A historic night last night for CM01/02.

Season 2005/6, 5 games to go and Woking have earned promotion from the conference and are still in the FA Trophy (OK, so what, but we won it last season as well).

This is the first time ever I have got a team promoted from the conference. Sniff, I'm getting all emotional.

Theoretically, it should be plain sailing from now on. Losts of promotion and playoff places.

Also, I am making a profit week after week.

Maybe I can even get some staff to join now...

Won't your first season in the league be a 'brave battle against relegation' ? :)

Well, I was leading. At about half way I am in fourth place. THere are three automatic places so I am hopeful for a top-3 finish and Div2 football next year.

That is when I think it will get tougher, but half the time I can beat Div2 teams in the cup competition.

An update here. First season in Div3, I finished as champion and was promoted to Div2.

Made very few changes to the side (just a couple of players) to strengthen the squad and a few youngsters on freebies. Was awarded 1.2 m for TV rights and only spent 200,000 (and that was at the end of the season).

After 14 games, I was alnguishing in 17th p[lace and wondering what I could do to survive. Then, a small tactical switch saw me sprinting up the table. Managed to get knocked out of all the cup comps which was a blessing.

Result : promotion gained with one game to go and finished as champion.

Div 1 football now and this looks a lot tougher.

I just don't know what to do with 4.5 m.

Oh, and the club is still making a profit, too.

Well done!!

You sure you haven't cheated!? :D

Honest.

No editor, no save/reload.

I am playing with fog of war off, though, which some of the purists at the CM forums consider as akin to a cheat.

You can turn it off?

I got Aberdeen to win the UEFA cup last week, it's so realistic ! ;)

Assuming that this is not a 100-0 attempt, yes.

Only when you set up the game, though. I think it is towards the top of the screen where you choose your club.

No, it’s not, I thought it was a set-in-stone feature. Not that I want to turn it off—crap scouts are part of the fun!

I need to get back into my season. I'm at that stage where I've won my first title and now I'm recklessly buying players to try and stay ahead of my competitors. Hmmm, that sounds familar....

Buying players is the most dangerous thing to do.

Get in more than one or two (and never two central defenders, btw) and your team goes to hell for the first half of the season.

The trouble is the game encourages you to do that because usally money leaks away and you feel the need to spend your spondoolicks before they are grabbed for unreasonable things like running costs.

Now, though, I have a healthy cash flow but I am concerned about my team's quality against 1st division opposition so I might have to spend.

Decisions, decisions.

I've gotten pretty good players for cheap. I got some Dutch midfielder for about 4 mil and he's been a stud. Denilson's coming on a free transfer in a month or two and I've got a 19 year old right midfielder to back up Beckham. Right now he's doing time on the reserves just to get some practice.

Only problem is playing time. I think I got 1 or 2 too many players.

Resource Consumer

4m! Cheap!

That's 500,000 less than my entire transfer budget.

Sean
22-02-2002, 16:34:37
You can sometimes pick Paauwe up for about 4m: was that who you meant?

If so, after he joined my Arsenal team he scored the winning goal in the World Cup, taking his value to 15m. Woo!

RC, congrats on the promotion. I’m downloading a data updat so Bolton start with Tofting, etc. :).

Sean,

Thanks. I hope you have a cable modem - that's an 18 MB update.

I actually slaved through it on 56k.:)

Sean

RC: you have more money than Bolton start with. And all the players love Rod Wallace .

Sean

And yes, a 128kbps one.

Venom

Sucks for you RC. My transfer record is 18 mil for Vincenzo Montella. Good goal scorer. Scored 22 last season and has about 15 so far and we're not even half way through.

I think the guys name is Tom Van Der Legte or something. Defensive midfielder with a crazy knack for scoring goals. He almost plays more than Roy Keane now. And he easily makes Nicky Butt a water boy so I'm looking to unload him.

Sean

Ah, van der Leegte. Shame the ‘hilariously’ named Rafael van der Vaart is nigh-on impossible to prise away from Ajax.

Just made one, minor change to the data update: Djorkaeff for Bolton! Woo!

Ah, so they get all antsy if you offload him.

I earned that money, I'll have you know. It was about 3 years before I actually paid any money for a player, most were frees and some of them are still with me now. My big problem was scoputs and staff - nobody wants to know you when you are on the bottom of the heap.

Venom, are you playing 4-4-2 or are you using diamond or anything.

Venom

I also snagged a couple of defenders as I sent Johnsen to Arsenal and Wes Brown makes me vomit.

I am tempted to include him in my cyki team. I saw him play at PSG many times.

Fair enough, if you stay in the Premiership you get 12m TV money anyway.

Reid (Millwall) is excellent if you’re playing in Scotland, I’ve discovered.

Venom

Regular old 4-4-2 RC. If the real Man United manager would remember to stick with this formation he wouldn't be having so many damn problems.

Sean
22-02-2002, 16:47:06
4-5-1, pressing, man-marking, direct. It’s a classic.

Venom
22-02-2002, 16:49:38
Man marking and direct for me as well. I tend to give up some goals playing that way but I've got the firepower to outscore just about anyone. Save Barcelona. I got them in my Champions League Group, beat everyone but them and then managed to run into them in the Semis. Why the hell is Patrick Kluivert so damn good in 99/00?

ANyone from Millwall is excelent by definition.:)

BTW, CYKI has Djorkieff at 5.4m. I suppose that is fair but I was hoping that he would be a little cheaper. I'll have to put that plan on hold as I can't get that for Viera these days.

I haven't got the latest version but I worked really hard with Reading in CM3 to play passing style. Had to pick totally different players up but it was a lot more interesting, if harder. Especially in Div 2.

I find that the computer doesn't suss your tactics quite so readily if you play mixed passing.

I play a customised 4-4-2 diamond. Here the key ballwinner is my DMC. What I have done, though, is to set both ML and MR to "run with ball" (both are pacy and have good dribbling skills). The variant on that is to play my MR as the AMC (he can cover that as well) and set the AMC to run with ball and the MR not to. I also make long shot adjustments and run with ball adjustments depending on the strikers that I have.

To date this has worked very well. I think the key is that when the computer appears to have sussed your tactics you don't throw the baby out with the bathwater and change to 3-5-2 or something. Instead just make small changes.

I find, though, that playing against 3-5-2 this line up gets overwhelmed in the middle. No problem, set to direct and lob the ball into the corners for those pacy wingers.

When I first started playing this game, I stuck with the defaults. Only now am I beginning to understand what makes certain players tick. The compare players function is an absolute godsend as it takes into account all features. Before, for example, I was just hiring strikers with the best finishing ability and ignoring everything else.

Funkodrom

Not heard of the compare player function... perhaps the updates are worth having. :D

Scouts are pretty crap in CM3. I've got 00/01 but haven't played it. couldn't get it to run on my old PC and haven't had time to try it on my new one. Shakey's playing it a lot at the moment.

You have scouts? Last game, someone poached mine and nobody would come and work with me. I played 3 seasons without a scout and then gave up.

Waste of money, couldn't work out how to sack them though.
