tell whether a USB port is not functioning as opposed to the plug-in not working?

zmama
06-04-2004, 18:09:09
Two ways...try a different usb device in the port

And
MyComputer-->system information---->hardware--->device manager--->Universal serial bus controllers. If there is a yellow ! ya got a problem with the controller

Lurker

I only own one USB device, so the first way is out. (BTW, even though I grew up in WV, I still could have figured that method out. Jeez.)

I'll check it out the other way when I get home. Thanks.

Ah hem...before you go *Jeez* at me are you sure you only have one usb device? Mice come with usb connectors now, as do printers and scanners, and sometimes speakers and keyboards. You may have a usb capable device you don't know about Mr. WV. :p

Mr. WV, maybe you have a friend with a computer?

A friend? hahahahaha

Lurker's second post is classic :D (http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/urltrurl?lp=de_en&url=http%3A%2F%2Fbabelfish.altavista.com%2Fbabelfi sh%2Furltrurl%3Flp%3Den_de%26url%3Dhttp%253A%252F% 252Fwww.counterglow.com%252Fforum%252Fshowthread.p hp%253Fs%253Db9ac25c303376a5113ebe3920d969d6c%2526 threadid%253D19900)

In the annoying event that it fails, just run this page through the link in the "wacky german" counterpoint thread.

Two possibilities... Attempt another usb device in the gate

And
MyComputer -- > system information >hardware >device manager >Universal series bus control desks. If it gives a yellow! ya a problem with the control desk received

I possess only a USB device, therefore is the first way out. (BTW, although I could have represented this method still out in WV buildup, I. Jeez.)

I examine it from the other way, if I receive head. Thanks.

..., before you go * to Jeez * at me, you are safe of ampere-hour edge you have only one usb device? Mice come with usb plugs now, like printers and scanners, and sometimes loudspeakers and keyboards. They can have one usb capable device, which you do not know over Mr. WV.

Post of the lurker second is classical

So goes my life story....

Anyway, I couldn't figure anything out from the device manager. All the USB drivers were reported as functional, but I can't figure out how to make this headset/mic I bought work. The little green light won't go on when I plug it in, dammit!

zmama
07-04-2004, 20:08:36
Try it at a "friend's" computer? Or at work? Was there software that came with the headset?

And it doesn't matter, but I'm curious, what headset did you buy?

Lurker
07-04-2004, 20:37:43
Logitech USB 300. No software. Supposedly XP should have the drivers, no?

Chris
07-04-2004, 20:47:57
Stick your tougne in the Port, you will know whether its active or not.

Darkstar
08-04-2004, 04:12:10
A lot of the headset/mics don't just plug and play.

Is it that you don't have audio out, or don't have sound in?

Lurker
08-04-2004, 14:51:43
Neither. I presume it's also possible I need to do something configuration-wise with the application (Teamspeak). The app works and I get audio through the speakers, but I need to divert it to the headphones.

zmama
08-04-2004, 15:12:47
Have you gone to the Logitec site and downloaded new drivers? I'd try that first.

Lurker
08-04-2004, 15:31:03
Their troubleshoot faq says XP has the drivers.

If you plug in something to a USB port, is it supposed to recognize "new hardware"? It never seemed to do that.

zmama
08-04-2004, 15:55:16
Supposed to yes...

I went to a news group where someone had that prob and they were told to download new drivers. *shrug* No subsequent post to say whether it worked or not...

You really should try the headset on a different machine...maybe it isn't a working one and it should be sent back

Gary
08-04-2004, 16:01:59
Get yourself a USB ADLS modem (they come free from BT when you order the Broadband :)) and see if you can still post here. If you can, then both the plug & play and USB port is fine, and the problems with the mic/headphones/software. Alternatively, if you can't, then we all benefit :D

Otherwise take your PC to PC World and tell them you're having trouble with your porn and could they search your hard disk for you.

I removed my mouse and plugged in a cordless trackball the other night, and it wasn't recognised until I rebooted. So much for instant recognition, luckily I recalled the hot keys to close everything down.

Lurker
08-04-2004, 16:10:37
Good point about the reboot. I don't think the machine has been off or rebooted since I bought the headphones, so I'll try that. I'll also check the driver thing if that doesn't work.

*still wondering what the hell possessed Gary to run that post through babelfish in the first place*

Well, that really doesn't make much sense to me. I've installed a lot of hardware without having to reboot. Jeez. ;)

zmama
09-04-2004, 14:59:43
It's the second thing you do, after first checking to see if it's plugged in. I even have zpapa trained to do that... and he's OLD!

Still didn't work, though.

If it is reported as fine, that generally just means the driver is found and the chipset says there is a port.

Are the USB devices compatible? Your not running 1.1 on hardware that requires 2.0? Also if it is a front header (since headphones are mentioned), you should have a rear one, try it. If it works either the channel is dead, the connector dead, or it just isn't hooked up (which wouldn't surprise me) and is a showpiece due to laziness.

Lurker
10-04-2004, 13:03:56
Not being hooked up is a possibility, since I built the machine and I'm the poster boy for laziness and stupidity.

zmama: maybe if they had those at Best Buy when I went there, I would have bought them. :p

zmama
10-04-2004, 13:18:10
Best Buy doesn't carry Sennheiser...I know, I looked when my last pair broke. :( Made a special trip to the big city and everything!

Thing is...they don't plug into the usb port...the headset plugs directly into the sound card. And the microphone and headphones are of much higher quality than Logitech. For about the same price.

So there! :D

Lurker
26-04-2004, 12:17:52
Ha! I was right after all. It was indeed my own stupidity. Turns out I had two of the wires crossed connecting the port to the MB.

I'm now resolved to solve a different problem, which I'll have to get back to you on.
