have left I'll be able to best that score. But I doubt it -chaos warriors aren't fun to start with, since they're average warriors and even more average spell casters with few useful offensive spells to begin with. The only thing they have going in their favour is the chance to get some nice weapons as rewards from their deity - but then, that's cancelled out by the ability of said deity to blast your equipment...

This is Qaj again.

Four hours to go at time of this post, and we have the current standings thusly (based on players of the last round who have posted here, or newcomers who have posted participation messages):

1. Sir Penguin, CLevel 30 (dead)
2. MDA, Clevel 26 (alive)
3. Qaj, CLevel 18 (dead)
4. Darkstar, no score
4. DaShi, no score

You have four hours to change the above by posting a better CD. No entries after 10PM GMT will be accepted. If this is the final standing, Sir Penguin will be declared the winner (again :) ), and MDA, as runner-up, will be required to submit a new character by next Monday GMT (though preferably Sunday).

I think I"m late. I overslept this morning and couldn't get online until now.

Here's my best since yesterday anyway.

How do you get the CD to come out so neatly?

Darkstar didn't enter this one. I had things I needed to do... but I might enter the next one.

Darkstar, noted.

DaShi, you are indeed a little too late. I'll include your score on the leaderboard, but it won't count. And the sad part is, based on depth, CLevel, equipment, stats. the fact your character was still alive etc., you would have won :)

And let this be a lesson to the rest of you! No, not the late reply thing (but I am ruthless with that, you're given 2 weeks - take a leaf out of MDAs book, and post early if you think you're not going to make it! A Partial/lower score is better than a late high score!), but the fact that a superior lower CLevel character can out you from the top spot! Looking at the characters in question, it's clear that, given similar conservative play styles, DaShi's character had the better change to off the Serpent.

Final standings are:

DaShi, CLevel 29 (alive)* **
Sir Penguin, CLevel 30 (dead)
MDA, CLevel 26 (alive)
Qaj, CLevel 18 (dead)
Non-participants from previous rounds:
Darkstar, no score
GregW, no score

*Disqualified due to late entry
**Position based on non-CLevel factors (see character dump)

The winner is declared to be Sir Penguin. As the originator of the Challenge #12 character, SP is unable to create the character for Challenge #13. Instead, the honors go to the runner-up, MDA.

Challenge #13 has a tentative start date of Wednesday 2002-MAR-27. The exact time of day is unknown at this time.

MDA, please email the new character to bogusspam_ac@ausi.com (remove the spam but not the underscore) for inclusion in the Challenge a day or two before the deadline. Thanks :D

As always, thanks for playing, and look forward to competing against you in the next Challenge :) :)

(Leaderboard will be posted in a new thread sometime today, US PacStdTime)

Where did you get Power Dragon Scale Mail? Sweet. What's its activation again?

DaShi

Qaj, that's ok. It's my fault for not getting there in time.

When I first started playing I used to jump right down the dungeon levels and get killed pretty quickly. Now I usually keep my clevels at about twice the dungeon level that I'm on. At least, until it gets horribly slow to level up on the lower dungeons levels. Then I went to a difference of 10 between the level types. That got slow as well, so I planned a difference of about 5 by clevel 30.

The Power Dragon Scale Mail must have been my reward for selling off my Armor of resistence when I thought I had better armor. I thought No Magic meant magic immunity. :clueless: I then sold that armor for some better armor at the black market. I found the dragon mail aroud level 20 or so on a level that I was planning on leaving because it had a bad feeling. But I wanted to see what that funny looking armor was before I left. It activates for elemental breath.
