I ran Windows update. Now I'm sure this did my PC loads of good but alas it FUCKED UP THE WAY I WANT MY DESKTOP TO LOOK AAARGH AAARGH AAARGH!!!!

Apparently, TweakUI no longer controls the appearance of the little arrow thingie in the corner of shortcuts. I want them gone. Gone!

I guess I shouldn't make fun, since most all of us started out playing SMAC.

Try reinstalling Tweak first.

Your update may have just undid some of Tweak's stuff. If that's the case, then reinstalling Tweak may restore it to full functionality.

Or wait for a new copy of Tweak UI to come out - better yet, learn how to use the registry as the fast majority of it's "tweaks" come from altering keys in it. l know of a good guide to direct tweaking through the registry, don't have it saved but I'm fairly sure I can find it again. I'll have to try and dig it up for you if you can't wait for the next tweak version or don't do the below.

Try system restore, go to a recovery point before the updates. Some updates this will work on, others will overwrite and won't put the original file back for some reason or another. If that fails a repair from the CD (not ASR and not the first repair option, the second one, with the list of Operating Systems detected). Pick that one and you keep your registry, just the windows is restored to it's old form and it wipes the CD keys which say you have updates (as you no longer have them). May have to reinstall Tweak again, but it is easier than reinstalling.

They've now been replaced by little white boxes with some strange lines in.

own goal.

Nah, we're talking "vintage" Winnie 98 here mate. One careful owner, never reinstalled once in five years, it's that good. Tell you what, I'll throw in some near-leather seating as well. Do we have a deal?

 dude, that's awesome. ms has tweak 1.33 which is the last version they put out for non-xp powertoys.

otoh, it's always fun to mess with the registry. even better in the nt kernels with services you can mess with. :)
