My Unreal Tournament 2004 arrived this morning :bounce:

Should be fun, the big change in this version, for those that don't know, is the inclusion of vehicles. There's even some little space fighters you can use on some levels.

Anyone else thinking of purchasing?

Hmmm, if it reads DVDs that means it's probably a DVD drive, not a CD drive.

my cd writer doesn't

that's all that matters

I was mocking you, as is my way. Lurker, well, I just can't explain him.

His defensiveness makes it all worthwhile.

I'm going to do a proper review of this for CG. Expect to see it at the beginning of next week or never, one of the two.

I married a gamer. Bliss.

I haven't played any of the Unreal games.
What makes them stand out?

Shining1

GUNS!

Or in this case, GUNS and VEHICLES WITH GUNS!

Okay, that's a total lie. What makes the Unreal Tournament games stand out is the A.I of the bots. Unlike the Quake games, the Unreal bot A.I was fun, lifelike, and actually made playing single player/large multiplayer with 2-3 people a real blast.

Their behaviour actually changes as the A.I goes up - they get smarter and their aim improves. Low level bots will actually physically miss you with shots in a random way that mimics a poorly skilled human. From what I've seen of the demo of UT04, this even extends to vehicles. Quality bots will dogfight and dodge missiles in the jet, while basic smacktard bots will steal the jeep and drive it aimlessly around the map until they get it stuck (yes, I have literally seen this.)

MDA: SOOOO true about the Bliss part:).

Hmm, vehicles. I can't remember playing an FPS with vehicles that weren't "on rails, but I'm way behind on the new games.

Smart and multiple skill level (wow!) AI is good, since the only multiplayer I've ever done was one game of Red Alert and some Diablo 2.

Although I'll have my first ever DSL connection in May. :) Of course, everyone will have moved on by then.

Sounds like it might be worth a try though, thanks Shiny.

Try BF 1942. The vehicles there definately aren't on rails. :)

Vehicles have been in FPS games since Tribes. That was a while ago, at least before 2000.

Amazing how a Ph.D seems to timewarp people...:).

MDA

Its not amazing, its sad. It warps more than time, too. How do you think I ended up this way?

Half life - vehicles on rails
Medal of Honor (some expansion) had a tank or armored car with scripted movement while you manned the guns, IIRC.

Can't think of any others right now.

Shining1

Yeah I think Tribes was 99. It featured servers that supported 64+ players at once, as well as vehicles.

Vehicles add a massive amount to the cooperative aspect of a game. They also give players the chance to specialise somewhat, which means that even rank noobs can give value to the team by learning to be a driver or gunner or the like.

Of course, they also create whole new kinds of smacktards to deal with. Battlefield became infamous for virtual whole teams of players just camping the respawn for the plane, and team killing when they didn't get it.

And I know what you mean - I have one post-doc friend who is still kinda in recovery:).

Bought it, installed it, played offline for about a day, got tired of losing to bots all the time.

Been playing online Onslaught maps since, it's fantastic!!

'losing to bots all the time'?

*points at Shining1* Ha ha!

yeah Onslaught and Assault are probably the best game modes

i haven't tried that Mutant mode yet but that looked like a good concept

Shining1

The bots were skilled. I am not skilled.

I seem to do better under 250 ping conditions against humons who lurch and jump around like a kangaroo on acid. That and I actually know how to play a strategy game like Onslaught, which counts for a lot. The lag makes the rocket launcher almost compulsory, as well as anticipating where people are going to land in a couple of seconds. That or just those praise the lord moments when you sneak up on someone who's shooting at someone else and can hit them directly:).

I still seem to end up driving the tank into heavy fire too often, though. Which leads to my all time best kill, in fact. I grabbed the Scorpion on Dria, drove almost on to one of those natural bridges, rolled off the side halfway along, and fell straight down on top of a guy who was running past!

If anyone else can think of a more creative way to kill someone with a vehicle, I want to know!

(Actually, I'm finding the Hell Bender a much better way to kill infantry than the scorpion. It's slower but more responsive, and bigger, so you can run them down more easily.)
