View Full Version : Counterglow Game of the Year 2003

01-01-2004, 04:40:59
I can't remember what the format was last year, but it involved some kind of a voting system to determine what people thought was the best game. A similar idea might be good here.

It was a really slow year for games, though. Perhaps a single vote per platform might be a good idea.

PC: Knights of the Old Republic.
GameCube: Soul Calibre II

Yeah, KotOR gets my vote too.

Though I should vote for MTW just to piss Venom off.

Yeah very slow.

I should vote for Africa Korps but it turned up so late in the year I havnt really got to grips with it. But then most of the stuff I have been playing this year came out last year.

So I vote for Tron2.0 as its probably the most distinctive game I played this year

PC: Tron2.0

I only bought two games this year, so it's going to Tony Hawks Underground, slightly beating off the challenge of Pro Evo soccer 3.

I very much like Knights of the Old Republic.

KotOR gets my votes for both PC and console. :)

02-01-2004, 05:37:57
ffxi gets my vote!

02-01-2004, 06:11:41
I haven't played KOTOR, but I'll vote for it. Is it me or has this year been a bit crap for games?

02-01-2004, 07:07:45
I can't believe so many of you failed to make a joke about Funko saying that Tony Hawks beat off a load of footballers.

Even Venom made a post without being rude, threatening or funny in any way.

Weird thread.

based upon how much it was played

I would say Soul Caliber 2 for the Playstation 2

I've only played KotOR for a few hours, and it gets my vote.

Afrika Korps is still in the mail. Won't touch Deus Ex 2 until probably February, its sitting on my wife's desk, though.

02-01-2004, 15:45:46
For PC.

02-01-2004, 17:48:27
I have no new PC games....looks like KOTOR if my system can handle it...just had it in my grubby hands last week but put it back on the shelf for fear of instant addiction/performance woes.

And PS2: No new games, but Medal of Honor and GTAIII got lots of play until I hated on them. Bought War of the Monsters, which is ok but I haven't mastered it enough to really enjoy it and I just bought a discounted Baldur's Gate II which is really mindless fun.

What's the PC or console game that's most like the D&D world and doesn't require me to join a server to play? Single Player format...

02-01-2004, 20:10:03
Zookeeper from Snappy's regular Free Game of the Week feature.

I reckon I've played it pretty much everyday for the last few months.

Hard to beat the Baldur's Gate games there.

02-01-2004, 21:30:08
I wish it had a bit more story to it though...it kind of becomes a big exercise in inventory and level upgrading. Maybe an NPC or two on my side to make it interesting, or your own town/castle like in HOMM (oooh...I should reload that one...that was a fun game and I never finished it).

Or Icewind Dale I/II if you're in for a more mindless combat fest.

If you're not stuck on DnD, and want a very "free" (as in able to do what you want without being tied to the plot) game, try Morrowind plus expansions.

Oh, and Baldur's Gate II for the PC allows a party of up to 6, and they have personalities, which is cool. You can even get into NPCs pants if you want.

02-01-2004, 21:39:03
Yep, I had my own castle and Viconia after only a day or so's play:).

02-01-2004, 23:45:48
Huh? How come the PS2 version sucks so bad then!!!!

03-01-2004, 00:28:51
If you're talking about Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance (or something), that's not the same game.

03-01-2004, 01:50:42
You're right...I have Dark Alliance...#2 should be out soon I think.
But I'm unaware of the rest of the BG line.
I may well get Morrowind soon (Gold?).

03-01-2004, 03:02:53
Morrowind is kinda brilliant and kinda really bad. The story is intriguing and the environment is wonderful. But the combat is pretty poor and there is so much running around getting lost.

03-01-2004, 03:03:44
Baldur's Gate 2 for PC is quite probably the best roleplaying game ever made.

03-01-2004, 03:19:48
Excellent, it's the only one I've ever played.

Temple of Elemental Evil is pretty good as a single player game. It uses the D&D 3.5 ruleset. It's not really well coded (there are some horrible lags when saving and when moving the map), and a lot of bugs (characters marked asleep when they're not, for example), but there's nothing showstopping wrong with it on my system. I'm not sure if there's an official patch out yet, but there's a fan-made one. It has no storyline, and was crippled by censorship and time constraints (the fan-made patch opens up a brothel area that was removed from the original release). It's just a fun dungeon crawl, and a good exercise for D&D3 players.

dark alliance two is on the back burner for now: legal probs.

