I realise that there are a few formalities to go, such as nominations, voting and 12 months for other artists to release albums, but it's already pretty much decided. It's "Come get some" by Willis. Let me run off some superlatives-

It's the best debut album I've heard in at least 8 years.
It's the best album I've heard from a female singer-songwriter since PJ Harvey's "Dry" back in 1991.
It's the best British soul album I've ever heard. Admittedly, that's no great achievement....

Seriously, it's brilliant. The songs vary from churning rock to skeletal R'n'B, taking in psychedelic folk and alt-country en route, but it's all pinned down by Willis's voice- the best female soul voice I've heard. She makes Kelis sound like Posh Spice. It also steers clear of the overproduction that kills most soul records- in fact the arrangements are really quite sparse. It's not going to date.

Check out the single for a sample- "Take you high".

Wouldn't that involve the rather novel idea of giving the award to an artist that deserves it...?

Are you saying M People didn't deserve their Mercury award?

Are you sure it's not "Bruce" Willis? Kazaa is offering me his stirring rendition of "Under The Boardwalk".
