The academy is stupid. ELEVEN fuckers for RotK? It deserved the make-up award but that's it.

Even stupider was that Sean Penn won for Mystic River. Robbins deserved it for supporting actor and Penn was not as godawful as the script or plot to that movie, but it wasn't the best performance of the year.

It's a sweep ladies and gentlemen!

Loving it. :D

What's that saying about winning oscars for what you've done before not what you did this time?

The LotR trilogy is one of those I think. Reward for the sheer scale of the whole thing.

Yup. Successful epic series = more big budget movies = lots of employment for academy members.

And I do think they are really good.

The Oscars have always been a joke
I still remember Braveheart, a distinctively average B-flick, sweeping everything...

There is something conforting about the trilogy winning it though : it was made almost 100% down under, away from Schmollywood big studios' big claws

Loved Braveheart, loved Return of the King... weird, but the academy actually seems to be thinking of me these days:).

I'm positively delighted that few important awards went to those psychotic dramas. There's only so many times you can watch actors screaming at each other before you say fuck it. Hell, Johnny Dep was robbed!

Hell, I'm delighted about that too. It was ridiculous how many of the clips showing off the "best" actors consisted of random emotional shouting. It's come to the stage where emotional depth is a tiresome platitude.

Give me literary/symbolic depth any day.

subtelty will never be rewarded, shame for Bill Murray's brilliant play - he was by far my favorite

01-03-2004, 15:29:24
Yes. Did you see his face when they announced Sean Penn as the winner? He didn't look happy at all.

01-03-2004, 16:23:00
Well, it's not like he's going to have too many shots at the Oscar.
I thought the show was well done, and, in regard to LOTRROTK, the cast made a good point that there should be an ensemble award...could have taken care of Mystic River and/or LOTR and still given Murray an award he seemed to deserve.

01-03-2004, 16:32:05
It's widely regarded that BM should have won the best actor award for both Groundhog Day and Rushmore. I had a hunch that this year might have been his year, but alas, I was wrong.

This time yesterday you could apparently still get odds of 50/1 on LOTR winning all 11 of it's nominations. 20 on that would have been nice.

I wasn't coherent enough to form an opinion about the best actor award last night. It certainly wasn't Sean Penn in that screaming baby role though. Based on Mike's lifetime achievement comment, though, it should have been Bill Murray.

Clearly he needs to be more of an asshole and get thrown out of more places.

02-03-2004, 12:39:41
He's famously a complete asshole. He was hated on the set of Charlie's Angels apparently.

02-03-2004, 12:52:05
Surprising, as he comes across as a guy who'd only be an asshole with people who actually deserved it. Oh wait, he was on a film set...

03-03-2004, 01:49:30
So he's an invisible asshole?:)

03-03-2004, 02:05:38
Bill Murray's a giant asshole. But he still should have won.

I believe that I saw in the LA Times this week that the second release of the RotK DVD this fall will include 60 additional minutes of cut scenes. That will be one long movie. :clueless:

30-05-2004, 06:38:24
Didn't both the Extended versions of the earlier movies include about an hour of extra scenes too?

01-06-2004, 16:33:23
Yeah they did. I heard the second DVD was going to be getting on for 5 hours.

02-06-2004, 05:04:17
I fisrt I thought that it was getting it on for 5 horus

02-06-2004, 08:45:43
You thought it was getting it on with who for 5 hours?

02-06-2004, 11:12:50
With Horus, perhaps?

02-06-2004, 11:43:18
Ah. So he's telling Horus he thought he was getting it on for 5.