Hmm, it's very excellent but I think the first one is better.

For a D&D game Temple of Elemental Evil is the only game to truely use all the rules exactly. I liked it even with all the bugs. There is an official patch out now and apparently between that and the unofficial patch most everything is fixed. The new Neverwinter Nights game is supposed to be very well done. THe first one was fairly dull though.

For games of the year,

I would say Knights of the Old Republic, what else can you say about a game that reminded millions of people that Star wars used to be and can again be a good thing? Really well done and the differences in the game when you play a different style are surprising. I played it all the way through 3 times. Once pure good, once pure evil, then a third time just doing whatever I felt like. Each time the experiance after the initial world was very different.

Prince of Persia:Sands of Time. Amazing game. Nothing I can say bad about it at all. Looks great, plays great, nice story, engrossing mix of gameplay and character interactions, the list goes on and on. The only "bad" thing was in the beginning I had problems telling when I was in control and should start doing something and when the game was doing a movie, got used to it fairly quickly. Excellent game.

For buggest dissapointements/worst games

SWG for releasing long before they should have. I played in beta and we all knew what was going to happen. On the plus side the game is now shaping up to be what it was always intended to be.

FFXI for the huge list of reasons I have posted in another thread. A major dissapointment by the Final Fantasy team.

03-01-2004, 11:58:56
yes, let's make a french game coded by french canadians the best game of the year!

03-01-2004, 17:19:48
What's that, Snail & Cheese Tycoon?

03-01-2004, 22:12:51
There are no French people in StarWars.

Very excellent, as opposed to just plain excellent?

I've been looking in our local EB store for BG I on the cheap, but it doesn't get cheap enough - i've seen it for $15. I'd love to find the Dollar Bins some of you keep talking about. I'd so stock up on cool old games... *sigh*

Virtua Fighter: Evolution (PS2) - In gameplay terms, THE best fighting game ever. Not as sexy as Soul Calibur II, but the core game is deeper and the AI less cheap.

FFXI (PC) - A brave new world. Sucking my leisure time away like an industrial vacuum cleaner.

PES3 (PS2) - Perfect.

DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball (XBox)- might have been billed as a teen wank fantasy but more like a shot of morphine. Totally relaxing and pleasant, you'd almost think you were on holiday yourself. Extremely simple, but with more depth than you might think - and some bloody great graphics too.

BF1942 Desert Combat (PC) - a brilliant mod made with a lot of love. So good it almost dragged me away from vanilla bf.

Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis (GBA) - The game that got me hooked on the tactical rpg genre. Amazingly deep and varied.

Honourable mentions:

Soul Calibur II (XBox) - Beautiful to look at, great characters and loads of modes and options, not least the great Weapon Master mode. But some niggles and annoying AI keep it off the top spot.

Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire (GBA) - Maintains the addictive core gameplay and concepts of the series. No great advances beyond the graphics but still utterly absorbing.

NWN: Shadows of Undrentide (PC) - Started brilliantly but lurched into a dungeon hack.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (GBA) - Pretty, varied and non-linear. Suffers from the existence of Tactics Ogre, but a great game in its own right.

KOTOR (XBox) - Good fun, another game made with a lot of love, but slightly samey for my tastes.

Unreal Tournament 2003 (PC) - Perfect for those times when you just want a 15 minute blast.

BF1942: Road to Rome (PC) - Boring. Offered nothing that we didn't already have in vanilla BF, and you can't play one or the other without swapping disks. Stupid.

Unreal 2 (PC) - Totally samey.

05-01-2004, 14:37:30
After playing a bit more...

05-01-2004, 16:08:16
Eh? I can play Road for rome or BF1942 without swapping disks...

05-01-2004, 16:12:41
As can I.

05-01-2004, 16:16:57
really? oh ok. still not very exciting though is it. novelty (i.e. shit) vehicles and all.

05-01-2004, 16:23:35
No, it's not. Pretty damn bland if you ask me. And there's not a single map that I like.

05-01-2004, 16:35:11
What is PES3?

05-01-2004, 16:41:52
Pro Evolution Soccer 3. The best football game in the world.

Scabrous Birdseed
05-01-2004, 16:42:28
Own goal. It's a football game, should really be called PEF 3.

05-01-2004, 17:35:58
I agree that its not much more than the original game. The only thing in it I miss when on a BF server is the bayonet on the engineers rifle.
