I ran CaffeineMark 3.0 on my ThinkPad T40. http://www.benchmarkhq.ru/cm30/runtest.html

IE 6.0 w/ MS VM: 30922
Firebird 0.7 w/ JVM 1.4.2: 11075

Particularly stunning is the logic score: 504,279 on MS VM vs 18,675 on Sun's VM...

Yikes. I just ran that and got a 6350. Blackdown JRE 1.4.1 on Linux. Firebird 0.7.

I'll bet it's code bloat. Windows draws faster than X11. And IIRC, the MS JVM implements Java 1.1 only. Sun probably slowed Java down with all the 1.2+ bloat. Maybe it's my wimpy Celeron 900...

Microsoft really tweaked their VM for Java, when they decided they "liked" Java. That really ticked Sun off... that M$'s machine was WAY better. Also ticked Sun off that M$'s machine was more compliant (at the time they were actively supporting/developing it) then Sun's own VM. It was when M$ started bragging about how much better and faster their VM machine was over Sun's that the problems between Sun and Microsoft started.
