I don't own any of the NME Top 50 albums of the year. That's the first time it's happened since I started buying it in 1986. Usually I have at least 10- one year I had 23.

Right. Where's my Val Doonican LP's?

Anyone got a list anywhere?

Funkodrom

I would have thought not having any of the NME top 50 would be a good thing...

NME has gone really shit over the last 5 or so years.

Coincidently, it got bought out by Warner/AOL about 5 or so years ago too.

Funkodrom
19-12-2003, 10:13:45
I didn't know that, explains a lot.

Funkodrom
19-12-2003, 10:51:59
And I wonder how many of the top 50 are signed to Warner/AOL affilliates.

I own three of the top ten, the rest are not on the website.

I own 6 of the top 10. My gf has one of the other ones.

Mike you can say what you like about the NME but i'll happily defend the quality of any of those 6 albums.

Could you link it? I couldn't find it.

I own five of the top ten and have Mp3s from all of them except Elbow.

Strangely enough, I don't own any of those... but none of them surprise me. Typical NME - total wank.

I suck...I only own one from the first (White Stripes) and that and "Welcome Interstate Managers" from the second.
Although I would probably buy Johnny Cash's album and possibly Jane's Addiction...and I haven't even heard of 2/3rds of the artists.
My Morning Jacket comes highly recommended, doesn't it?

Debaser
19-12-2003, 23:20:17
The My Morning Jacket album and The Mars Volta album are my two favourite albums on the list.

Eklektikos
19-12-2003, 23:20:35
I own none from either, which I find strangely satisfying :)

Out of those 50 I've only got the Distillers album and I didn't technically buy that...

Gramercy Riffs
19-12-2003, 23:21:23
Why the fuck are Blur on there, let alone number 2?!

*End Is Forever*
19-12-2003, 23:22:08
Because it's Q and they're just as bad as NME...

Debaser
19-12-2003, 23:29:20
That Blur album's really good. Out of time's my favourite Blur single for years.

Gramercy Riffs
19-12-2003, 23:33:37
Really?!

They did give me my highlight of the year, when that tosser fell of stage at Reading. Superb:lol:

Isn't that rather like saying Burundi is one of central Africa's richest nations...?

I 'have' 8 of the Q top 50. 2 of the NME top 10.

Beats me. The John Cale album got lauded everywhere, but only Uncut put it in their lists- I think it came in the top 5.

Funkodrom

I've got 5 of the Q albums of the year I think.

The Mars Volta and Dizzee rascall are my favourites.

Albums of the year, per publication.

White Stripes were album of the year in NME and Mojo.

Warren Zevon took it in Uncut.

Robert Wyatt got the nod by The Wire. Good choice by them- they also had "Salt Marie Celeste" by Nurse With Wound in their top 50.

I'm being told by my way hip local musician friends that British Sea Power is just to die for...true?

Funkodrom
30-12-2003, 01:16:48
Apparently they lost in a battle of the bands to a band featuring the bass player from my brothers new band Pete and the Pirates at the College Arms (the pub round the corner from my parents house).

Hmmm...
Top 5 Bands/Albums from the UK in the last year?

Funkodrom
30-12-2003, 10:59:18
That doesn't mean they aren't good though. I haven't heard much of them but I know quite a lot of people really like them.

I didn't buy 5 british albums this year I don't think...

Debaser

British Sea Power are very popular at the moment, though I can't say I know too much about them. I think KG's a fan.

Dizzee Rascal is really good but I don't know if it's BGH's kind of thing.

Really intense urban British hip hop. Made by an 18 year old kid.

If you like Dizzie Rascal, you'll probably like Roots Manuva.

He was the great hope for UK hip hop before Dizzie. He raps about pints of bitter and cheese on toast etc. Witness the Fitness is a great track.

Debaser
31-12-2003, 16:12:19
Roots Manuva is much better than Dizzee Rascal I reckon.

Scabrous Birdseed
31-12-2003, 16:45:38
But he's so dull. Dizzee is much more technically and musically inventive.
