The search engine's not 3-D, but it searches for 3-D objects. It takes a sketch of an object as input, and searches a data set for similar objects.

I didn't read most of the article, because it's really long. But it looked neat. I can't think of many practical applications outside of engineering. Maybe it could be used for identifying people in photos?

What happened to the search engine which you hummed into, and searched for the name, artist or sound file of your humming? That looked cool.

Most people couldn't hum worth squat. So noone could ever find the song they were looking for.
