View Full Version : Why do red x's happen?

I've tried to link some pictures from Webshots.com on another site...sometimes there are red x's where there should be pictures, sometimes not...it seems to be random.
Why do red x's happen and what can be done to prevent them?

Excersize and eat right.

A few possibilites:

The website doesn't allow remote linking. Meaning that you cannot display the image on other servers while linking back to their site.
There has been a bandwidth limit reached through that server.
Magical monkeys re-enacting the Civil War accidentally shot the server.

Hmmm...what's weird is I'll have three pics linked to in one post and two will work. Then I'll check another time and none will or one will...seems to be no rhyme or reason to it????

Probably because the image is already stored in your cache when you first check it, so it doesn't need to reload the image. But once your cache clears the truth comes out that remote linking doesn't always work and you will see the red x's.

Damn! I was using Webshots.com and didn't see anything about not being able to link.

you got the url wrong

also the the server might be slow or down, meaning that the picture cannot be loaded.

Which server is screwing up, the one I'm linking from or to?
It's sort of an embarrassment...I've made some Darkstaresque posts re some militaria and then "poof" no pics!
Or occasional pics...yargh...

It could be either server. The solution is to get a more reliable place to store your photos. I can host a few on my uni webspace temporarily if you like.

or reduce them to under 25k and upload them here.
